We just finished watching our final sunset for the trip and are getting ready to fly back to Portland tomorrow. We spent yesterday on the dock in the sun, with periodic swims when it got hot. It seemed a little hotter the past few days but tough to tell, and when you have A/C in the room and are always within a few steps of the pool or the Caribbean it doesn't much matter. A couple nights ago we were worried that we hadn't seen a really good sunset, so we went down to the dock and swam as the sun dropped below the horizon. It was nice, but sharing it with two adolescent boys jumping from the top level into the water next to us kind of killed the moment. One of them either had ... read more
Tuesday morning and facing only two more full days here. It has gone quickly - especially since reaching the halfway point a few days ago. Yesterday we spent the day in West Bay, which is just about at the western tip of the island. The guidebook said that it has Roatan's best beach and we weren't disappointed. White sand, very light blue water almost absent of sea grass, and a wall of rock (old coral) at the end of the beach that is a beautiful, dramatic boundary to a very pretty stretch of beach. We liked the beach more than Sandy Bay (mainly docks) and West End but West Bay is the first spot we've seen with large hotels along the beach and dozens+ of chairs in front to sunbath in. We walked along a well-trafficked ... read more
We've passed the halfway point of our trip. Yesterday we finished our scuba dive certification and did our second open water dive. Beautiful swimming along the reef. There were so many fish next to us, then if we looked up there would be a school or two passing above us also. Our favorite may have been a large teal-colored fish with a yellow argyle pattern on its tail (actually a couple colors, not unlike a blue, teal, yellow and red crayon getting left in the sun and blending together with bits and pieces staying the original color). It chased a smaller fish all around a piece of coral next to us for 10 seconds or so (very cool!), before losing the smaller fish and pooping next to us as it swam away (not so cool). We ... read more
Today we did our first open water dive. We checked with the dive shop here (Octopus Dive School) yesterday and decided to do the two-day PADI certification course. This will enable us to dive on future trips, and since Roatan is supposed to have some of the best diving in the world we figured this is the place to learn and get certified. We had homework last night and actually stayed up quite late reading the book (73 page chapter with additional video on DVD) and got up early this morning to cram. First Kate giving us homework for the wedding and now more homework on our honeymoon! We talked with the instructor a bit before going out to the end of the dock and putting our equipment together and getting in the water. Definitely unlike ... read more
We have arrived and settled into the Blue Bahia on Roatan. We are staying in Sandy Bay on the North side of the island, about a 20 ride from the airport. The beach has docks going out into the water and you can see small waves lightly breaking over the reef a hundred yards or so out. Sandy Bay has some sea grass but the clear spots are a pretty light blue. Flying in on the plane we could see some really pretty water on the island. The weather is warm, around 90 each day so far, and very humid. There is generally a breeze coming through off the water but it sure gets hot when the breeze stops for a few minutes. Our room at the Blue Bahia is very large (the "Starry Nights") and ... read more
Just finished up a week in Puerto Vallarta. We took advantage of great weather throughout the week to find a pleasant balance of seeing the local sights, laying in the sun, swimming, and general relaxing. We stayed in a condo owned by a family member about 4 km South of old town PV the whole week. It was a wonderful place, with an absolutely beautiful view of the bay and a large balcony, open living space and kitchen that always kept the water in view with ongoing waves softly crashing to the beach below to serve as a pleasant reminder of where we were. During the course of the week we made day trips nearly every day North into Puerto Vallarta or South to Boca or the Zoo. Besides sitting on the balcony with a book, ... read more
As season ticket holders for the Portland Trailblazers, one of the perks they offer is an evening of games, food, and meeting players. Ticket holders are invited for one of two evenings, with half of the players coming each night. There was a hamburger/hot dog buffet, free video games and bowling, and players there to meet and get a photo with. Pretty neat perk for ticket holders that just about makes it worth the four times we have to see Minnesota every year. Whether you were bowling with Steve Blake and Joel Przybilla, pop-a-shot with Rudy and Sergio Rodriguez, air hockey with Nic Batum, or rock band with Channing Frye, it was very cool to see players outside the normal context. Where else will I run into Michael Ruffin and welcome he and his kids to ... read more
Just got back from a camping trip to Mount Rainier with my parents, who had booked an extra camp site and Lauryn & I jumped at the opportunity to join them. We camped at Cougar Rock Campground, a typical car-camping spot, and in the morning we caught one of the frequent shuttles up to Paradise Inn and the Visitor's Center. There are a couple trails that lead out from the visitor's center and all are in great shape and nice and wide for hikers to easily traverse. We did the loop up to Panorama Point and the views of the mountain, the meadows, and South to the Cascade Range were all amazing. I've attached a number of photos, and look forward to our next opportunity to visit.... read more
Caye Caulker We have arrived at the final destination on our trip, Caye Caulker. We got up Thursday morning, early, and caught the water taxi from Placencia to the mainland and then the 730am bus from Independance north to Belize City ($11us each). It took about four hours and we passed through dry pine forests, some swamps, over hills and ridges, through flat lowlands, areas surrounded by jungle and others with pastures and farms as far as you could see. It was kind of nice to do our last significant trek over this stretch because it included elements of all the landscapes that we've seen throughout the region the past three+ weeks. The last stop before Belize City was in Belmopan, and it was strange to think that only three and a half weeks ago we ... read more
Placencia We caught the 7am boat to Belize yesterday morning. It was around an hour and a half across the bay, mostly through open water with the land off in the distance. It was another pretty trip, and a big change to be in open water with the hills around just blue rises along the western horizon and water as far off as you could see toward the east. Unfortunately, we had to slow down a couple times because of bottles and other garbage in the water. Our second day in Placencia there was a layer of bottles and other trash that had washed ashore all along the beach with even more bobbing along in the water, patrolling the shore. They guy we rented the room from said that was unusual but others said they had ... read more
