I am a translator; I have much of spare time, and I devote most of it to travelling to various places. Most of all I like lakes, rivers, the sea, and mountains. I like to take pictures of natural landscapes and buildings.

February 2nd 2012

I decided to visit Tikhvin because of the same reason I went to Tver. I had a full day off. I bought the train tickets the day before departure. It takes about 3.5 hours to get there. I departed at 10 o’clock and returned at half past nine in the evening. By the way, now I’m staying in the very centre of St. Petersburg, in a small hotel. It’s so convenient. There is a metro station and a cinema right across the door, and some other important places for me. In 2009, as I spent much time in St. Petersburg, I visited several places near it. One of them was Vyborg. I bought a map that time and still have it here. There is the map of Tikhvin included and I got really interested to see ... read more

Sometimes I get so bored with life I simply cannot stand it, but still I have to get up, cook food, translate various texts, look through the window, think, breathe, put the rubber ring on my tooth, read books, think about home, would-be home, past, present, future, etc, drink tea, write to my friends and what not. It’s too damned boring when the person you think most of the time often does not pay attention to your calls and has so much work we can’t even meet for 11 days, living in the same city (I wish she was not ill, to crown it all). As soon as I had my day of rest, I understood that not to get completely bored I had to go somewhere and do something. Money matters do not allow now ... read more

‘Gde, gde – v Vologde!’*

Vologda is first mentioned in the chronicles as early as 1147. It’s a very old city. I decided to visit it after having a look at the map, being bored, and studying the area close to St. Petersburg. I’m now staying in St. Petersburg, if you didn’t know. To put it in a nutshell, Vologda is a city of churches and wooden buildings. Some of them are in excellent conditions and some require renovation. Vologda is all about churches and wooden buildings for me. I went there on a gloomy overcast day of September 30, taking a train from St. Petersburg, only a night’s trip of some 10-11 hours. The idea has settled in my mind to visit as many Russian cities and towns as I can before another ‘great’ trip abroad takes place. I have ... read more

Here are some new photos after my short trips to Pushkin, Lomonosov, Gatchina, and Zelenogorsk. Definitely those places are of much interest. Zelenogorsk I didn't see previously, so I can say that it's a wonderful place, looking like a resort. It's full of trees and greenery and has two interesting churches and generally the place is pleasing in all aspects. I have already written about Pushkin, Lomonosov and Gatchina. I had about 10 days off work in September and had nothing to do, so it was a good idea to revisit those places. In October I will go to some other interesting destinations near St. Petersburg. ... read more

Exiting

Exit 7-10 July 2011, Serbia Novi Sad It so happens that I mostly do not manage to write a complete story about a trip during or after it, and when it comes to the task I simply want to do away with it as quickly as possible. It is not that I do not like writing about trips. Let’s get, though, straight to the point. Exit Festival is, without any flattery, the best dance event I ever visited. There is little to relate since my 4 days were passed according to the same simple scheme: party – sleep – translate – eat – party etc. 7 July While staying in Beograde, I wanted to do some translation in the morning, but failed, slept until the checkout time. I walked to the bus station and bought a ... read more

I quarreled a bit with the girl just the day before leaving for Beograde. My spirits were very low. I did not want to go anywhere and to do anything. My train was leaving almost at midnight. The pleasant thing was my short walk on the Nevsky Prospect just before leaving. When I arrived to Moscow I felt still sleepy and gloomy due to the lack of sleep. I was falling asleep all the morning before the flight. We had very shaky landing in Beograde, due to the clouds, perhaps. I was getting more excited little by little. I arrived to Belgrade and took a city map at the information desk. It was necessary to take the bus to the city centre. I asked the bus driver for information, showing him the map and the required ... read more

11/06-13/06 I had a terrible time, working all days. It was getting too hard on me, I felt depressed and gloomy and tired, having not enough sleep. Work is good, but health is better. So I had to force myself to have some days off, and this magic opportunity was presented by the Club Perekhod who organized a 3-day boat trip to Ladoga. I paid the money, and was happy. I’m currently staying in St. Petersburg. It’s a very good chance to explore the vicinities. When I was younger we used to have a boat and I would row it almost every day for pleasure and for other affairs like crossing the river before the bridge was built. I’ve grown up near the river so I feel a natural link with different water bodies. 11.06 The ... read more

Put Your Hands Up For Moscow

They say that Moscow never sleeps. There is a popular Russian song “Ya lyublyu tebja, Moskvaaaa”. Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation, by the way. They also say that Moscow is not swayed by tears and that Moscow was not built in a day. I’ve never been for more than one day in Moscow. This is of course a city which needs no introduction and no advertising, so my story will be just an account of what and when I saw there, and my emotions. It’s too overwhelming and big a city for me to feel comfortable there. In St. Petersburg I feel much more comfortable and there were times when I felt St. Petersburg to be my second home. No doubt, I like Moscow’s sights, but generally the city looks very disordered, it ... read more

Birsk, My Hometown

March 5th 2011

A long time ago I thought about writing a short piece about my native town, Birsk. Strictly speaking, it will not be a travel blog, because one does not travel to one’s hometown, but I think somebody, somewhere, sometime might be interested to look at a simple, old, non-sightseeing town in the Russian province close to the Urals. As usual, I am not planning to provide information of factual character. I will perhaps try to show the best things available in Birsk, not so much its buildings, because there are few old of them, but maybe the natural landscapes surrounding it. I suppose that a person, if his intention is travelling, will not go to Birsk to see the sights (though the town has some interesting old buildings and churches), but to see the nature and ... read more

A Bit of St. Petersburg

Yesterday I had a lovely evening. Me and my girlfriend have decided on our relationship. Finally! I cannot describe how happy I am. There’s a life for us. I am simply going mad sometimes. Like a child in a fairytale land. This is what St. Petersburg brought into my life. Many hearty thanks. I’m drowning in lyricism and romantic ideas and expectations. I feel very incomplete about my blogs, there being no stories about St. Petersburg and Moscow. I have realized that I simply have to write something about Moscow, because a) it deserves it; b) I’ve been there many times, though always only within one day and on a way to some other place; c) some people might be interested to read my impressions about this city. Concerning St. Petersburg, it’s a different situation, because ... read more
