DAY FOUR The old part of Atocha Station is a neat classical, Victorian style building, huge with a glassed roof, full of tropical plants and misters. We had plenty of time to look round before our train to Toledo this morning. Toledo was a fascinating city. We spent our time wandering around the old town, entering through the main gate in the wall. We went to the Alcazar first, the old fort / palace, a neat building but the museum inside was mainly military with little on the history of the building and what it had been used for. Next was the Taller del Moro where we could look round three rooms of a 14th century Mudejar palace (Mudejar refers to architecture etc. built by Moorish craftsmen under Christian rule). There was some excellent carvings in ... read more

DAY ONE Late. Everything. All morning. The taxi was late picking us up. The bus was late leaving Southampton for the airport. The plane was late leaving Heathrow for Madrid. We couldn't find the hostel we were after either once we got into the centre of the old city. What a good start to the week. Still, we did find a place to stay, double room with en suite for €36 per night, what seems to be the going rate at the moment around here. Despite the early start, we headed out again straight away, walking not far to the Plaza Mayor. This is a large square surrounded by all buildings from the 17-18th century. We found ourselves coming back time and time again during our stay. There is a covered walkway all around the edge ... read more

Going to Nicosia was a long day. We all went as far as Larnica, where we had a look around the paleontology museum. It was small, but ok, and we were lucky to get in as it was about to be closed for a clean-up following flooding a few days ago. We couldnt get into the municipal museum, in the same building, as that had already been closed. Mum and Jo stayed behind in Larnica while Dad, Colin and I went another 1/2 hour or so along to the divided capital of Nicosia. We parked just outside the odl city walls, had a quick lunch, then set off for our afternoons exploring. We walked along the top of the walls to the Liberty Monument, a memorial to Cyprus's struggle against colonial rule, EOKA fighters raining the ... read more

The first few days

We (Mum, Dad, Colin, my sister Jo and I) left Stanstead early on a typical charter flight. We were all squished in for the 4 ½ hour flight to Paphos, watching the movie in silence as we didn’t pay the extra for the headphones. England was wet and chilly when we left, but Cyprus was a lovely warm, sunny 26C. We picked up the hire car (a Citroen Berlingo - underpowered, ugly, but fitted us all in with our bags) and headed off for the villa. The villa is just outside a village called Argaka, north of Paphos. It had three bedrooms, a good size living area, and a pool - great for summer but the water is a bit chilly now! After settling in and unpacking the food we got earlier, we wandered down to ... read more

Less ruins and more mountains

We took a well maintained secondary road over the hills at the base of the Akamas peninsular. The road wound almost straight up, across a small plateau then straight off the other side, with some good views all the way. We stopped in a village called Agios Georgios where there is a 6th century basilica and other ruins with some more mosaics. The site was smaller than we’ve seen already, but the foundations had been reconstructed better and it was easier to see what was what. From there we went up to the Avagas Gorge. We walked along a gravel track for about 1km before actually entering the gorge. It was pretty spectacular, the sides narrowed right in and it was damp and dark at the bottom. We walked a fair way up before stopping for ... read more

We travelled back in time like Marty McFly, leaving Auckland at 5pm on Monday and arriving on Easter Island at 10am the same day. Of course, we werent going back in time to save the world or anything. We were hit by the heat and humidity as soon as we got off the plane. A change from NZ, but probably nothing like the changes in weather we'll experience in the coming year. First stop was the YHA to put up our tent, then the necessary trip into town to get some money to pay for everything. Only the could we start looking for what we had come to see. Only we didnt see any Moai for a bit. We went past Ana Kai Tangata, a cavern at the foot of some cliffs with some old and ... read more
