Travel to Galapagos - From: Inca Trail and Beyond
Our tour company to the Galapagos was Galamountain. I believe that there website is www.galamountain.com. We didn´t have the best experience with them, however, after our trip they changed the things we complained about and gave us a refund. Our trip was great for 4 of the 6 days. The two bad days were because we didn´t have a guide and the person they sent with us didn´t speak English (we paid for English-speaking guides) and admitted that he was there just to shepard us around. Other than those two days our experience was fantastic. Just an FYI, there are a bunch of tour companies that offer trips to the Galapagos and all of them seem to contract with other companies on the islands. For instance, 4 people may be going on the same trip, but all booked with different companies and each paid a different price. My wife and I are convinced that one could go to the Galapagos and arrange trips from there, thus spending a lot less. We saw a lot of ads for last minute trips at reduced prices.

Galapagos adventure! - From: Kay and John visit Ecuador
I was reading through your blog and wanted to comment about your travel agency you used. I noticed that their were a lot of hiccups and it caught my eye because I didn't have any problems with my travel agency. My wife and I took the Galapagos Cruise and went on the Galapagos Exlporer II. I was a little nervous at first because it is a small ship and I get seasick, but it was very stable. We had a marvelous time and our travel package included everything (flight, cruise, and food). If you or your group are planning on taking the trip again I highly recommend Wildlife Vacations, Inc. And, they don't charge a fee for credit cards! I will give you their contact info just in case: Website: www.galapagos-inc.com Email: reservations@wildlife-vacations.com Happy Traveling, John Jones

dude the Iraq war isn't about oil. it's about real estate. have you seen the shit they are doing in U.A.E.? That place is the new vegas, and soon we will own all the suburbs. GOLDMINE! I like your thoughts on McCain. The biggest reason I have supported him for all these years is he was so close to the middle. Hell he almost switched parties about 3 times. In the end though, he needed the support of the staunch conservatives, in order to get the nom. That of course was his downfall. Let's see, Joe Lieberman, or Sarah Palin? Hmmmm, thats a tuffy. Years of public service, and respectabillity, and a proven record of crossing party lines, despite one's own image, and political well being. The dude who championed the most aggressive appraoch to tackling climate change in the U.S., to his own demise. vs. the hot chick, who may or may not know that Africa isn't a country. She was really hot though. You should have seen the pics of her in jeans when she voted. That kinda hot, makes up for a whole lot of stupid. It is funny though. Both being Senators from AZ. Goldwater, and McCain. both fell victim to having to appeal to the conservative far right, and it killed them in the end.

I just thought i should tell you and Susan that i've started to make Auntie's house green. Besides the old cistern water system, i've started recycling everything and taking it over to uncle al's on saturdays to deposit- paper, plastic, metal and glass. I also got a bike recently, i've been riding that everywhere to avoid $4 a gallon gas. Take Care! Jeff

Some things are the same the world over - From: The Long Awaited Blog
Jeremy, first and most importantly: 1. Gaborone 2. John von Neumann 3. Was it the Kariba dam and the Zambezi River? I thought that was actually between Zambia and Zimbabwe. 4. Did you remember the measurement of 3.26 light years or the definition of the distance to a star with a parallax of one arc second? It is somehow refreshing to know that organizational infighting is the same the world over. I am sorry you had such a painful experience, but hopefully some good can come of it. Coffin Business - From: Things that make you chuckle
Hi Jeremy, Here in Ecuador, there is a law that a person who dies must be buried within 48 hours. That is unless there is special permission given. The special permission would probably only be given if the body is going to be embalmed. Embalming is not the normal custom here and is only done in very special cases when the family members cannot arrive within the allotted time for the "normal" burial. It is the custom here also that there is a continuous vigil all 48 hours before the burial. There are no special "viewing hours". Family members and friends stay with the body of their loved one from the moment of death until the burial. Blessings to you and Sue, Sharon LaBouef

Have you never seen a western? No matter how big, how scary, how utterly dangerous the street fight is going to be. When all the townsfolk clear out, shutter up the windows, and hit the deck, one brave man stays behind, and goes to work, night or day. The coffin maker. If you find yourself in the street, and you're all alone, hit the deck, for a gun fight is about to go down. I'd check and see if any hardened gang leader is just out of jail, and coming to town on the noon train to get revenge on the local sherriff who locked him up. If gary Cooper happens to be the sherriff, help the brother out, as he always ends up doin it himself.

