Again, since I am truly horrible at updating this thing on anything like a regular schedule, allow me to take you back, back in time to my fifth week here . . . and my first trip! Hopefully, many more will follow . . . There’s not much to tell about my fifth week in Paris except for what I did that weekend, which was visit my friend Sarah Wootton in Madrid. She’s studying there for the semester, and since she’s living with a host family I unfortunately couldn’t stay with her, but she still took me out on the town and showed me a great time. Part of the weekend was complicated by the fact that Sarah’s not allowed to have visitors stay with her without the express permission of her host family, which meant ... read more

Man, I am terrible at this updating thing. Sorry, folks: with sporadic internet and free time, I guess this is the best I can do. Again, let’s skip back in time to weeks two and three of my stay here in the city of lights, from January 21st to around February 2nd. Sorry to condense, but in order to catch up I’m going to rush a little so that I can get up to present-day updating. I started class on Monday, January 21st; for those who don’t know, I’m taking 4 classes: a French language/grammar class (required); a classed called Theater in Paris, where we pretty much study a play that’s in Paris right now and then go see it; Great Works of Art and the Modern reinterpretations, basically an art history course (so far we’ve ... read more

In my attempt to catch up at blogging my French adventures, I present you with week two, January 14-20: Rather than giving us time to recover from Nice, as any sane program would do, Sarah Lawrence hauled us out of our beds and had us back at Reid Hall bright and early the next morning for Week 2 of orientation. For the most part, it was all very useful and necessary; we learned a lot of practical things about living in France (banking, the metro, telephones), we got a tour of Reid Hall, we got to meet our future professors and see if their classes would interest us, etc. They also got us out into the city several times, making sure we weren’t just wasting away in our rooms being homesick. Among other things, we saw ... read more

(from 1/9/08) Bonjour tout le monde- I just wanted to send out a kind of mass update and let you know how I'm doing, since I don't have any reliable phone or e-mail in my dorm yet (I'm using the free wireless internet at my school for the moment). I should have internet access tonight (cross your fingers for me!), and if so I'll try to give some of you a call on Skype just so I can talk to you in real-time. If I'm not able to contact you tonight, it's not my fault; the man who gives out wireless network addresses wasn't in until this morning, and I had to leave for my first test before he actually made it into the office. So: I'm in Paris! And I'm checked into my room successfully, ... read more

Hello all . . . Updating my travel blog (at last!) to let you all know how everything is, and how it's been. I'm sorry I haven't been keeping you all in the loop, but my first two weeks of Orientation were crazy: we were at Reid Hall most days from early morning (8:30-9:30) until late evening (6-8!), and I've also been sick, so between being tired and busy . . . well. Fortunately Orientation is now over, and I started classes last week; it's been a lot more interesting and less stressful! Arriving in Paris was crazy, and for a long time I felt both lost and mildly terrified every time I ventured outside, but I think I'm finally starting to adjust, to get used to living here. I'm not getting acclimated or passing as ... read more
