We start our rapid trip back to Melbourne. We head inland from Geraldton and make our way to check out the Super Pit at Kalgoorlie via an overnight stop at Cunderin. From Kalgoorlie it's an overnight stop at Norseman then we begin our trek across the Nullarbor, which is anything but boring, parts are void of trees but masses of bushes and birds. Our trip is split up with overnight stops at Eucla then Ceduna, where the Quarantine officers took all our vegies and fruit, much to the joy of the kids. We stop at the head of the Bight for some of the most spectacular views we've seen on this whole trip, not to forget all the whales just a stones throw from the cliffs. From Ceduna we happily drive though Port Augusta and stay ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri August 20th 2013

It's our final Indian Ocean stop before we head inland on our trip home. Kalbarri is yet another great WA coastal spot with all you need, or should I say I need, surf, fishing, a river and not to mention a pub that over looks the water. Thumbs up.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Carnarvon August 8th 2013

We head to Coral Bay for a 3 nights. Plenty of snorkeling and most importantly as Andi informs me, I can have a shower. We then spent a couple of days in Carnarvon, staying with a friend Juan, right on the wharf. Juan goes out of his way to make us feel at home, cooking up a seafood feast that left me motionless for a good hour. Carnarvon has a colourful history that was discussed well into the evenings around the dinning table. Juan took us all out on his boat for some up close whale watching with Reuben also spotting a Dugong. Thanks Juan, we had a ball.... read more

After speaking to some people along the way, we decided to take their advice and stay in Cape Range National Park. No power, phone, or showers. We were camped literally right on the waters edge, and once had to move due to the full moon high tide. The attraction at Cape Range is Ningaloo Reef, which offers reef snorkling in pristine waters just of the shore. We saw fish, whales, dolphins, coral and sting rays. We all loved it.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Karratha July 26th 2013

Into the Pilbara, we head to Karratha to catch up with Big Rob and check out Dampier and surrounds. The dirt really is red and gets in everywhere. Rob working Fly in / Fly out at a Liquid Nitrogen Plant. Heaps of mining and gas related industry where ever you look. Every house has what seems at least 2 boats parked in the drive, plenty of cash around. We visit the Red Dog statue and take a trip to the Woodside Gas Plant visitors centre, which I found fantastic.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » 80 Mile Beach July 26th 2013

We stay at 80 Mile Beach for 2 nights, a shell collector and beach fisherman's paradise (I'm officially not a beach fisherman yet!). Matilda collects a bucket full of shells and Reuben goes about setting a record for the most hamburgers consumed at the campground hamburger night. Can't believe how much the kids are eating!... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Broome July 19th 2013

We arrive in Broome, via Halls creek and Fitzroy Crossing. We check into the caravan park (across the road from Cable Beach), and I soon realize that every 2nd shirt on the cloths line is an XL pink polo, the grey nomads are here!. Broome is chock a block full of nomads, backpackers and families as its the WA school holidays, the place has a great vibe. We cram plenty in with a visit to a Pearl Farm, Camel Ride, view dinosaur footprints at low tide, go whale watching and toast a few sunsets and of-coarse some markets. We all go to the oldest operating open-air cinema one evening to watch not only the movie but also get our hair styled by Qanats jets screamingly metres above us on approach to the airport. I say to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kununurra July 4th 2013

After leaving Katherine, we head to the WA border with an off road overnight camp at Big Horse Creek NT. Till and I do a bit of croc spotting while looking for a fishing spot. Temperature hits 37 so its time to re-hydrate :) before Reuben gets to use his now 5 prong marsh-mellow holder at the camp fire. Border crossing into WA reveals we are chilli, garlic and onion smuggles and have our stash confiscated. We blame Reuben and Matilda, they are held in special lock up. (see pic)... read more
