Kabilittha

a trip by Laki Ratnayake
From: May 4th 2011
Until: May 9th 2011

In the heart of the National Park of Yala (Zone 2) is a sacred spot known as the Kabilittha temple. There are no inhabitants in these parts of the dense forest. But the place is full of reptiles, crocodiles, leopards, bears and wild elephants. It will take two days to reach this destination crossing rivers with strong currents and marshy land.

There is a belief that in order to reach this destination one must purify himself by abstaining alcohol, meat and fish for at least one month. One must also refrain from sexual activity for this period of time. It is said that if an individual attempts this journey and fails to comply with the purification process, the whole group will be obstructed from proceeding.

I will attempt this journey on the 30th of April.
