Our first task upon arriving was to sort out the skydiving! we had arranged a provisional booking with one particular company .. but the hostel allowed us to make a concrete booking with another company through them and it was even cheaper .. result!! Surprisingly neither Silke or I were in the slightest bit nervous the night before ... we just tried to resist the temptation to get too drunk on Caipirinhas at the hostel bar! Even in the morning, when we were on our way to the airport, it hadn't quite sunk in that we were about to jump out of a plane 10,000 feet in the air!!! The plane was tiny .. and in order to get our takehome DVDs they needed to send 2 cameramen up on it with us ... which ... read more

We caught our final overnight bus up to Rio and it was a lot nicer than the previous one thank god! With just under 2 weeks left till heading home we thought we would spend a few days chilling out on Ihla Grande .. I had heard a lot of cool things about it from various people in Argentina who had travelled down through Brasil and it seemed like a good place to relax on beaches and do some jungle trekking. So we arrived in Rio bus station in the early hours of the morning, and after asking at about 5 ticket booths, we finally found the company that would take us 3 hours west to the town of Angra dos Reis. As far as we knew the hour and a half ferry ride over ... read more

Iguassu Falls Well, we weren't so lucky with the weather for our visit to the Brazilian side. Like fools we hoped for the best and headed out in just our T-Shirts, and got absolutely soaked through! Luckily seeing the Brazilian side doesn't require anywhere near as much time as the Argentinian side ... you get more of an overview, whereas on the Arg side you get to go in, around and even under a lot more. We got a great view of Garganta del Diablo from the Brazilian side though ... you can see the shape of the falls .. and the smaller cascades that make it up. That night we headed back to the Argentinian side to grab our bags ... before heading back over the border to Brazil (i know!!!) to catch the ... read more

The question! We took another overnight bus from Rosario ... and we both managed to send ourselves to sleep scratching our brains out over a Sudoku puzzle .. and I was trying to ignore the slightly crazy Argentinian who was sat next to me :-) Still, he wasn't ranting about the Falklands at least ... We got into Puerto Iguassu early afternoon .. hoping we would be able to visit the falls, but upon arriving we found out we couldn't do that until the morning. So instead, we settled in with some beers by the pool :-) It must have been a combination of the sun, the beer and the romance because I asked Silke to marry me and she said yes ;-) I probably wouldn't be writing about it on here if she'd said ... read more

Rosario We got a night bus directly from Montevideo .. and the only real event was realising halfway through the journey that we were due to arrive at 4am ... we'd counted on arriving much later, and had to call the hostel when we arrived to see if a) they were open and b) if they had space. We ended up crashing out for what was left of the night in seperate girls and boys dorm rooms, before being able to check in to our room later on that day! The main reason for going to Rosario in the first place was to skydive! So on the first day, we booked the trip and then relaxed in and around the hostel .. finishing off the day with full stomachs after going to an all (the ... read more

Buenos Aires Silke finally arrived!!!! :-D We spent in total another 4 days in Buenos Aires ... this time rather than staying in downtown we decided to go out to the Tango district of San Telmo. We went to see a Tango show together ... which included an hours lesson ... it went much much better than it did the last time I did a lesson .. not sure whether that was to do with the instructor, or the very sexy lady that I was dancing with ;-) We went to Recoleta Cemetery, and once again lined up to see Evita's grave! And, after 5 weeks in Argentina, I had my first run in with an overly patriotic taxi driver, who seemed to enjoy holding me personally responsible for Britain's role in the Falklands conflict. ... read more

El Calafate I arrived in El Calafate after a pretty gruelling 30 odd hour bus ride, which went from Bariloche .. across to Comodoro Rivadavia on the Atlantic coast, down to Rio Gallegos (almost at the southernmost border with Chile) and then back up to Calafate. Managed to check into the hostel I wanted which was lucky! On my first day there I went for a wander around a small nature reserve on the edge of town (Lago Nimez or something like that). At the point where the reserve met the lake shoreline I ducked under the fence and spent a good few hours walking along that. Very windy, it really blew the cobwebs away :-) The town of El Calafate itself is quite small, with only around 5,000 inhabitants. It's really geared towards the ... read more

Bariloche So I finally managed to get myself away from Mendoza, after around 5 days there of partying and relaxing! I found out just before leaving that Silke had bought a ticket and would be in Buenos Aires on the 25th (woohoooooooooo!!!!!!) so I had around 10 days to see what I wanted to in Patagonia. First stop was San Carlos de Barilcohe, a ski-resorty kind of town on the edge of a deep blue lake. The weather unfortunately wasn't too kind to me on the first day, but on the second day I was able to take an excursion out to Nahuel Huapi National Park. There were a few mini-hikes en route, including one to the top of an impressive waterfall that provided good views out over the park. The highlight though was El ... read more

Buenos Aires South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires By theKirton April 3rd 2007 Matt Kirton The day before leaving from Salta we found out about the storms in Buenos Aires, and that the cloudy weather would last at least until the weekend (another 4/5 days away). So, the weather wasn't too great for exploring the city at first. Still, I was able to pack quite a lot into the 8 days that I spent there including drinking .. drinking and, er .. drinking. :-) In between all that I went to see Boca Juniors play, had a Tango lesson and saw an amazing Tango show ... wandered around in Recoleta Cemetery, went to the cinema and saw a lo... read more

The long road to Salta We were picked up in the morning for the 10 hour drive over the Argentinian border towards Salta. For an extra $20 the drivers promised to take us on a scenic route that would take in puna, salt flats and rainforest! The puna, or plain was stunning ... the brightest of green grasses with the moutains in the distance, turning to salt flats near the fringe of the plain. Going up into the moutains was fun, but coming down from 4000 feet was a bit of a trauma .. with the brakes going completely on the outside of a hairpin bend .. the driver was pumping them to get some purchase but nothing was happening! Very scary stuff! Still, the brakes recovered after a short break .. but the rest ... read more
