Hi it's Tara and Joey here from Melbourne! Two of our good friends are getting married overseas, one in Lombok, the other Spain! This inspired us to travel for a little bit longer. First destination: Bali.

Europe May 20th 2011

I have to leave for Melbourne today and have not yet mentioned the rest of Spain and Amsterdam. It’s amazing that the five weeks has gone by already yet while I was experiencing it, I had the odd moment of not knowing if I could cope with another day off and felt like I needed to have some normalcy. Normalcy. I don't know what that is anymore. In one sense I am looking forward to going home and moving forward but on the other side I feel a bit apprehensive, as though I’m not quite ready. It was though I was expecting to go back home feeling stronger about my path, feeling I had more direction or that I would know what to do about some small part of my seemingly turbulent life back in Melbourne. ... read more

30th April (Apologies, last date was supposed to read ‘29th’ April but can’t work out how to change it, especially with slow internet here). On the way to Barcelona: (For Peter) So on 30th April, after our night out in Paris, we took the plane to Barcelona. We were travelling with Ryan Air. How was our experience with Ryan Air you ask? Well, I’ll tell you! First of all, we were surrounded by Spanish people as we made our way through all the little things you have to do to get to your gate – which wasn’t a bad experience of course – but I could tell immediately the Spanish had that bit of flamboyance and jolliness or passion that you assume they have. When Joey and I made it to the weapon detectors (or water ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France May 19th 2011

19th April After becoming engaged we decided to have a crazy night out in Paris. Since we were staying next to the “red light district” of Paris, the Moulin Rouge area, we thought you had struck gold. Only thing is the place was dead, it was more like a ghost town. Each bar we went into was fairly quiet, except for one that had a dance floor. Parisians are interesting in the way they dress. It feels as though you have walked into an art house movie – everyone has either bought their clothing from an op shop or gotten their fashion style from an op shop mannequin. Either way – it’s vintage day every day in Paris. The young men are decked out in grandpa caps, coloured tshirts and black jackets. Every jacket is 80’s ... read more

27th – 30th April – Paris - Montmartre. While on the plain to paris we are served penne pasta and it’s such a nice change to all the rice we have been eating. I am still craving a real vegetable though. We get into the airport and head out to the taxi rank. A taxi driver assumes we speak French and rolls off something we don’t understand. I suddenly find myself cocking my head to the side like Oscar, it’s not even the words I missed, it’s the amazement at how it sounds, such a fluid language, it’s mesmerizing and my brain doesn’t know where to begin to comprehend what’s going on and where to start in answering him. He reads out confusion so he translates into English and points us in the right direction. He ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Sengigi May 9th 2011

Up until April 26th. Lombok. How I don’t ever want to see you again and here I am having to write the same painful blog again – about nothing – due to bad Spanish internet connection. We paid 6 euros for the internet for 24hrs only to have to not work after 12 hours. How we are going to explain this in Spanish and get our internet back, I don’t know – but I guess if you’re reading this now, we managed, or we waited until Amsterdam. So, Lombok. To keep it quick, there wasn’t really much to see except for the occasional shack, then another shack, a bar with trafficked women, then another, then another shack, a perverted muslim man, maybe another or maybe they’re just staring at me because they’re not used to tourists ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gilli Trawangan April 29th 2011

Upon arriving to the Gili’s we asked the locals if they knew our friends and asked for Lachie, the groom. They tried to pronounce the name a few times and then scurried off. We stopped at a café and ordered some lunch and then a local comes back with a very short Indonesian man named “Loki”. They ask “is this your friend?” We giggle and thank them for their help but say no, he’s not the friend we are looking for but if he wants to be our friend too that’s okay. ☺ It was cute. We had only spent three days in the Gili’s and maybe it was enough but we had already made friends with the locals. I particularly liked Tino. He worked in a clothing and jewelry shop. At first he was trying ... read more

18th - 21st April Early morning of the 18th we meet Eyal out the front of our hotel at 7am so we can all catch a boat together to Gili Island. This is a small island off Lombok., there are three Gili islands. Lombok is where the wedding is going to be. We have heard our other friends are staying at Gili Island Trawangan. We have booked a car to take up to the harbour and a boat to take us quickly there. There are only so many boats leaving the harbour. Eyal is as I remember him. I met him once or twice quite a while back through the friends on this trip. He is hung over and explains as he is Jewish and with an Israeli background he found is very difficult to get ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta April 24th 2011

18th April 2011. Finally pinned Joey down to come to a monkey and temple tour with me and thank God it didn't start til 3pm as we were both hung over and eager to sleep in. We had so much to drink and didn't realise and in the morning we both had patches of last night missing. We had collected a brochure when we arrived in the airport on tours in Bali. The brochure looked professional was very reasonably priced (half the price of other tours) and said our tour included an air conditioned car, guide who speaks English and included a seafood dinner by the beach at sunset. When we found our guide he was very lovely, hardworking and gentle. He didn't speak much English and the air con was blowing warm air on us ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta April 17th 2011

First day of sleeping in for a while so decided not to do any tours today. Instead we decided to find our barings, work out where we are, where everything is and make plans and organise for tomorrow. After all, we both were told our plane would arrive in Danpasar, not near Kuta, at a totally different airport! We've laughed this off but it's made us a little worried for when we have to travel from Bali to Paris on the 27th. Sometimes it feels like nothing here is what it seems to be. The people here are very kind, friendly and I am warming up to them quickly. but they make up their own rules as they go. Bartering is just expected and I don't feel guilty about refusing a sale because they just smile ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta April 17th 2011

So we arrive at the airport next to Kuta and begin making our way through customs. We find our bags first and two guys in uniform run up to us and take our bags. I almost told them to STOP and back off but hesitated due to their appearance. Joey hesitated too and then seemed relaxed about the whole thing. I had a feeling these guys were just after a tip but decided to go along with it as they got us through customs really fast - almost too easily. Then they took up around the corner near the exit and demanded money from us - the kind of 'happy' ending I was expecting but was bit expecting them to hold out a large note and say "you must pay this one". We paid it to ... read more