Dem' coffins - From: Things that make you chuckle
Mr. King, I can clearly explain to you why this service is now open for 24 hours. It all started when a transexual named Dobbs Laurie started her/his buisness as a coffinmaker. She/he had the dream that in order to provide the best possible service for her/his customers, it must be available all the time. Her/his first customer past midnight was in fact a mob of gangsters. Their Godfather "Jimmy" had a run in with a nun who was packing, and they needed a coffin pronto to get his body under in order to be like "What Jimmy?" to the popo. She/he took their measurements and custom fabricated a coffin for them from the finest cherry wood that was in stock. Pleased with her/his work, they gave him/ her five grand, even though the work and materials, as well as the time put into it only added up to eight hundered dollars. This story has probably passed to all the funeral homes this side of the Atlantic, so your local coffinmakers probably now provide this service with hopes that they too will get a cool five grand.

My own spotlight - From: B-ball in Puyo
So Jeremy, on this very same Thursday there was a nasty accident on I-70 that kept me from getting the kids and getting to frisbee until 5:45. They were just starting a 7 on 7 game, so I went home and ran another 4 miles (to go with the 4 I ran at practice). Then I had a friend call up and ask if I could fill in for him in his rec basketball league. So I grabbed some shoes and went over to the rec center. Got there just before the game started and found out we had only five players. In the first three minutes I drilled a pair of threes and a layup off a steal. For the rest of the game I had a 6'1" 23 year old guarding me, did not get any more shots. (I did get a couple free throws.) But the other team seemed to think I was good, because every time I broke free they were yelling "Get 10! Get 10!"

cost to run your bulb - From: Mr. Wizard and Bill Nye
Jer, the cost to run your fluorescent bulb 24/7 is somewhere between $16 and $37 for the year depending on your electricity rate. For example at the average US rate of 9.86 cents per Kw hour it would run just over $16 for the year. If you had really expensive power cost like in say Hawaii (23 cents per Kw hour) it would cost $37. Your bulb uses 13.4 kw hours per month. Somehow I doubt that these scientific facts will sway your landlord but now you're armed.

Ockham's Razor - From: Life is Beautiful
The scientist who explained why four guys would be drinking beer at 9:30 in the morning was William of Ockham. Depeding on who you read, he said "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate" or "entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem." Literally it means entities should not be unecessarily multiplied. In common use, it argues that all things being equal, the simplest solution that explains all the evidence tends to be the best one. Glad to hear things are working a little better for you. Sounds like school kids are school kids wherever you go.

I suppose you already know that you'll have the makings of a good book by the time you're through. I am enjoying your entries. Your "Thoughts" formed the basis for much of the discussion at our last meeting. Thank you for sending them. The board has recently reorganized and most of the new members, including Stephanie and me, have not been to the Centro Desideri. So, it was good to get a clear-eyed assessment. We think that Umberto is to be commended for creating the center, for purchasing the land and building the structures. However, some of his attempts to initiate projects to help the local people have been less than successful. You can see evidence of that at the center; the empty fish pond, the weedy garden, the underused infirmary. We think that the primary problem is that the center lacks a trained person on site every day. The problem for us as an organization is that we do not have the funds to hire such a person. We are looking into grants to fund such a position, but I don't know where that will lead. Do you think that the Peace Corps could supply such a person? I'm asking you first because I'd like to know if this is even feasible. We would be willing to have this person live at the center and use the facilities as he/she saw fit. Basically, we would provide the infrastructure, the buildings at the center, and some other organization would provide the person with expertise in helping the local people. Let me know if this seems like a good idea. One of the catches to grant funding is that grant giving organizations want to see some successful projects before they committ funds, and we need the funds to begin successful projects. Get back to me when you can and give me your thoughts on this. If you think the Peace Corps in Ecuador would be interested in what we are proposing, I'd appreciate some contact information. Thanks. And thanks again for all your helpful observations. Tom

