I have never been one to go to a country to just tick it off the list but for the first time I did it. I had no real interest in coming here but since I was around the area I thought what happens if somewhere down the track I have one country left to see and I have to travel all the way from Australia to see it. I was in Germany Trier, which is an ideal place to stay overnight and do a half day trip in both places. Trier and the small European country Luxemburg. Trier was briefly the capital of the Western Roman Empire and was the most important Roman city north of the Alps. Because of this location it provides a chance to see Roman ruins in a different light and ... read more

The business cards have gone

The business cards had disappeared from the windshields, no more on the footpaths. No guys in tracksuits would sprint in front of me to throw escort and erotic massage cards on the ground. Warsaw had changed, that stuff was now online but 7 years later my feelings towards the place didn’t. Still at least there are more things to see now. In 2004 I was so bored here I decided to pick up the business cards and make my own walking tour. That was because there was nothing else to do and I had already paid for my accommodation. 7 years on and I found myself in the same situation - 4 days booked since I left Minsk earlier and a bargain train for for Dusseldorf that I didn’t want to give up. Back in the ... read more

“Rochelle! Rochelle!” a friend of mine told me to say in the streets of Minsk. Unsure as to whether I had found my ‘Rochelle or her daughter’ I thought maybe she had reached Minsk? I arrived at the airport and immediately was forced to pay for medical insurance by the government. The official piece of paper was put in an envelope, which had a map of Belarus. On this map I saw a place called Pinsk. Those that have followed my Milan to Minsk journey will recall that this part of my trip is dedicated to Seinfield and their fictional movie called Rochelle Rochelle, with a twist. ‘A young backpackers strange and ‘hopeful’ erotic journey from Milan to Minsk.’ Now, on the show when that movie gets turned into a Broadway musical, a line for the ... read more

So I’m in this nightclub ‘BoozeTime’ in the Moldovan capital Chisinau. I see this girl on the dance floor but wasn’t sure if I should go up and dance with her so I didn’t. Later on I see her sitting by herself for the past 15 minutes and I’m thinking ‘You know what. A good looking girl like that should not be sitting by herself’ so I went over and had a chat with her. We start chatting and she speaks really good English. She’s a uni student from Chisinau but just got back home after a year in America studying. So we get along pretty good, a few jokes here and a few jokes there and we are both laughing. She’s at a table, which I’m now sitting at and we’ve talked for about 15 ... read more

No matter how good their English is don’t whatever you do ask a Romanian for directions. It was 9pm and the taxi driver explained that this is Unirii Square our agreed stop off so I could save 5euros instead of my hostel. A large square built during the dictator Ceausescu days that’s not far from my accommodation. The street I need to ask for is only one street away from the square. I see a church, which was a landmark, but in Romania churches are really not a landmark as there are so many. I ask a restaurant and they point a different direction to the taxi driver… Both are not the right way. I walk around back streets and main streets and end up at the same spot as before near a subway exit. There ... read more

At times I feel Unwelcome

It isn’t the Bulgarians but the tourists that come here that made me feel unwanted. Arriving on the 2nd week of August, the summer crowds along the Black Sea was at its peak. An eclectic mix of race coming from all over Europe but it was the tourists from the Russian area that continued my stories of them verbally assaulting me. My first night out at Sunny Beach I was told to “F**k off foreigner! Don’t look at me.” I wasn’t looking at him, in fact I was looking the other way and standing outside a shop with others. So I replied back “Than why are you speaking English?” The next day as I was casually walking along the shore of the beach when some tough guy with two of his friends didn’t like my tan, ... read more

I was back again to the island my dad was born for the 5th time but 4th time since the journeys have begun. Visiting a Greek island of your heritage means (especially when travelling there with your dad) you have to listen to the same stories for the umpteenth time about the family history, village life and if you show no interest than an attempt to make you feel guilty that you don’t care is made. So in desperation to get a break from all this I built up enough courage to drive around the island myself. The first time I was here was 1995 and even my last visit in 2009 tourism was not an overload. But with the Greek financial problem set in. Island hoping for the Greek population has become popular. Kythera still ... read more

I have never been to such a superficial place as Ios in my travels. Some places you go yeah fair enough but this is like if you are a solo traveller no one really wants you to tag along. When I first started talking to people they’d ask “Are you on your own? Shit good luck! You really need to be part of a group to enjoy this place.” At this point I didn’t say I had just turned 30, 5 days earlier. I have mentioned on the first blog entry for JP 5 that I am actually 24. This is based on my theory that you are only as old as how many birthdays you’ve had in your native country. But since I am half Greek a birthday in Athens should see me gain a ... read more

I was a real little shit the first time I travelled - Not interested in anything, not even a glimpse at one of the worlds most iconic landscapes could change my initial thoughts of overseas travel. My true hatred, my belief was that travel sucked. So when on my first morning I was served up a Greek style Continental breakfast I officially gave up. That was until half a day later I drove around the volcanic remains of the Greek Island Santorini. 16 years on and I returned to look back with fondness of the ungrateful 14 year old little shit that was I. There is a build up of appreciation of what that 1 month with my mum and dad gave me. Within ½ a day I realised that there was life outside of Australia ... read more

I am in Athens at the port trying to get back into town but the metro is not working. I walk 500m down the road to catch a bus - I can’t buy a ticket. I catch the bus anyway to get to a tram, which will go around the world but nevertheless I will not be waiting with the thousands of tourists trying to catch the only bus to the centre from the port. The next day I need to get to the airport from Monistiraki. I couldn’t buy a ticket on the tram and the Metro was no different. I could only pay the 8 euro fare with coins. All machines couldn’t accept notes and there was no one stationed at the ticket booths. Why am I telling you this? Well just a few ... read more
