Travel Blog | somelife http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/somelife/ Travel adventures in journals and photos from somelife en-us Thu, 24 Dec 2009 05:22:34 +0000 Thu, 24 Dec 2009 05:22:34 +0000 Laid Back Laos I've never been to a city as relaxed as Luang Prabang. As mentioned in the previous blog entry it was immediately clear that the contrast with Vietnam was going to be felt immediately. I'm now in Thailand and the 5 nights I spent there are already a blur. I did very little during my time there. I'd wake up around 530 AM each day when the monks in the local Wat started banging their huge dru http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Laos/West/Luang-Prabang/blog-449134.html Good Mornning Vietnam Hanoi and Sapa Hi allWell the minute I got off the airport here in Laos I knew that if I didn't get right down to writing this blog it would never happen. Why you ask well simply put the difference is culture and ambiance between Vietnam and Laos is so staggering that the crazyness which is Hanoi will mellow from absolute insanity down to a mere shall we say eccentricity after a few more hours of monks http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Vietnam/Red-River-Delta/Hanoi/blog-447194.html Holiday in Cambodia As a kid if I ever thought of Cambodia it was probably in reference to either the Dead Kennedy's song or the Vietnam war. Like many American's the idea of actually going to visit a place as dark and mysterious as Cambodia always sounded mysterious and downright dangerous. How times change...travelling to Siem Reap last weekend to visit the temples around Angkor Wat was nearly magical. Just http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/blog-443145.html F1 Singapore and Carla's visit Hi allI Hope this post finds you all well and enjoying the coming autumn or spring if you are down underSo its been ages since my last entry. So much for once a week. Since the last entry Carla and her bloke Joao have visited left visted left visited and left once more Was great to get to know Joao a bit and see Carla again. We shared a few too many beers some curry a couple of pub http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Singapore/blog-440707.html My first visitor from London Its been a long break between entries again but no excuses...Mike was here the other week and I wasted no time getting him out to the pub quiz where I was sure he could help improve our team's dismal record. We came in dead last the day he arrived...but Mike redeemed himself the following week when our second to last place finish got us a free pitcher of Stella compliments of the first place http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Malaysia/Sabah/Kota-Kinabalu/blog-430068.html Shanghai and Hangzhou Been a while since my last entry...not that life hasn't moved on...the adventures continue There've been a few good reasonsexcuses for not writing every week like I'd planned. Primarily the unexpected and inconceivable passing of Brian Johnson a couple weeks ago. Brian was the one guy that has been involved in every single project I've worked on since I moved to England in 2001 in fact it http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/China/Shanghai/blog-421959.html A clean shaven face more beachescats and a few naughty monkeys If you are in the US on Friday the 3rd of July you were probably having a BBQ and enjoying a cool Miller High Life or a PBR while shooting off fireworks. If you are in the UK unless you are as lucky as Debs and got to go to centre court at Wimbledon you were probably watching Andy Murray battle it out on TV when you were supposed to be working. But if you were in Kuching Malaysia you spent http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Malaysia/Sarawak/Kuching/blog-416451.html Week 2 Singapore nights and Indonesialite Hello again folks Feels like its been a long action packed week. Not sure that there is lots to tell bc I'm just not going to talk about the day to day grind of work...its going well of course and I've settled into a routine...morning train ride in on the amazing public trans system of Singapore air conditioned frequent cheap clean ... the discipline clearly enforced ... 500 if you get c http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Indonesia/blog-413155.html Week One A New Home Hi allSince I'm not likely to be able to keep up with everyone properly over the phone the next 4 months and have grown tired of posting photos on facebook I've decided to try out this newfangled 'Blogging' thing that I heard about on that BBC news show ClickBy the way I feel like its been about a month since I left London. It was a bit of a whirlwind towards the end with work and a cold http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Singapore/Commonwealth/blog-409756.html