Plusses and deltas - From: Getting Busy
Jeremy, Sorry to hear about your being robbed. Glad to hear you (and Sue's 6th sense) were able to get your cell phone back. I also have to say "6:55-7:00 Get a beer out of the fridge and ..." Are you SURE you're in the peace corps? Frisbee has been pretty good the past couple of weeks. Lots of good action. Today's lessons: 1. Don't hang the frisbee in the air near Jake if he's on the other team. 2. Pay attention to Chris lurking behind his man. Fortunately Chris's five or six nice step up grabs were on my team this week. Go Cavs! Go Indians! Greg

Working on a symbol for you - From: The Old Forest
Jeremy, I am going to have Elisa work on a symbol for you. The other day I was doodling some runes and she asked me about them. I showed her some of the ROTK appendices and she wanted to make her own rune like Gandalf's. (You know the one he left on a rock on Weathertop?) It is great to read about you enjoying your work so much.

frates board in nyc - From: Long Day
Hello Jeremy. My name is Tom Driscoll. My wife, Stephanie Walls and I are secretary and president, respectively of the board of Frates. I've been enjoying your blog. I came upon it by chance when I googled "Puyo". Anyway, it's been very instructive to read about your exploits. We haven't been to Ecuador yet (we plan to visit later this year) so your descriptions have helped us understand the situation. Umberto is Stephanie's cousin. Steph and I are recently retired teachers so Umberto decided that, since we were no longer working, we should preside over the organization here. So, we are new to the enterprise. Part of the problem Umberto has had is running programs from such a distance. Codeama has taken over much of the administrative work and that has been a great help. We are hoping that you will be able to help too. We want to use the resources we can gather to do the most good and that is sometimes difficult to determine from here. Your imput will be very helpful. We've been thinking about helping the schools. Any specifics there would help. We also wonder if there are any programs to help bring clean water to the communities. Umberto has been after me to get SKYPE. If I finaaly do, maybe we can talk. Until then, keep writing. Tom

I'm sure you are working your tail off hard too... but I'm sure it's worth it! These kinds of experiences only come sometimes once in a lifetime so thank you for sharing your adventure with all of us! We just got back from Mexico and it was an excellent adventure too! WE had a blast and I want to go back so BAD!!! I wish I could send you some of my pics from Sierra Madre... It was unbelievable!!! Anyway, keep us posted and Best of Luck! Take Care, We Miss You! Hey Jeremy! Keep working at the language and don't get too frustrated! You have the upper-hand just being immersed into a country where it is spoken and you also have the benefit of the local exposure to the languages and their culture! You are quite lucky and trust in time... it will come! Especially the verb tenses... but before you know it... it will hopefully just click! Best of luck to both of you! Take Care! Paz!!

I can relate... maybe - From: The Jungle
Hey Jeremy! I just got back from Mexico yesterday and as I read your blog about the rainforest, I could only imagine how spectacular it must be. Me and the girls (Alex & Emily) took a tour of one part of Sierra Madre and it was amazing! The views, the plants and trees, the entire experience was wonderful! But I'm sure our 9 days can't and won't compare to 2 full years of this kind of adventure and excitement... Though I know you will have a lot of hard work to do, but I know you'll make the best of everything! I'm glad you are enjoying it for the most part. Take Care! Buena Suerte!!! :)

