After my exam on Friday, I joined some friends on a weekend getaway to a cottage in the Finnish archipelago. We left on Friday and came back on Sunday morning; ready for Vappu, the most important holiday in the Finnish calendar. It has been a truly wonderful and contrasting 4 days. The first days were taken up by the cottage weekend and its incredible views and peaceful relaxation; immediately followed by two days of uncontrolled, alcohol-fuelled mayhem that not only enveloped the entire city of Turku, but the entire country of Finland. Cottage Weekend in Korppoo Countryside cottages are very common in Finland; many people own their own cottage in the Finnish countryside, lakeside areas, Lapland (in the Arctic Circle) and in the archipelago. The archipelago is located in the south-west and western coasts of Finland ... read more

Tallinn was seemingly unreachable for me. Something always prevented me from getting there. Eventually I reached it, albeit 4th time lucky. In the past 2 weeks I have tried 3 times to get to Tallinn and have failed for each of those 3 times. The first time was the clostest of the 3 as I and 2 friends actually went to Helsinki in order to get the ferry to Tallinn. However, when we got there we heard of another ferry that was cheaper and travelled there faster so we went around the ports of Helsinki looking for that. Eventually we found out that that ferry line was not operating yet as the ocean was still covered with ice and only the bigger ships were operating. We quickly hurried back to the Viking Line terminal to find ... read more

From Russia With Love

March 5th 2006

Since I decided to come to Europe for my exchange trip, I longed to visit St Petersburg and Moscow (I also would love to see Siberia, but we'll leave that for another day when I can speak Russian). I was looking forward to St Petersburg and generally I was not disappointed. It was nice to find out that Turku was actually the first sister-city of St Petersburg. So I was going from one sister to another...which sounds a bit dodgy. St Petersburg was founded (only) about 300 years ago by the Tsar Peter the Great. It was the centre and capital or Russia for many years until the Soviet Revolution, when the captial was moved back to Moscow. During its reign as the supreme city of Russia, St Petersburg developed culturally in leaps and bounds and ... read more

Ocean Walking

Naantali is a small town north of Turku and is known as the summer hot spot of Finland. Yet we thought it was a good idea to visit it in the middle of winter. It was not a good idea. Despite Naantali being a peaceful and quaint town to spend a day, we spent only a few hours because the cold was unbearable. As if -19 degrees during the middle of a sunny day was bad enough, but the wind cut life a knife. A knife is understatement... more like an axe. Like Turku, Naantali is a coastal city. When I mean coastal, I mean the ocean is next to it, but there is an extensive (and apparently beautiful) archipelago which blocks most horizon views and most of the wind, but some of the wind still ... read more

Stockholm is simply an amazing city. I went in winter time for only 3 nights (practically 2) and I loved it. I will definitely be here in summer time to explore it more deeply. Out of all the capital cities I have been to, it is the best. And remember, that's only my winter perception! Stockholm is incredibly easy to get to from Turku. Just hop on a ferry that costs E20 and you're off. However, the ferry takes 10 hours and it's quite boring when you're by yourself. I tried meeting and sociallising but everyone kept to themselves, which sucked. Fraz had booked a hostel for me as I was staying the first night by myself. I was to meet Fraz, Joel, and Fraz's cousin Shaz (yes, I know how Fraz and Shaz rhynes). Finding ... read more

Helsinki My cousin Jason accompanied me to Helsinki, and then onwards to Turku where I will be living for the next year (pronounced Toorrrrrrrkoo with a rolling "R"). We landed in Helsinki and got a taxi to our hostel. The taxi was really expensive, but we had no other option. It's not as if we can walk there with the 2 big bags I was carrying and the fact it was -10 degrees outside. The whole city was covered snow, and at night time with all the lights on it looked amazing. Helsinki is a nice city, but its not the best capital city to visit. It reminds me of Canberra in that respect. Helsinki was only founded about 200 years ago when the Russian empire had once again won the area of Finland from ... read more

December 28th 2005

So after my "eventful" depature (to say the least) I had arrived in London in relatviely good condition. Mahen Uncle picked me up from the airport, and we managed to travel from Heathrow to Epsom (in Sth-West London) in about 1.5 hours, which is a rubbish time. We were driving between 6 and 8am or something, and as you can imagine its near peak hour traffic in London (of all places), so it was pretty slow going. It was great to see my relatives there again, even though I see them quite often as they are constant visitors to Perth during Christmas time. Shantha Aunty was, as always, quite excited to see me. She had taken 2 weeks off so it was great to spend some time with her and we talked about many things including ... read more

December 12th 2005

December 12th 2005 will always be etched in my memory as one of the worst days of my life. What should have been an exciting day for me (and a sad day for my parents) started out horrible, and only got worse. Many of you who read this know of my trip to Europe, but only a few unprivileged people know of what a strange experience it was just to get there. As I'm only starting this journal 4.5 months after I started my journey, these following entries will be retrospective of my travels so far. Future travels will of course be added as time permits. I will try to retell my past experiences as best as I can. But this experience I remember as if it was yesterday. I was to leave from Perth-Singapore-London to ... read more
