Hi folks,
I'm from Dundee in Scotland and have recently finished working in China - teaching English. Absolutely loved the job to bits. The kids were so cute and always put a smile on my face when they come running into the school.
I lived in China for an entire year, and I managed to see quite a lot of the country while I was there.
I will be moving to Indonesia in the very near future, and I definitely plan on travelling around the world's largest archipelago as much as I can - so I will be continuing to blog my adventures and hope you all enjoy reading about them :)
I’d been back in bonnie Scotland for a little over three months. I spent the first couple of weeks catching up with friends, family and the like, as well as enjoying some home comfort food that I hadn’t had for over a year. Kebab, haggis, chippie in particular! Then I decided to take this whole teaching thing a little more seriously, so I spent the next month of being home in Edinburgh completing the CELTA course. After the first couple of days, I could see why CELTA is far and away the market leader in the EFL world. I learnt more on that course, in terms of how to effectively give a lesson, than I did in a whole year in China. The course cost a total of a grand, but it really was money well

I will start by saying this year has been the best year of my life by far. I’ve got to meet some amazing people, travelled throughout this beautiful country and ate just the most delicious food. But having said that, I would also say that this year has been far from plain sailing. It has been an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. I still remember how difficult the first couple of months were. This was my first time leaving the UK, and as soon as I set foot over here I was just so overwhelmed. I was ridiculously home

So my plan was to meet some friends in Nanjing; spend a couple of days there, and then go to the mountains in Huangshan. The only problem was that around 700 million Chinese people were said to be travelling around the country at the same time, thus all the hotels and hostels I looked at in both Nanjing and Huangshan were fully booked. Luckily the girl I was travelling with just happened to be a couch surfer. And she was able to find us somewhere to stay in both cities. I was a little apprehensive at first just because I had never stayed on a strangers couch before, but I suppose life can become boring if you

The bullet train can reach a top speed of almost 400km an hour. And moreover the Chinese government is working on a new bullet train that can top 500km an hour. My boss, who is very much anti-government over here, told me that the main reason they are working on this isn’t actually for faster journeys; but to show off to the rest of the world. They are saying ‘look what we can do’. Like I said, Wuxi is extremely close to where I am now, but it has taken me a year to actually visit the city. The reason for this is just what

But luckily enough one of my classes got cancelled and it meant I had three days off work in a row. And to make the trip even better, two of my pals who are travelling around china were in Beijing at the same time. So I got to meet up with them. I took the fast train to Beijing and because I bought my ticket last minute, I had to pay for a first class ticket as there were no second class ones left. It was almost double the price but it was either that ticket or no Beijing. And to be fair, I felt

The hostel was full of foreign travelers, which isn’t something that can be said for a lot of the hostels I have stayed at in China. Most are full of Chinese travelers. So it was a nice wee change to meet some native speakers. I arrived quite late on the Sunday so I just crabbed something to eat and relaxed in the lounge. I ended up chatting to a German girl, an English girl, and a Dutch guy. The two girls happened to be English teachers as well so it was nice to have a wee bitch about all the foolish things the Chinese

My train rolled into the train station about 11 o’clock at night and my plan was to grab a taxi and head to the hostel. A feat much easier said than done. The queue for a taxi was like nothing I had ever seen before. It was probably about 50 meters long, but worse than that was just how slowly it was moving. I waited for a good twenty minutes and it had only moved a few feet, so I thought I would go catch an illegal taxi; with the mindset of ‘what’s the worst that could happen.’ I found a woman who was trying to get a customer for her man’s taxi. She quoted me 60 RMB for the journey,

This month it’s Suzhou, next month Hangzhou, then Nanjing, and finally Beijing. Suzhou is only 40 minutes on the train from where I am now, and I believe it’s regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the whole of china. I had heard a number of different quotes describing the natural beauty of the city. My favorite goes something like this, ‘above there is heaven, below there is Hangzhou and Suzhou.’ So you can see why I was so eager to visit this city. I stayed at a hostel named ‘The Waterfront’. The last couple of hostels I stayed at were proper phenomenal, with modern restaurants

I had heard before I left China that the touristy things to do in the city were quite limited and they could all pretty much be done within two days. And although this might be true to an extent, it really doesn’t matter in the slightest. Just being in the city is an experience in itself. I arrived in the city on the Monday morning and after checking into the hostel, I was eager to get started with my plans. I have to say though; the Reggae Mansion is easily the best hostel I have ever stayed at and everyone in my room kept saying it. It’s huge, the beds are so cozy, and

Before I left Changzhou I made this ridiculously long plan of all the things I was going to do, and it would have taken at least a week to do all the things on the list. But hey, it’s better to be overly prepared than under prepared. I even had directions to all the places I was planning on going to just so I didn’t get lost. I would have hated it if I had gotten on the wrong subway and ended up trapped in some wee village. I stayed in the Phoenix hostel and it is really is a great place for expats to stay at. The dorm rooms are a decent
