Happy Birthday! Finally got my computer connected.....and now I can read your Blogs. I do keep in touch with your Dad and Doreen....but have lost touch with you and Sydney. Carol is trying to find your phone number for me. Anyway I hope you have a happy birthday.....and maybe I'll hear from you. Love, Grandma Pat
National Teacher Day Jake,
Here in the states we get a full week. The first full week of March is teacher appriciation week, the Tuesday of that week is Teacher Day!
~Doreen
same moon Hi Jake, The moon has been beautiful here too. The big lakes are still mostly frozen, but it's about 70 degrees F. What a great trip, and great photo's! I am off to church for singing tonight, and lots more singing this weekend. We sang Bach's St. John's Passion last weekend, and of course we will sing Handel's Messiah this weekend.
Triumph! This blog was muy muy triumphant, Jake. So they air the NCAA down there? I wouldnt have suspected Mexicans gave two turd nuggets about basketball. But as you know, I know nothing about Mexico. Anyway, how bout them Northern Iowans!
Cascarones... Jake,
Laura Lee and I are going to get some cascarones, colored egg shells filled with confetti, for Sydney (I had to look these up on Wikipedia). I hope you get some for Maria (or vice versa). Enjoy holy week...I am singing Bach, St. John's passion. So, as a Johnnie, you ought to know it well! Sunny and 46 degrees today! Hallelujah....we will be singing that too! ;)
Great photos... Thanks Jake....I have two images of you in my head from this trip. 1) You sitting on the sidewalk outside the greyhound station in San Diego, reading, with you backpack by your side, and 2) You walking into Mexico with those twelve foot chain link fences on each side of you! You are trully a world traveler, fearless, but smart. Keep clicking and writing.
just another broken bone Jake, Do you remember when you shattered your ankle skateboarding in high school? I asked you to choose three hobbies less hazardous than skateboarding. You choose bowling, and two other "safer" activities. Well, do more of THOSE! haha All these "minor" injuries really start to hurt when you are about 50 years old.
Enough lecture, you are an adult now. It sounds like you are living well and learning (to often the hard way). If you like to people in another country you can't go wrong. If you like the food it's terrific. It sounds like you have both.
Love Dad
PS Take good care of my daughter when she visits!
Hey Jake We had dinner with Syd and your dad last week. A funny yet awkward moment occurred when I brought up your broken bone and your Dad had not heard about it yet. Sorry. Your sister than explained it to him. Apparently your 1000 facebook friends got the memo before him. HAHA. Your Dad also took us to a Timberwolves game. We were sitting in the 10th row. I started bad mouthing T Wolves point guard Johnny Flynn. I was saying he wasn't very good and that he's too short. The guy in front of me said that Flynn's a tad under 6'1''. The guy then said he knew this because Flynn is his nephew. Another awkward moment. I felt like an idiot. It was funny. Have fun in Mexico.
Hey!!!!! Jake! You sound so grown up! I'm glad to hear that you are doing well (minus the broken arm-it made me think of that video of you breaking your arm a few years ago skateboarding-be more careful! and get better soon!) I hope you have a sensational holiday break, and can't wait until you come home to visit! Miss you tons! Say hi to your mom!
do I always have to have a clever title to a comment? Wow! That was quite a meal, Jake. Sounds like it wasn't too bad a break and that's good. A great book about ancient (a relative term, right?) Mexican history is The Conquest of New Spain, by Bernal Diaz. Diaz was one of Cortez's men and it's about their expedition into Mexico. Do you have a street address (you MUST!) because that way I can send you something. Heh heh. Love, Aunt Carol

Jake! Hey Jake - Thanks for the shout out! (I like David's expression: "Excellent bloggage.")
All your blogs make me wish I was there - and so happy for this incredible, life-transforming experience you're having. You will value it forever.
Do you need any pictures of Baby Sophia? Let me know.
Love ya, kiddo,
Celeste
PS - I don't watch a lot of football but this Favre-becomes-a-Viking saga has been quite diverting!
Happiness Hi Jake,
You look and sound really happy. I am really proud of you and the blog is great. Syd is going to Vegas for Thanksgiving, so I will be with Laura Lee and her friends. No snow yet, but the small ponds were covered with ice earlier this week. Be safe.
Glad you are Happy! Hi Jake-Nice to hear from you and that things are going much better. I am glad you enjoy the work and your students. Perhaps you can garner a reputation. We are doing just fine. My energy level is increasing and Betty is in veery good health. We are involved here in our community and the Church, play a lot of bridge and spent time on this machine;. Kerps our mind working. Please add john Ingham to your Blog site,groveingham@gmail.com. He did his doctoral work in a Community south east of Mexico city and I am sure would be interested in your work.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Feb.
Much love,
Ed
Dad, actually there is no real way to not get swindled in some sittuations here. I have the face of a foreigner, and even if I speak perfectly, and KNOW what the real price is, only a native will not get screwed. It really doesn have to do with the bills you carry, rather the face you carry. It happens everywhere too, not just mexico. Think about cab drivers in New york taking long routes etc. Here the buses are a flat rate, 5 pesos. Sometimes they are negotiable, but usually not as they are pretty cheap. They do not give you transfers, everything here is still done without computers although some buses have sensors to count how many people get on and off.
SWINDLERS... I feel sorry for all the Mexicans that ride my bus in Minnesota. They really don understand the currency. Yesterday, three stepped on, the first two paid $1.75, the proper amount, and the third $2.25 (rush hour fare). I will try to explain it to him tomorrow. What they don realize, and I didn realize is, a bus driver can basically give anyone a free ride. We even have a special button to press for those situations. If you have a little money and ask nicely, most will give you a discount. Transfers are complicated for a bus too, I wonder if they have those in Puebla. You basically can ride on ONE fare for two and a half hours. I think one of the keys to keep from getting swindled is to keep big bills hidden from public view.
Hi Jake Jake -
I am so impressed with what you're doing. I've really been enjoying hearing from you and following your adventure. You're so smart! Stay safe.
Love ya,
Celeste
