Thursday! We drove for hours and hours through hot boring desert. Sorry, it’s true. Anyway, we have now arrived at our oasis - the Chateau Marmont. Wow! It’s even better than I imagined. We have garden cottage 82. It is old and cute and has a lounge room with study nook, a bedroom with WIR and the biggest room safe we’ve ever seen, a bathroom and a kitchen/dining room. It is so cute. The kitchen has original old appliances and cupboards. The back door, from the kitchen takes you straight to the pool and the front door is accessed from a little garden with fountain and outdoor setting. When we arrived in our room, there was jazz music playing and a tray set up ready to mix a drink. So we did just that. I used ... read more

The rest of Tuesday and beyond: We lazed by the pool for hours and didn’t do a great deal for the rest of the day. Then after dark we headed to the Venetian Casino complex. We had a bite to eat, I found some Coach sunglasses in the amazing lobby area and we had a flutter. We wandered along the strip stopping at casinos here and there and eventually made our way back to the Paris one, which is just near our hotel. On Wednesday, Matt made me get up early again! It’s meant to be a holiday! Anyway after breakfast we headed to the Las Vegas Speedway or race track and Matt had a great time driving an Aston Martin and a Lamborghini around the race track. He got to meet some fellow iRacing ... read more

What day is it? Since we last wrote we had a busy day of travelling, a flight from Washington DC to LAX, and then collection of a car that reminds me of the Dukes of Hazard car - you know the ugly orange one with the black stripes! Then we set off on the lengthy drive to Las Vegas. I was a pretty tired by the time we got in - due to the time differences from the West to East coasts and the travel. So we had a quiet first night in Vegas & a nice swim in the pool. Yesterday (Monday 16th) we headed off on a walk after breakfast. We visited most major casinos/sights on the MGM end of the strip. Although our hotel is one block back from the strip, it is ... read more

On Friday we caught the Amtrak express train from New York to Washington DC. The train was a very comfortable way to travel and the guy announcing information on the train was hilarious. He was probably over 60 years old, but he spoke like a 20 year old American DJ. As was New York, Washington DC is very different than we expected. On Friday we checked into our very comfortable Hotel and then set off on a walk to see the sights. We visited the White House which is just on the next block and saw it from the front and back. We got to see the first veggie patch too. We visited the main monuments - Matthew made me walk 1000 miles again! We thought we would try Southern food although there was nothing wrong ... read more

We went to visit the Frick Collection. Henry Frick was a very wealthy industrialist who built a beautiful home on Fifth Avenue in 1913 & 1914. He only lived until 1919, but over his life he gathered an amazing art & furniture collection. I can’t recommend enough visiting this house when you are next in NYC. http://www.frick.org/collection/index.htm We had lunch in a diner nearby! It was actually really nice. We also went to the garment /textile area and went to Mood Fabrics. My friend Sonia told me about this place - OMG! Even Matt (who avoids places like Spotlight & Lincraft like the plague) was blown away. Hidden up on the 3rd floor of an old building with old fashioned elevators that have an elevator operator! The selection and sheer volume of any type of ... read more

Hi there! Another busy day in NYC! We’ve only got one more day here - that’s a little sad : ( We started the day by catching the subway to Time Square and picking up tickets to see the matinee session of West Side Story. We took Greg’s advice and went to the ticket booth in Time Square and yep, 2 tickets for the price of 1 - sweet. Not bad seats either - Row D on the mezzanine. We jumped back on the subway & headed to the pier and to catch the Staten ferry over to Staten Island and back (we saw the statue of liberty), then we had a stroll around Battery Park. We headed back to Time Square (probably our least favourite place so far) and had lunch at Bubba Gumps Shrimp ... read more

Today we decided to go our own way! Just kidding. I went to Macy’s and shopped for 4 hours. So many clothes and shoes and accessories. I wish they had a store like that at home. I sent Matt an SMS during the day: Macy’s shoe dept = overwhelming Later I went to one of the 12 manicure & pedicure places along 2nd Ave near the apt and got all spruced up. After dinner we walked to the Rockefeller Centre and looked out over New York from the top. We could see camera flashes coming from the Empire State Building - very funny - because I’m sure that’s what they could see from the Rockefeller Centre rooftop too! The views were fabulous. We hopped on the subway and went to the Brooklyn Bridge, we walked ... read more

Today we had a look around Grand Central Station - amazing building. Very grand! We had brunch there too in one of the hundreds of places to eat. We did our usual trick of going to the place that was packed with New Yorkers on their lunch break and were not disappointed. Next stop express train 4 to Yankee Stadium. Wow! What an amazing day. Matt & I have never watched a baseball game (other than what we had seen watching that Major League movie from the 80’s!). Yankee Stadium is a slick well oiled machine. Our seats were magnificent, in the shade all day. We watched the whole 9 innings and even though the Yankees lost 2-1 to the Red Sox, it went down to the last ball. There were a few home runs & ... read more

Sunday night we went to Terminal 5 - an amazing venue across town. It was 3 stories inside and everyone had a great view of the stage. There was a rooftop garden too. It was a fantastic venue. I wish there were places like it at home. There were heaps of bars and staff, so no line ups, the bathrooms had staff in them and although it cost you a $1 tip to use them, it was worth every cent. Clean amenities, your choice of aftershave and sweets, someone to hand you a clean towel etc. (We discussed on the way home that we know why the bathroom staff were so happy - if the 3000 people use the bathroom even just twice each over 3-4 hours, at a $1 a time, those 3 staff probably ... read more

We headed out on another adventure. The subway 7 day pass we purchased on Saturday was well worth it - the subway system is so easy and clean and air conditioned. Anyway, today we went to Harlem in the morning, we stumbled across a big street market and celebration. Very multicultural and diverse. We spotted a Costco and I had seen one advertised on TV once - well it was massive, even the trolleys were massive. Crazyiness. Next we caught the subway back downtown and I went to Century 21 (a department store of discounted designer fashions) and freaked out at actually flicking through racks of Vivienne Westwood and Calvin Klein, YSl etc all squashed together like a Myer stocktake sale. While I was at C21 Matt went for a walk around the WTC site, city ... read more
