Oh what a day! We left before the sun came up headed for the beautiful town of Fredericksburg, TX. The oil rigs were lit up like Christmas trees and the air smells of oil. It was something that would take getting used to for sure. Our hotel in Pecos, was very nice considering what the rest of the town looked like. We actually braved the mexican joint in town and found it to be the best Mexican food I have ever had! It was yummy! So...back to my story....we made a quick stop in Fredericksburg after about a 4 hour drive and then headed for the LBJ Ranch. This was the ranch of President Lyndon Johnson and was also known as the Texas Whitehouse since he spent about a quarter of his presidency at this house. ... read more

From Grammy's point of view. What a day, we slept in and enjoyed a causal drive to the Carlsbad Caverns. It was HOT, (102 degrees), but the Cavern was 46 degrees, we actually wore jackets. We all went except Papa, he has a difficult time navigating in the dark. It was a great time and Grammy walked the whole way!! (a mile and a half) I thought I did good, till a couple with young kids on their backs passed by me, going uphill. The cavern was beautiful, we all enjoyed the stalagmites and the stalagtites, ( we also learned the meaning of these cave creatures) After the tour we did the one thing all tourist do, hit the gift shop. How can you ever leave a National Monument without getting a souvenior or two? We ... read more

What a great day today! We had been looking forward to visiting Lincoln New Mexico. This is where Billy the Kid escaped from Pat Garrett and shot several people. It was a great piece of history and Mason did a project on New Mexico in school and this was something he was looking forward to seeing. Imagine our surprise when we showed up to find out it was Lincoln County Days going on. We were able to see a parade, sample some local cuisine (it was SOOOOOO good) and really get a feel for the people of this area. It was a something we had been looking forward to and this just made it better. Once we were done seeing what we needed to see, we left and went to Fort Stanton. This was a fort ... read more

From Megan's point of view: We woke up today with the sun shining and hardly any clouds in the sky. We didn't go to to the brewery and decided to just get out of town and to Fort Union New Mexico. A few miles from Fort Union, we started to see lightning and heard thunder. We pulled off the freeway and started heading toward the fort and the storm. When we arrived, you could see the forts and the storm heading towards us. As we got inside, the ranger told us to take caution if we are going out, and go at your own risk. We decided to try to go through the fort and make it before the storm came in. About halfway there, the thunder and lightning was right by the fort. My papa ... read more

Started out early this morning, but couldn't figure out why my parents were not showing up for breakfast. Apparently, they were locked in their room! The rooms lock broke and they couldnt get out! After that fiasco, we were back on the road. Our next stop was Estes Park, Colorado. This is a beautiful, but very busy and touristy town outside of the Rocky Mountain National Park. We made a quick stop at the visitor center and headed for the Fall River entrance. We were told by the ranger that we could find nice picnicking just up the road. We were able to get a spot and have a nice lunch and then back on the road through the park we went. It was absolutely beautiful! The mountains and the glaciers were stunning. The pictures do ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful morning and the first thing we did was to head out to the salt flats for one last look before we headed east. Those salt flats are beautiful in the morning! Megan wanted to take a drive on the open flats and test her skills...she did a GREAT job! Our next stop was Rawlins, Wyoming Frontier Prisoner Museum. This was a prison that opened in 1901 and closed in 1981. The original buildings were still there along with the gallows and gas chamber! Of course I wanted to sit in the gas chamber.....pretty weird feeling....We ended up in Laramie, Wyoming. What a cowboy town! Well off to another destination tomorrow.... read more

We had a short drive today. I laid by the pool the entire time. I was in hog heaven. While I was at the pool, Theo and the kids went out to the Salt Flats. They had a fantastice time and said it was the highlight of the trip so far. We will definately be back to Wendover!... read more

Well, we made it at last. What a great ride it was. I have never seen so much wildlife as I did this time. We saw, wild horses, burros, coyotes and a ground hog. I have been this way so many times and never seen a thing. It was great to see so many animals, especially since it was so hot out. We came upon an older couple in a semi truck (more like a semi RV)from Iowa that had just hit a baby calf. After checking on them and making sure they were alright, we continued on. The calf was just fine as well. We had a nice dinner and are now relaxing while the kids swim. We have a short drive tomorrow to Wendover, Nevada. I plan to lay by the pool all day ... read more

Another summer is in full swing and once again we are preparing for another road trip. 21 days of pure bliss! This is a trip that we had planned two years ago, but decided to scratch it due to the heat. Well this year we decided to take the bull by the horns and go for it…drought conditions, wildfires, flooding and all! This year the route will take us to 14 states, 4 National Parks, 12 National Historic Sites, 1 Brewery, 3 Museums, 1 Tabasco Plant, 2 Plantations, 1 Alligator Farm, 1 Kings Mansion and a whole lot of National Forests (including the Ozarks). The house sitter is waiting in the wings and I am filling out “Do Not Forget” lists like crazy…ahhh…let the packing begin!... read more

We were up at 5am this morning to catch our 8am ferry. We had a 40 minute drive to the ferry terminal and we had to arrive 30 minutes early to assure we make the ferry. I sure will miss Vancouver Island. We all decided that it was much better up north and next time that is where we will stay. Victoria is beautiful, but quite the tourist trap. The ferry was on time and we made it to the Tswassen terminal in 90 minutes. Although this ferry was much cleaner and newer, the scenery was not as grand as our ride from Anacortes. The drive from Tswassen to Sicamous was VERY busy! There are numerous lakes and we came to find out that the legal drinking age here is 18. We couldn’t figure out why ... read more
