Travel Blog Posts
After some relatively rough seas and a whale sighting, we sadly departed our floating home and transferred our huge amount of gear (read the list of dressing requirements for Team Awesome from our previous blog, our first one for the Australia trip) to a rental car so that we could drive out to the Atherton Tablelands. On our way into the countryside, we stopped at Granite Gorge Nature Park, where we hand fed wild rock wallabies (small kangaroo-type animals) including ones with joeys in their pouches. It must be a genetic thing – I just wanted to pinch their little kangaroo cheeks. The wallabies weren’t wary of us at all. They come up on their hind legs and put their little paw in your palm to balance while they eat the food. I had more attempts ... read more
PLEASE NOTE: At this point we've given up on pictures and picture captions. We had 34 pictures selected for each blog post but internet was shocking in Australia and in Bali it's better, but not by enough to upload photos :-(. We'll do a final post later if the pics are of interest... We left JFK Airport on a Saturday evening and arrived in Cairns (pronounced Cans for some unknown reason-evidently the Sydney Airport has a cave troll related to the Philadelphia Airport’s as she rudely informed us ‘we were in Australia now’) at noon on Monday after transiting through LA and Sydney. The longest flight we had was 14 hours, and both of us thought it went quickly. We each watched a ton of movies and followed the advice of every Qantas staff member we ... read more
Driving to Florida, 2009 to 2010 For Christmas break, we drove from NJ to FL. We started the trip from Rumson on December 27, and stopped in DC to see Sahtiya. Our healthy brunch at a café was followed by a stop at the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl, where the hot smokes (a large, spicy hot dog) topped with chili justified the long line out the door. When we got back to Sahtiya’s place, we met her brother, nephew and some other family members while we munched on our yummy present of peppermint bark and candied pecans. Mmmm, Sahtiya, we love everything you make. Out of DC, we hit a ton of traffic and didn’t get into Naz’s in Greensboro, NC until about 11pm. The gracious hostess that she is, Naz made us feel right at ... read more
The Month of Muir Trail - Part 5 This is the last part. For the missing section from Bishop to Kearsarge, see the blog about our trip with the Alicia. We did that section backwards in July due to a fire before we re-started in Yosemite at the beginning of August. Day 16 - Shuttle to Independence and Hike to Gilbert Lake Ring in the box and hidden in her pack, Cindy was ready to go the next morning. She went to the post office to bounce a box to the hotel we were staying at in Lone Pine at the end of the trip. At the library while Cindy went to the post office, Andrew met Jim, the hiker from PA that we met at the top of Donahue Pass. Jim had finished the trail ... read more
The Month of Muir Trail - Part 4 This section is from Vermillion Valley Resort to Bishop Pass. Day 9 - Marie Lake to Muir Trail Ranch The next day, Erin, Andrew and Cindy met up with English Nick to climb the short way up Selden Pass from the lake. The view down on the lake was as great as the scenery from the lakeshore. It seemed that each lake was more beautiful than the last; in reality, they were all breathtaking and we were enjoying them in near solitude. We had a group lunch with about six or eight other JMTers near one of the lakes, and laughed when we heard Nick squeal as he jumped in for his swim from behind some trees at the other end of the lake. We then tramped through ... read more
The Month of Muir Trail - Part 3 This is the section of the Muir Trail from Tuolumne through Vermillion Valley Resort - the first week of our re-start. Day 1 - Tuolumne Meadows Our last blog ended at exactly the same time this one started. After Andrew's parents left us at Yosemite Lodge to catch the hiker shuttle in a few hours, we took care of some business. For Cindy, that meant making frequent trips to the bathroom because of her upset stomach as well as calling her advisor for grad school and trying to get grad school loans straightened out. We ate breakfast and got on Diane’s bus to take us up to Tuolumne Meadows to restart the hike. She talked about flora and fauna while we watched all but the last 15 minutes ... read more
Andrew's mini-Family Reunion This blog picks up after we hiked our first section of the Muir Trail, which was in the middle of the trail. The next day, Andrew and Cindy made their resupply boxes for the Muir Trail. This was more complicated than anticipated because we had to identify and fit every single thing we needed for a week into the boxes (food, contact lens solution, med kit supplies, toilet paper, etc.). While sitting in a coffee shop inventorying our goods with bellies full of yummy Country Breakfast, we were listening to the SAR (Search and Rescue) report on the radio. It went on forever with a list of tragic backcountry stories - this person was evacuated with a broken arm, a deceased hiker was helicoptered out after a fall, and finally a guy’s foot ... read more
California We have decided to end our discrimination against our travels in this beautiful nation, so we are posting about our hike of the John Muir Trail as well as some other trips we’ve done in the states. We’ve traveled so many fun places in our country, and still have a lot left that we’d like to see! Hike with Alicia Where to start with our five weeks in California? Our flight out with Delta was disastrous (seats assigned last minute, delays, flight change, lost baggage), but we made it to Sacramento where Alicia and Dante picked us up. Well, more accurately, Alicia picked us up and Dante cowered in the back of the car wedged under the passenger seat, a pillow and a variety of bags. Alicia’s dog is adorable but extremely anxious about driving ... read more
Casazza Family Trip After Viv, Andrew and Cindy decided that sharing a room would be a small price to pay in exchange for a family cruise on the Mediterranean, we were set to fly to Italy and take a trip on the Costa Romantica. Costa is an Italian cruise line with an international but mostly Italian clientele. While most of the entertainment is American music, the announcements are made in five languages. Unfortunately, Cristin stayed behind to work and we missed her the whole time. On our itinerary were Catania in Sicily, Izmir in Turkey, two Greek Islands and the port outside Athens. We packed a very different suitcase than usual (we don't normally need formal wear on our backpacking trips) and headed to Rumson to meet up with our parents to start the trip. Flight ... read more
In June, we went to Virginia to see the rhododendrons in peak bloom on Mount Rogers (southwestern VA on the border with Tennessee). We combined this with a stop in DC to see Sahtiya and visiting a great winery in southeastern VA. So, it was a lot of driving for one weekend but a wonderful time, especially after two months off of traveling. We drove down from NJ and stayed with our awesome college friend Sahtiya. We went to a delicious tapas place for dinner and caught up over a lot of laughs. We then ate ice cream on her awesome deck until I (Cindy) fell asleep sitting up on a porch swing. We didn't get to see many of the people we love in DC because we had lunch reservations the next day, two hours ... read more
