I had an absolutely amazing time in Queenstown, partying by night and chilling by day. I had some great friends by this point and it was so good to dance the nights away with them and explore the beautiful town during the day. Queenstown really is stunning - it's surrounded by mountains and has a huge lake which seems to have tides and waves. The Maori have a lovely story about it containing the heart of a girl who fell in love but it all went wrong, and the waves are her beating heart. I have to admit I wasn't entirely listening to the story at this point as I was too distracted by the scenery so I'm afraid that's all I can remember of that story! Queenstown is known as the party capital of NZ ... read more

I left Rotorua and moved on to Taupo on Friday 11th November, after a very messy night out in Rotorua. I did manage to catch 11am and got the bus to have a 2 minute silence for Armistice Day, and we were probably the first people in the world to have a silence. Taupo is in the centre of the North Island and Lake Taupo is the biggest lake in New Zealand. The lake is surrounded by mountains (one of which was used as Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films) and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. However, as I was disgustingly hungover, I spent the day attempting to wander around town before giving up and spending the afternoon asleep. The hangover then turned into a full-blown run-down cold, cough and general lergy, and ... read more

I spent just over a week in Melbourne at the end of October and absolutely loved it. It has a much more European style than any of the other cities I've seen in Australia and I felt very at home there; with the river and the weather it felt very much like London. I spent the week with a friend who I'd met up the East Coast who is living in Melbourne and working. Unfortunately she lost her job due to the recession about 6 weeks ago, but it meant she was free to show me round! Melbourne is one of those cities where you need to know a local to really get a feel for the place, as lots of the bars are hidden in little back streets, so it was fab having her to ... read more

On Wednesday I arrived in Alice Springs on a very nice Quantas flight with quite a few seats to myself. I arrived at my hostel at about 2pm and went for a walk around town. It was a very hot 38 degrees, but without the humidity of Northern Queensland it felt nowhere near as hot and sticky. Alice Springs is the largest town in Central Australia, but that does not make it a big town! It does have a couple of supermarkets and quite a few shops, but you can walk round it in about 20 minutes. There are a lot more Aboriginal people here than any other place I've been to; Cairns had a fair few but Alice is the town that all the Aboriginal communities in the reasonably local vicinity come to buy the ... read more

Sorry it's been so long since I updated; the only downside of having an amazing time is trying to find the time to tell people about it! Two weeks ago I went sailing around the Whitsundays, which are a group of 74 islands dotted around the North Queensland coast. Our boat held 22 people plus the crew and so was one of the smaller ones that sails the Whitsundays. We spent the first morning getting to know each other as we sailed out to the islands and I had a great group of people on my boat. It's always the people that make these trips and I was very lucky with my Whitsundays trip. We got to the Blue Pearl Bay and jumped off the boat and snorkled around. The colours were absolutely incredible, and the ... read more

I spent two weeks in Agnes Water and had some of the most chilled, funniest and generally best days of my life. I worked for two hours every morning and then had the rest of the day to surf, kayak in the sea, lie in the sun and hang out with my new friends. Last Monday I went on a scenic flight to a desert island near Agnes Water where we were left overnight to fend for ourselves. The flight itself was one of the best things I have ever done; it was a tiny 3-man plane and the pilot, aptly named Bruce, was absolutely crazy! I arrived at the airfield and he took one look at me and said, 'I'm going to enjoy the inflight movie today', which thoroughly confused me until we got into ... read more

On Sunday 9th September we left Brisbane to move up the coast to Rainbow Beach. There were lots of people out in Brisbane with signs wanting the truth about 9/11, as I'm sure there were in lots of other cities across the world. It really showed me that although Australia is a long way from home and a long way from New York, the Western World is a pretty small place and similar things affect people in the same way all over. As we moved up the coast we started to see more and more of the typical Queensland homes I was expecting to see - raised off the ground and surrounded by palm trees. The houses are raised up partly to prevent damage from flooding of the nearby rivers, and partly as a natural air-con. ... read more

On Tuesday I headed out of Sydney with Oz Experience - a bus company that I'm doing all my travelling with here in Australia. We set off pretty early and there were lots of lovely people on the bus. We travelled up the Pacific Highway, stopping in various tiny towns along the way. My first overnight stop was at a surf camp just up the coast from Coffs Harbour (a small town known for growing bananas). The surf camp was a pretty cool place, full of surfer dudes from all over the world who are working there, and heaps of backpackers getting in a surf lesson. I went kayaking that afternoon and then chilled out with a few beers around a camp fire in the evening. The atmosphere was great, and we played lots of different ... read more

On Tuesday I went on an overnight trip to the Blue Mountains, which are about 2 hours west of Sydney. They're given their name due to the eucalyptus trees that cover the mountains (that are actually canyons) and these let off a vapour that makes the air look blue. As we left Sydney at 8am, the weather had decided it was against us and thick grey clouds were gathering overhead. It didn't take long for it to start raining, and the visibility was so bad we didn't think we'd be able to see the trees, let alone the mountains we'd got up early to see. Nevertheless we drove on, and first stopped at Glenbrook, one of the first towns in the Blue Mountains. A lot of the area is covered in grass and so is perfect ... read more

I've now been in Sydney a month and have really settled in to the Aussie way of life. I've found Sydney itself quite American in some ways; the wide streets in blocks, the big houses and cars and the general pace of life seems more like an American city than most British cities that I know. Sydney harbour really is the most beautiful harbour I've ever seen (and I like to think I'm an expert in this area...). Even on a cloudy day, going over the bridge into the city puts a huge smile on my face, and it is simply stunning when it's sunny. The days when I've been down to Circular Quay (where many of the ferries go in and out) have been lovely Winter days and there's been a fantastic atmosphere about the ... read more
