We flew into BK at 6am in the morning and 2 hours later we were on the Koh San rd looking of somewhere to stay. I had been here 8 years ago and as we walked up the street I asked a guy where the Koh San rd was to which he replied you’re on it. I couldn’t believe how much it had changed almost beyond recognition. It was very different clean and full of bars and restaurants. Tourism is big business in Thailand now and BK has reaped the benefits as well in part I think loosing part of its identity slightly. Pam went straight to bed but I couldn’t sleep. I went for a walk and enjoyed in contrast to our home in India for the past 4 and a half months the ... read more
Pondicherry We arrived early morning to a converted old house. We got the penthouse room which was very basic had a fridge and was very clean it also had a great roof garden with a table and chairs that was just for our use. It was owned by a very charismatic French man. Pondicherry is an old French colony and it is very obvious as the food is very French and the street names are in French also. We decided we would just stay here until we had to leave from Chennai in 5 days time. After traveling solidly for 2 months, moving from place to place staying no longer than 4 days in each place we were both tired. So we ate great food and had pizza and beers on the roof! We rented a ... read more
So we had escaped unscathed from old man river and his crazy pad lock throwing antics. In contrast the bus journey through the rolling hills of the Western Ghats that followed, was beautifully serene and peaceful. It took 3hrs and we snaked our way through deep lush green jungle to the hill station of Kodai kanal. In those 3 hours the temperature plummeted from somewhere in the mid thirties to around 6 or 7 degrees at 2000 meters above sea level. As soon as the bus pulled into the station, touts leapt up their feat and ran to the bus windows, eying their potential prey in us and a few other backpackers that were among the majority of locals. We got out and started walking down Kodai’s main street with a string of touts in close ... read more
Varkala to Madurai We arrived in Varkala in the sweltering heat of midday. Varkala beach was at the bottom of the huge cliffs. The eagles soared high on the thermals, gliding overhead, we liked this place already.. We got a place to stay in the funky art house café. Our first night in Varkala we decided to drink the rum we hadn’t drank on the river boat. XXX rum in a plastic bottle. When on a budget do as students do, and we did. We filled up coke bottles with rum and coke and sat in our bar and proceeded to get very drunk as we hadn’t drank in an age. We were listening to the open Mic night that was on when Seamus a guy from Dublin stood up and sang some amazing songs. It ... read more
So from Wyanad to Ooty we had to endure 8 consecutive local buses in one day. Each one was more crowded than the last and the journey took over 13 hrs. Pam was great company and was in such good form that day, never complaining once while i only paused from my chirpy whistling to ask the man beside me to take his snoring, dribbling head off my fucking shoulder.....Please. The idea was to get to a town called Mattapalyam five hours away from Ooty, our Goal. Then, to get up the next day at 5am to catch the Toy Train up the mountain to Ooty. In typical form and true to our character at this stage, we didn't realise the direction we were traveling from and therefore ended up driving through Ooty and then all ... read more
Hi there! Been a while since our last blog AGAIN... Its been go go go since Paradise Beach in Gorkarna. We left the beach on a motorized boat and the dolphins came out to say their goodbyes, as the eagles flew overhead in the thermals. We were headed for Mysore via Bangalore. We got our sleeper bus at about 7 in the evening and about 11 hours later after a very comfortable sleep on the best overnight bus yet we arrived in Bangalore. For those of you who don't know (not in a condescending way) what a sleeper bus is let me explain. On one side of the bus there are single beds and on the other is double beds. You can choose from an upper or a lower, we always from now on will go ... read more
So we left our beach hut in Patnem Goa kicking and screaming. It was hard as we loved it so much there. It was so laid back. We decided to get a train to Hampi which is about 10 hrs inland. Ourselves and a friend from Goa, David, got the train by day accross to Hampi. It was a good decision. The scenery was great all the way accross and just like with owld Iarnród Éireann at home you could open the carriage door of the train, traveling at 100 miles an hour and feel the wind in your face and wave to all the village kids as you passed through. After the 6th fly hit me in the same eye i decided to take my enthusiasm back to the seat i had paid for and ... read more
We got an overnight train, which was very comfortable, to Agra. We arrived in Agra very early and Stu had arranged for us to be picked up from the train station to go to our hotel. (Traveling in Style). We saw the Taj Mahal the following night by sunset from the back of the Taj in a public park. It was amazing the marble changed colour as the sunsets! The two of us really were in Awe! The Taj Mahal was closed on Fridays so we spent the day at the Red fort which was also an amazing structure. Wandering around white marble rooms and photographing the Taj Mahal from a distance. The following day we were up at 5 o'clock in the morning and we were the first people at the gates to the Taj. ... read more
