Hey Friends. Unfortunately, this entry about my placement at the National Elephant Institute in Lampang, Thailand was lost during the recent travelblog server crash...the text is gone and most of the pictures do not show up. When I reach Bangkok in a few days I'll hit up a good internet connection to repost pictures and retype the blog...as well as a new one for the last two weeks I've been in Indonesia. Thanks for your patience...and see most of you back in Canada in 2 weeks! Today is officially our last Global Vets day - we are just finishing up our [View Full Entry]

Serious Play Two planes, a few taxis and a ferry ride later, we arrived from Cambodia tired and eager to relax on a quiet beach on the island of Koh Phagnan off the eastern coast of Thailand. Since we had two days to kill before our second Global Vets placement began on the neighbouring island of Koh Samui, we decided to attend the famous full moon beach party hosted every month on the island. Although Mike and Jess told me to take it easy in the sun, it was really cloudy - so I spent about 8 straight hours lying [View Full Entry]

I should have taken a shot of my foot on one of these steps to show the scale...the stairs were only 4 inches deep...going up was the easy part.
Thankfully, Cambodia provides a little (very little) bit of relief compared to Vietnam in terms of the constantly soaked clothing...we're in a cute little guesthouse on stilts over a lake, filled with backpackers, huge comfortable wicker chairs with colourful cushions, and a wonderful evening breeze. We spent 2.5 days in Siem Reap, a total tourist town, visiting the temples of Angkor and the Land Mines Museum, as we do not start our second Global Vets project in Thailand until the July 2nd. Now that we're in Phnom Penh, the capital, it feels more like we're in Cambodia and not the Cambodian [View Full Entry]

...and I haven't stopped sweating since my last post. May I share with you my essentials for this leg of the journey: baby wipes, pepto bismol, and my camera. Aside: I've added a few pictures to my last entry. I should start from where I last left off...and highlight what wasn't written about in our official Global Vets 2007 Travel Blog... Buffalo Expedition Part One : Three days visiting farmers in villages/communes 60km from Hanoi. Let me say now that there is no way a 'regular tourist' could have done what we are doing...special permits, security officials, official documen [View Full Entry]

Even with my sleep mask on, somehow I knew when the Cathay Pacific noodle cart (what other airline brings you noodles for a snack??) was coming by...
There's so much that I want to share and it's been less than 24 hours. Pictures speak much louder than words, and I hope to post as many as I can to go with this entry when I get a chance. After four different planes and 36 hours of continuous travel, Jess and I have arrived in Hanoi and it is surreal. I didn't feel like I was really in a different country until we were in the backseat of the taxi last night on the way from the airport to the hotel in the rain - we almost ran [View Full Entry]

Tried to fit Schmarley in my pack but he's not down with small dark spaces next to bug spray and malaria medication...
I am traveling as part of the Global Vets 2007 program at the Ontario Veterinary College, volunteering with veterinarians in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia with two of my classmates, Michael Mossop and Jessica Wu. Our projects include working water buffalo research, feral dog/cat sterilization and vaccination programs, Asian elephant care/conservation and Avian flu awareness programs and vaccination trials. Yes, we're sure we want to go there during their hottest and most humid season, and work with chickens that may have Avian flu. What is life without a little risk? We've been preparing [View Full Entry]
