last monday i went to a doctor in antigua for a bacterial infection and was given an antibiotic to take....that night i woke at midnight and was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. i called alejandro and asked him to bring me to the hospital. after 15 hours in the hospital (and many, many needles)...i was sent home with new medications. it is now over a week later and my condition has not improved. my skin is red and itchy...constantly!. i have not had a good nights sleep since last sunday night. yuck! last saturday i was feeling a little [View Full Entry]

i've heard about black beaches but have never seen. the beaches in libertad, el salvador are black because of the volcanic ash. they are black and rocky. and the ocean current is so strong. when the waves roll back into the water, they move the rocks around. and as the rocks tumble, they make an amazing sound. it was neat to hear. our rooms were right on the beach so we were lulled to sleep by the ocean and the sound of the rocks tumbling around. i went for a swim in the ocean and the strong currents made it an [View Full Entry]

well i had one of the best weekends of my life. i missed saturday´s trip to santa clara with the school because i overslept but i ended up going with alejandro on sunday. it was a conscious decision to oversleep. some nights i only get a few hours of sleep because the street dogs start barking around 1AM and don´t stop until 5ish. there are hundreds of dogs and they make a lot of noise. friday night it rained and all the dogs were hiding out and being quite. so it was great to rest up. alejandro came to san pedro [View Full Entry]

here is cami´s travel blog from yesterday. it is really special so i wanted to share it with you all. Back in Costa Rica and its just how I remember it. This morning Katie and I went shopping and bought some picture frames, playdough, a boquet of flowers and a soccer ball. Our first stop was at the comedor where I worked in January with the kids. We grabbed a cab and getting there was like I never left. We arrived at 10:30 just as planned so we could be there to help serve the food to the children at 11:00. [View Full Entry]

hola amigos! i just logged on to post some pictures. hope you enjoy them. sunday we had a "school trip" to chichicastenango for the native mayan market. it is one of the largest markets in the mayan area. for more info visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chichicastenango. it was a bit crazy...lots of people...lots of energy....lots of textiles and crafts. i enjoyed it, but i tend to get a bit suffocated in large crowds. it was a chilly day in chichi, so a few of us took a break from the crowd and sat in an open air coffee shop with warm beverages. i enjoyed [View Full Entry]

it is so nice to be back in san pedro. of all the places i've been so far, i still find san pedro the most beautiful. i arrived wednesday, found a hotel, had dinner and enrolled in spanish school. thursday i moved in with my family. the house is great...my room is large and has a nice, comfy bed with TWO pillows. there is a terrace with a great view of the lake...where i can either sit in a hammock and read or at a desk and study. i have my own clean bathroom with hot water. ahhhhhhhhh.... so nice. for [View Full Entry]

i feel strange writing about this in my travel blog but it would feel even stranger to not include it since it is a big part of my experience right now. yesterday i learned that my grandmother, ruth persia, has passed away on sunday, june 9th. our family was very blessed to have had her in our lives for so many years....so warm, pure, loving, friendly and a great sense of humor. my dad was telling me how brave and good spirited she was, right up to the end. i will never forget her big, curious, warm eyes. and her chew...which [View Full Entry]
