Aug 19 - 20 2006 This is a trip well worth waiting for. Wanting to parasail was one of the prime reasons to even make this trip. We had to wait 1 month to get camping reservations into Emerald Bay State Park. As I said earlier, well worth it! One of the best places to camp. We could peek into Lake Tahoe from our site :-) We could not leave until 7.30 am on Sat, Aug 19th. With a late breakfast in Folsom, our first stop was Angora Lakes. The road opens up only in summer. As a result, there was a huge crowd. Finding a parking lot seemed difficult. A short .5 mile hike took us to the upper lake. There was a resort there adding to the crowd. Everyone seemed to rent a kayak ... read more

My friend, Deepa, had come over from NC and we had planned "ladies day out". My husband was more than happy to let go of our car(and me, of course) for 2 days. I am meeting her after 2003, I guess. She shifted companies & a little while later, I got married and came to US. She joined me later in the US, but in the east coast. Thursday, July 27th, I drove over to show her the Pacific Ocean. She was actually stunned most of the times. Only then, I realized the importance of seeing places as a newbie. I don't remember, but I think I was dumbstruck by the Pacific(the first time I saw her) & I could trade anything for a drive along CA's Big Sur coast(till date). I had seen pictures of ... read more

30th June 2006 - 4th July 2006 The only planning I did for this trip was reserving a campsite. (We could not camp during memorial weekend as we had not reserved a site earlier—so, lesson well learnt). Everything else was vague. Very Vague! I hear people say all the time “ Just take the car, have a map and set out…That kind of trip is generally more eventful as you don’t know what to expect”. So, we were going to do that and see for ourselves. We had no events planned earlier at all. In fact, I did not know there was anything to do. Just a couple of days to leave and Judy from RoadtripAmerica (RTA) gives me this list of places to see….!!! So many, you won’t believe. How was I going to fit ... read more

18th June 2006 This is my first such hike- a hike with Swami Sukhabodhananda, the author of the best seller “Oh, Mind Relax please”. Well! He is a Hindu monk from India who has written a number of books for the benefit of people like me :-) This was a part of the completion of his first set of events in bay area. June 16th and 17th was spent very usefully with his Bhagavad-Gita talks in Sunnyvale. We were more than 10 in number. At that time, I did not know it would be such a long day there. I was informed 2-3 hrs. 10.45 am: We started off from the parking lot of Sanborn Park in Saratoga. We planned to take the Peterson trail, move on to San Andreas trail for a bit and turn ... read more

We’d wanted to do Sacramento as a part of a camping trip to Folsom Lake. But all campgrounds seemed full during the memorial weekend. Instead of sitting at home, Sacramento is definitely a better option  So, we started from home around 7 am. We were there by 9 am. We first hit Old Sac (that’s slang for Old Sacramento). On the way to the garage, a cop stopped us to say that no cars were allowed in for 2 days as there was a Jazz festival going on. In any case, downtowns are best seen on foot. So, we parked the car just opposite to CA State Railroad Museum. We headed right there. Entrance fee $8.00. I definitely felt it a little pricey for the place (it looked small from outside). So, we dropped ... read more

6th May 2006 - 14th May 2006 Trip to Hawaii! Mmm.. At the first thought, I didn’t really want to go there. I am basically from south India where we have lots of beaches, some good ones too.. The weather is not that hot(other than peak summer). So, um, what’s the big deal? Then, my husband bribed me with thoughts of volcanoes, hike down a colorful crater, colorful fishes. What the heck! No trip can be non-enjoyable. So, we decided & then planned.  I mean, we had no doubts which island to visit. Fortunately, we think alike(mostly) and we knew instantly it’s going to be the two southern most islands, Big Island & Maui. Hawaii First we booked the flight- ATA airlines(2 months in advance though!). Cheapest available, I am sure. We were going to ... read more

1st April - 2nd Aril 2006 This trip was as instantaneous as it could get. We decided it on Friday eve 6:00 pm and we left on Saturday morning. :-) And probably it was our first camping trip on a normal weekend. Morro Bay is along the Central California coast. Some 200 miles from bay, the area involves 2 -3 hours of drive. We wanted to reach early. So we took the less scenic hwy 101 down to Morro Bay. We knew instantly, it had to be Morro bay as we saw the larger than life Morro Rock. After finding our way to Morro Bay State Park, we found a campsite under the Eucalyptus trees. The park itself is one of a kind. I could see the bay from our tent. Just a 2-3 minute walk. ... read more

Road trips are always fun. But I’ve always wanted to do this trip in a long time. Winter time. Can’t go north. So, south it is! It’s been a while since we’d been there. So, I will have to refresh my memory here and there. We had covered Los Angeles a month back during thanksgiving. So, we were going to cover other places than L.A. There are a bunch of beautiful National Parks in that area. Deserts! Here we come. Thu, 22 Dec 2005 We were going to leave very early next morning (3:00 am). As usual, we got butterflies in our stomach. We were so excited. I don’t think we slept until 10.30 pm or so. Fri, 23-24 Dec 2005 I got up first at 1:30 am. Just could not sleep anymore. We loaded most ... read more

July 30th 2005 - August 8th 2005 2005 has been a hectic year. Lots of activities! I was going for a 3 month break to India, a week after we return from this trip. Ganesh’s office had a forced shut down for 10 days and this was our later 5 days of vacation. We wanted to see WA & Glacier National Park. We initially thought of driving it all the way around. But some knowledgeable people from RTA told me “Impossible”. Duly noted. Next question: fly to where? We checked Portland and Seattle. Seattle would not have made it a round trip. Lots of criss-crossing. So, it had to be Portland. Ganesh had already been to Portland. I was not too keen and told him, “Let’s not do it…” But then, as always, he wanted to ... read more
