We woke up this morning around 6:30, got ready, ate breakfast, and walked to the train station. The boys had their backpacking backpacks.. Looking like the real deal! We got to the station about 20 minutes before the train left, bought our tickets and boarded the train. It was a four hour train ride to Krakow.. We slept most of the way but talked a little bit. Tomek told me that it really shouldnt take 4 hours to get to Krakow, but the tracks are in such bad condition in Poland that it slows the journey. He said that this is because the railway is a government run as opposed to privately run. Tomek asked me if I had ever been on a "poo poo train." I thought he was joking or something because he tends ... read more

So I am sure most of you know that for the past two summers I've worked in the Outer Banks, NC at the beach.. A lot of Eastern and Central Europeans go there for work during the touristy season to make money, go to the States, and travel.. So I met a lot of Russians and Polish kids which has been a lot of fun! We take turns having parties, they cook polish/russian food for us, they make us drink their vodka, etc.. So now I am lucky to have friends in Poland and Russia! So, Tomek picked me up at the bus station in Wroclaw at 2:00am (I felt bad). At first I didn't recognize him because I hadn't seen him in two years.. he had dread locks then, but now they are pretty long! ... read more

On day three we all woke up really early so we could get the most of our day since our bus left at 5:00pm. We ate breakfast, put our backpacks in the storage room in the hostel, checked out, and left for the fresh air market. It was a really cool sight... stands everywhere from cheap scarfs, to fresh meats and vegetables, to spices and fake name brand stuff. And best of all.. they gave free samples! I was good and didn't buy much- just a few food items and a scarf. Then we went to the Hapsburg Palace. It is HUGE! First we all laid in the grass in the Palace garden. We were so tired from the past two days- all the walking and traveling.. I think we were a pretty funny sight, just ... read more

We woke up very early today, around 8:30, got ready pretty fast, and went downstairs for our complimentary breakfast. It wasn't great, but hey this is a hostel not the holiday inn.. The first thing we did was go to the Belvedere Palace because it was far away from everything else. This palace belonged to a Hapsburg general. It was so beautiful.. the architecture, the gardens, the marble floors- I can't believe it was for a general! It was turned into an art museum... We spent about two hours looking at three floors of art. There were some old religious icons from the 1400's, there was a room full of sculptures of facial expressions during certain situations (e.g.: being hanged, smelling a bad odor), there were some impressionist paintings- even a few of Monet's, and a ... read more

I woke up at 6am, took a shower, packed really quick, and we were off to Vienna. We took the tram to the metro, and the metro to the bus station. All of us fell asleep right away and it was a decent bus ride besides our unfortunate seating next to the "bathroom." Our bus left Prague around 8 and the seven of us arrived in Vienna at about 12:30. The first thing we did was make our way to our hostel to get rid of the heavy backpacks! I hate to say it, but the hostel was nicer than our dorm in Prague! It was seven of us in an eight person room... hmmm who could our mystery roommate be? When we opened the door, all the beds were empty besides one, where the mystery ... read more

So, today was the last day of Czech Intensive class... We took our test yesterday, so we were all wondering WHY we were required to go to class today. Well, I am glad I did. Or I may have missed out! We all shlepped our way to class at 9am.. but our professor was late. He finally showed up around 930am (at this point we were all wishing we were in the US because of the 15 minute rule!). He walked in with a smile- and his what..his guitar?? He unzipped the case and told us to turn to the last page in our Czech language booklets, where there are pictures of foaming beer and czech verses about pivo.. Yes, we all did learn at least one word during czech intensive..pivo..BEER. He ran through the ... read more

Last week, posters were spread around Prague about a free concert in Old Town Square.. Goran Bregović's brass orchestra were scheduled to play at 7:30, and by 5:30, the square was already filled up! Of course, we showed up right when it started, so we had to connect hands and push our way through the lively crowd. We could hear the festivities all the way from the Charles Bridge! The music was traditional Slavic with a contemporary gypsy twist! The crowd was dancing and everyone was speaking different languages.. Girls were up on their boyfriends' shoulders with their arms in the air.. It was quite a site! I took a couple video clips to capture it which are posted to this blog. Most of the music was upbeat with thumping bass drums and hopping melodies, but ... read more

They weren't lying, Czech intensive is pretty intense! Our intensive class started last monday.. it is a five our class starting at 9 and lasting until 2. We have it for two weeks (ten classes). But we have reached the half way point! We have about 15 kids in each class and we get like two twenty minute breaks... I actually think its a great way to get us into the class routine.. Every morning, we wake up at 7, get ready, eat breakfast, and leave the kolej (that's czech for dorm!) around 8:40, walk to our tram stop which is 200meters away, get off at Malastranska, and walk across the bridge to our class building. We have one more week of this, and then next week, on monday, real classes start! This is funny because ... read more

Today after Czech intensive, we were feeling pretty good because it was friday, so instead of taking naps, we went to a wine festival. It was not what I was expecting at all! We got off the tram and walked into the tented area. There many stands, not just wine stands, but food, crafts, toys, jewelry,etc.. I went there expecting just to taste some wines, but I ended up buying some candy from a candy stand, buying a Czech dessert (it was a batter wrapped around a pole seasoned with sugar and cinamon over an open flame until cooked, then they took it of the pole and gave it to you), eating a potatoe pancake, buying a blue leather bracelet from a craftsman, and almost buying some cheese (but, I didn't because I couldn't read the ... read more
