Hi Drew We lived in Seattle for 7 years and loved it. One of the few places that felt like home. Good people and good energy. A good place for old hippy...ish people like us. As you say it does not rain as much as advertised. That is a marketing ploy to keep the Californians from moving north. If you are ever there in July go to Sequim for the lavender festival. It is best to go the weekend before the festival. Happy travels.
hipster capital of the usa by far san fransisco, check it out. also there's good beer in every us state. microbreweries are everywhere, it just took you that long to find out about them! it is very interesting to read your blog about your travels through the usa, considering how you've been almost EVERYWHERE. i think you are still traveling the states with too much of a preconceived notion, i can't say that i blame you though. all of those years with aussie media drilling negative stereotypes about the usa into your head is probably hard to undo.
Thanks for the comment Mike I knew about the microbreweries for a while but there is only so much you can type about before boring people. I enjoyed Oregon beers when I had them in the east and heard people saying Oregon is the best so I figured microbreweries topic fitted well here.
It's a bit hard yes to get away from the pre-conceived but that is very much still a part of the states as much as the unknown parts which I hope I have covered. I don't think my USA travels is the typical USA backpacker trip. I have been complimentary throughout my travels in regards to most Americans. I'm a fan don't worry Mike. Thanks for reading.
This blog made me realize how little I am interested in the backpacker scene. Hanging out in hostels and pubs with other backpackers isn't necessarily my idea of a good travel experience. I'm surprised you even bothered to talk to this German chick. What she did was something very German: she tried to teach you a lesson, Germans just love to do that, even if they're not a teacher, you're not their student, and both of you are not inside a classroom. I don't think I would have been able to keep my cool as well as you did in that situation. Too bad Central America seems to be overrun by that type of idiotic tourist, but luckily one can usually avoid them by going to places that are not hyped by LP, which is still quite easy, even in smaller countries such as Nicaragua.
Thanks Jens for you support Yeah their is a whole undiscovered area in Honduras and Nic's but that needs a bit of mental strength to get through. At this point of the trip I wasn't prepared for it. Too close to Africa.
Amazing! Leaping stingrays, hugging groupers - it is incredible how Juni is able to commune so totally with nature. It would be wonderful to experience a spiritual snorkelling journey, and I hope to do so before Juni stops weaving his magic. Thanks for enlightening me on this fascinating snorkelling option.
Blame it on the Bodhis... [i]I've been to every city in Mexico. I came across an unclaimed piece of meat in Baja, turned out to be Rosie. I guessed he picked a knife fight with somebody better. Found one of your passports to Sumatra, I missed you by about a week at Fiji. But, I knew you wouldn't miss the fifty year storm, Bodhi. [i/]
Great blog, and yeah you are right. Too many Bodhis in CR for me brah.
Blogging can be difficult work and so can extended travel - they require discipline and perseverance. I really admire your endurance on both of these counts. As for "settling down", am not sure a wanderer or free spirit ever really settles, as it is more like an extended pause between excursions.
Travel guide for Ouidah The history of slavery and the historical background of Benin are very interesting and multi-faceted. The colorful and vibrant culture catches you in an instant.
If you need a reliabel, relaxed and Englishspeaking guide in Ouidah I recommend you Keneth Agboton.
His Email is:
agbotonkeneth@yahoo.fr
and his Cel.(always more reliabel in Benin):

He knows Ouidah and Benin very well, the known and the hidden places.
So enjoy Benin with all of his friendly magic,
Stefan
We just drove by Graceland it was too tacky and expensive. However, your blog brought back a great memory. Linda and I attended a Johnny Cash concert in Boblingen, Germany in the early 1980's. Following intermission his concert was crashed by Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. They had a great jam session for the rest of the evening. The only one missing was Elvis, but he had passed away although there were rumors that he was there...probably just in spirit.
Absolutely hilarious blog. My wife keeps asking me when we're going to visit New Orleans, now I've read your blog I think I'll have to take a visit to see the "best mammary glands ever!" lol
Glad you enjoyed Virginia Tech My daughter graduated from VT in 2010, so we have been there many times during her years at VT. It's a great school! I also appreciate your kind words about real Americans. Are you going to make it out West? The closest you got was South Dakota, which is nice, but there is so much more!
We agree that to understand America you have to go to the smaller towns. The US is nothing like NYC & LA for the most part. I'm glad you are enjoying the college towns. Enjoyed the photos of Shenandoah National Park. Hope you'll let us know when you get near San Francisco.
Possibly san fran Hey, Im in seattle at the moment. Do you have a mobile number. I am looking like I might be staying in san fran for 1 night before my bus maybe two just depends on the next week and what i cover. The country is too nice to just not keep moving with the urge to see more.
