To be honest giving it all up wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Where as a lot of my friends my age are settling down and having children - this has never appealled to me.....in fact I have always run kicking and screaming from any type of 'normality'. I often look at these people and wonder why they are happy in their small and compact lives. There is a quote that I like.....'the more you travel, the bigger the world seems'. I cannot remember who said it, but it has always stuck with me....
I have no idea whether this trip will answer all those questions I have burning inside me or whether it will make me a better person inside....but at least I will have a darn good time finding out! ;-)

Hi guys Yes it's me....I haven't fell into the abyss - I am still alive and kicking. Just had real problems trying to get wifi to upload my pictures. So I will load the photo's now and add my comments later (don't need wifi for that). Still having a ball and can't believe it's nearly over.... read more
OK well we have been to so many places the brain gets a little hazy...or it could be age!!!! I forgot to mention two other places we visited -: How could I forget the stomach turning flight over the Nazca lines! Even with a dose of sickness pills I still managed to feel queasy. The pilot (a remanant from the Battle of Britain) was sharply banking the aircraft left and right. The flights are well known for this stomach churning feat and unfortunately I knew this before I entered the small 5 seater aircraft. It is the only way to see the lines, which were interesting....after I was on the ground!!!! I have a theory that someone actually goes out a night drawing these designs into the ground!!!! The other trip was also as stomach churning. ... read more
Our first stop in Peru was the seaside resort of Punta Sal. We camped on the beach beside a hostal. On the first day Kirsty had a whole pig ordered which we spit roasted on the beach. It ws really interesting...having been a former veggie for 15 years I am usually quite squemish when it comes to seeing my food with a head, floppy ears, curly tail and 4 feet. This time however I don´t know if it was total immersion into the practicallities of the situation, but I had no problem at all!!!! Also you don´t eat...you starve!!!! We named him Nelson!! The second day myself, Sue and Nigel went for a walk along the beach for 2 hours!!! All along the beach were washed up fish and oyster shells. We were accompanied by the ... read more
Sorry guys for not posting lately...but as you would expect communications can be a problem down here. I am alive and well for all those worrying about me. I am currently in Chile...so I have a lot of catching up to do. At the moment I am in a wi fi black hole...so I am afraid no photo´s for the momento. Ecuador turned out to be great...We ended up staying in the new town of Quito...right near all the action of resturants and bars. I had already checked out the old town on my Galapagos trip so it was nice to just chill and buy some dodgy black market DVDs .....recent films are only a dollar here!!!!! One funny thing about Quito is that just outside the city is a great big monument and park to ... read more
When I told my friends and family that my trip included Colombia, I was met with a series of gasps, and cries of 'you will get kidnapped at gun point' or at the very least they were convinced that I would have all my valuables stolen. Although in my heart I knew that this was as remote as me becoming the next Prime Minister, I did have a slight feeling of trepidation on entering the country. Every time I saw a uniformed army officer my stomache hit the ground just in case it happened to be a FARC rebel. As it happened all my fears were misplaced, I am still alive with all my valuables intact. Colombia....as it turns out is no different to any of the other countries we visited along the way. In fact ... read more
Ok everyone knows that going to the Galapagos is expensive, but I said to myself 'what the hell' you only live once!!!! Most people I know have raved about the Islands and this was my chance to experience them first hand without the aid of David Attenborough on TV. Also if your going to do it....do it in style!!!! No camping, no overlanding this was 5 star luxuary all the way. Our trip started with 2 nights at the Quito Hotel situated in the new town of Quito. The hotel was set on a hill overlooking a valley, with snowcapped mountains in the background. There was a swimming pool, gym, jacuzzi, steam and sauna rooms. I had a great big double bed to myself....need I say anymore. The only down side was Andy, my humpty room ... read more
I must admit that of all the Central American countries Costa Rica was the one I was most looking forward to and which didn't disappoint...well almost! After our brush with the Nicaraguan criminal element we were glad to be moving on into Costa Rica. La Fortuna was to be my only stop in Costa Rica because four of us (myself, Andy, Simon and Jackie) were leaving early to go to the Galapgos Islands prior to the two week break whilst the truck was being shipped to Colombia. La Fortuna is the town from which you can do a number of activities and also is next door (literally) to Arenal Volcano which is still active. The 5 star Arenal backpackers hostal was very luxurious (if every hostal was like this I would'nt need to stay in a ... read more
Ok so I had planned to write my journal everyday, and like most things I start off well and then things go downhill. I have always said that I didn't want to be missing out on anything because I had to stay in and write my journal. Trouble is 4 countries later and things start to get a little bit hazy. So here goes on getting you up to date...... Firstly I have to name and shame Andy yet again!!!! This time for not honouring his bets. In Honduras we were watching a film on tv and he said the actress in it wasn't Catherine Zeta Jones and I said it was. Of Course I was right, but he bet me $1000. He is always harping on about honouring agreements....shame on you!!!! Anyway Nicaragua, the poorest ... read more