Missed your call - From: The Jungle
Jeremy, I spend 36 hours laying around being sick and you call in the 1 hour I was out at urgent care! Seriously, I am very sorry I missed your call. I have been faithfully checking your blog (and Susan's) and miss you guys a lot. It is great hear you are having a good experience. Things here are holding up well. I just performed the first maintenance on the truck. There was a loose switch in the turn signal system. It was actually kind of rewarding to diagnose and fix something without having to take it to the shop. Frisbee has been on again, off again due to the weather. Fun when we have done it. My trip to the cabin with the kids was a good one. The creek is high. Did some tree planting, replacing a couple of dead evergreens of various types (including the one in the row right in front of the cabin). Caulked the gutters on the deck side. Replaced the dehumidifier. Did some other basic stuff. After Bryan and dad fixed the leak V wanted to make a hatch for easier access. I made some plans I think will work so we can cover the hatche panel with ceiling tiles to make it look OK. I am going to go back down in a couple of weeks and get some more things done. Take care.

way to go both of you... - From: Back in Quito
Jer and Sue, I couldn't be more proud of you and the work and energy you both and the other volunteers, too, are doing there. I am so glad you have times of fun...we will not think about your poor tooth and the pain it caused you now as you are hopefully over it all, cause I know it was a terribly painful experience. I finally got around to reading all of your blogs, Jer, I will get to Sue on another day, and it is terribly interesting to read. Just stay healthy and safe, please. I will look forward to more of what you are doing. Love, AJ

Au Contraire bonjour! communisim is a perfect system, I have instilled it here at the casa de thomas, and all is working perfectly. Sarah and I each get a rice paddie the same size as the other, and we now share each others clothing too, I recommend trying to spread communism while you are down there, if nothing else it will make for very interesting blogs. just keep mentioning Che guevera down there and it should spread from that...good luck!

How about your surgery ??? - From: Questions Answered
Hi Jeremy, Happy to hear from you again.!!! Looks like your surgery went well. YOU must get a lot of mail from the students. I had some of the same questions... what you eat... Does the PC supply clothes and equipment you may need when in the jungle.. I assume you go back to a home base each day. I just can't picture my luggage should I embark on such a commitment. Hopefuly you did have imput on your living arrangements... Oh, I do keep you in my prayers that you may be safe and receive many blessings along the way. linda brown

Cultural Background! - From: Questions Answered
Way to go Jeremy! This was Hilarious! Thanks for filling our minds with such real life, real culture, and real adventure! Glad to know you are still fully dressing, don't think I could eat any of that stuff myself, I like to try and I value indigenous culture and food... and drinks for that matter... but I'm not sure my stomach would or my mind could, very interesting to know about the drainage around the equator - or lack of lol - and so many thanks for addressing the ever-burning question on the cultural issues de los prostitutos. Enjoy! Sounds like you are having the experiences of a lifetime and I'm sure you and your wife will last it through - hopefully without wigging out and running into the jungle wildly though! Godspeed with the dental drama! Savor the best of everything! O yeah... and I-O! No training for me... Pero, muy Buena Suerte con esto en Ecuador! Paz! Let me know how the Spanish et al are going! Adios! :)

Greg, yes, the area around Puyo is indigenous central in Ecuador. We are very excited about the opportunity. Living in a relatively large town/city and venturing out into the rainforest to work with the indigenous cultures combines the best of both worlds.

Care package on its way - From: PUYO it is
Jeremy, we got the letter from you and Sue yesterday. Elisa and I are putting together a care package which will hopefully get mailed out to you tomorrow. It includes some newspapers, Reese's cups, Twix bars and a couple of books. Glad to hear that things are going well for you. Cool to hear you are going to Puyo. You'll have to tell me if the morning mists are as cool as they are said to be. Now you can get Bryan to come visit you for sure. A couple of my outdoor/adventure friends have said Puyo has some awesome biking. That part of Ecuador was one of the least penetrated by the Spanish, so I understand that it still has a large indigenous population. (At least it did when I was still in college.) But you probably know all this and more already. I did haul out one of my old history books which has some pictures of Puyo. WOW! Take care.

Making me jealous - From: Back from the Rain Forest
Hey Jeremy, you're making me jealous. It really sounds like you are having a great experience. It's a wonder the whole country isn't overrun by druids! On the nursery thing, I think by the time you get back we'll need to hire a full time horticulturist just to tend our basement... I think we're headed to the cabin in two weeks, hopefully we will be able to find and fix the leak. Gotta get my "substitute Jeremy" butt in gear.
