This is just a blog to say thankyou to my birthday (and general) wellwishers. It feels really nice to get little messages from people, and just knowing that someone out there is thinking about you, no matter how far away you might be. The support from everyone has been really overwhelming. Love to you all. Peace.... read more

Fire Festival!!!.....preparation.

"What did you do on your birthday Nikky?" "......" "Nikky?" "Manual labour." After a 2 hour nap (directly under the air conditioning machine) I woke up, got dressed, and was picked up (in searing hot 35 degree weather) to go to Shigaraki and make a torch. On the 26th, there is a fire festival. People trek up a small mountain, carrying large torches on their shoulders, and take them to the fire shrine. You can, of course buy the torches, but by venturing out on a hot day like Sunday, you could save yourself $20. In hindsight, I should have paid someone $50 to make mine for me.....no, not really. It was hard work, but I got into it, and it helped me avoid actually being hungover. I have my suspicions that I was still ... read more

Osaka Birthday!

Birthday celebrations in Osaka! I felt that an Osaka Birthday for my 24th sounded kind of special. Off I went on a Saturday afternoon, with no clear plan in mind, and only knowing that a friend from Kyoto was going to meet up with me somewhere, at some time, and his friend was coming too. I wasn't dressed in my finest, but I wasn't too shabby, dressed in humble jeans, black top and a headscarf. This would not have made me feel out of place in Kyoto, but hanging around Umeda station in Osaka, or walking to the HEP building (not a hepatitis building but an Entertainment Plaza, I believe) , everywhere I looked there were glamorous people. Men women, you name it, ALL FASHIONABLE. Japanese people are so COOL, they need a new word for ... read more

5 hours of Japanese and a Sore Bum

What has the world come to when playing Janken (Rock, Paper, Scissors) with a 5th grader is the highlight of your day? Thoughts from earlier: I came to a lesson observation today, thinking it would be an informal affair, watch a lesson, have a chat, go to school, plan lessons....but it was not so. Instead, I am now seated in a room with 50 other people, all of whom (myself included) are wearing identical brown guests' slippers. 95% of these people are native Japanese speakers. Around 12pm M. sensei and I left our school for a place called Tsuchiyama, and we stopped off in Shigaraki (home of the creepy raccoon-dog sculptures and their namesakes the real, and slightly less creepy raccoon dogs themselves) and had some ramen (insert desired word here...unique? partial? only served in?) to ... read more

A glance at my Junk Mail Inbox is enough to convince me that ESL teachers everywhere are slacking off! With suggestions to “Grow Bigger in her Eye!”, advice for “Male Enhance”, information on “Blue pilules” that supposedly have an “excelent improving effect” and “good potence” and advice about “8 thmgs evry woman makes in her intimate life” clogging the web waves, I'm surprised that any of us manage to find a job! What hope for us is there when the prevalence of “Engrish” in our lives (my life) is overwhelming?! Email, billboards, fashion, TV, movie subtitles…I mean, there's going to be a day when people just give up and decide that using their own language is better than butchering someone else’s…..or those who speak the butchered language will get sick of reading t-shirts that say ‘have ... read more

Shiga Shennanigans (sp?)

In which Nikky has her official welcome party, discovers the delights of 'daiko saabisu', goes for a midnight amble, does some origami and some sunrise shrining - and misses the sunrise altogether. Well I don't really need to blog about it anymore now do I? I've told you what happened....Ok here we go... Suffice it to say I had an interesting and fun evening at my Welcome Party My school organized a welcome party for me. I asked for them to put it off for a short while (funds were rather low a while back) and so they combined my party with a farewell party for the 3 student teachers who had been working here. I think they changed times on me, because thinking I was late, I was in fact the first to arrive, and ... read more

Bent like a rice stalk in the wind...

I read somewhere that the perfect Japanese bow is one where you emulate a ‘rice stalk, bending in the wind’ I took a detour on the way home the other day, and managed to get a few pictures of my surroundings. You will see rice fields - plenty of those in the area - and also some of the hazards associated with driving in Japan. I am talking about the one way- oops I meant 2 way streets, the impromptu train crossings you have to remember exist, and the ‘this is a sharp corner so we’ll just put a mirror up shall we?’ safety measures. As much as I grumble it is fun to drive here. The maximum speed in my area is 50km per hour, people nod and let you go first, or do a ... read more

This visit to Biwa-ko (Lake Biwa) was an unplanned one, but it was great to see. I went to visit Kenji at his store not long ago. He’s the older gentleman I buy my furniture from…and for a little bit of flirting (and a lot of ‘Of course I love you Kenji’ s) I buy it with a discount….the ‘I love you price’. It’s all open and above board……I’m not about to get bamboozled into marriage or anything sordid like that. ^_^ Anyways, I ended up hanging around in his store, chatting and browsing, and practicing my Japanese for about 3 hours and he invited me to go eat sushi with him nearby, so I accepted. I met up with him around 8 (I won’t tell him where I live - preferring to carry my furniture ... read more

An amazing facet of traditional Japanese culture. I have moved the full account of the tea ceremony from Golden Week 1 and have tweaked it a bit. There are also new photos for your perusing pleasure. I still feel that I was privileged to attend, and aside from the numb legs and ensuing pins and needles (from kneeling for a prolonged period of time) it was a fabulous experience. *** Saturday Tea for 20? I went to a tea ceremony on the Saturday afternoon which marked the beginning of Golden Week. and then was invited to have dinner with my helper's family at her house that night, so I didn't go to Kyoto until Sunday morning. The tea ceremony was lovely. I was invited as F-san's husband was co-ordinator of the event. (Lucky!) It took place ... read more

New hobbies

Technically they're old hobbies, but since it's been a while and i'm in a new country we can call them new hobbies for now. In Australia I played soccer, I danced (latin) and I went out for the occasional karaoke night…..and to be honest, until I started doing it again here, I didn’t realize how much I missed them. I started feeling the dancing itch a while ago, and was so so pleased to find a dance class here, and the soccer training and karaoke are just happy accidents. DANCING I have seen 10 year old Japanese girls that could give 25 year old Hip Hop dancers in Perth a run for their money….so I signed up for a class. It feels so good to get my body moving again, though it tends to be rather ... read more
