It was Sunday 5:00 a.m on the 25th of September. My flight to Vancouver was at 7:30 am.. ‘Enough time’ I said to myself.. How wrong I was… OMG… My train to the Newark airport from Metropark station was at 5:42 a.m. That unfortunately was the earliest train I could catch to get to the airport and the next one was an hour later at 6:42 a.m. So I need to catch the 5:42 train under any circumstances. ‘Enough time’ I repeated to myself…. Time was ticking . It was 5:25 and I was still at home giving a final rundown on the things I needed for my trip, watering the plants and ensuring the house was secure. 5:31 a.m , I slam shut the front door and run to my car. Oh yes, when running ... read more

March 4th 2009

On the third and final day of our adventurous trip to Konkan, Aai and Venumaushi made a plan to stop at Raigad en route back to Pune. In the morning just before breakfast, mom and I walked to the most famous temple in Diveagar called Suvarnaganesha Mandir. The history of Suvarnaganesh is indeed quite enthralling. It is said that a copper box was found one day at a farm. The box was all muddy and looked pretty ancient. It had some words written from the 10 century in Sanskrit. When the box was opened in presence of Govt Officials, there was a sculpture of Lord Ganesh made out of pure gold. Also the box contained ornaments belonging to Lord Ganesha. It was then that this scuplture was named “Suvarnaganesh”. However it’s still a puzzle as to ... read more

March 3rd 2009

The next morning, after a lovely breakfast of pohe, we left to go to see the famous fort of Janjira. We drove upto a small village of Dighi and took a boat to Rajpuri. From Rajpuri we had to take a small sail boat to the fort of Janjira. There were about 30 of us in this small dingy sailboat. As we set sail, the boat swayed big time due to the huge waves. Damn, I thought it would topple any moment and history of the incident in Bhugaon would repeat itself with a more intense flavor. The boatman tried to calm us by saying that it was always rocky initially and then it calms down as we head out into the sea. As we reached the gates of this magnificent fort, a thought came across ... read more

March 2nd 2009

In the wee hours of the morning of the 26th of Feb, 2009, there as a lot of hustle bustle in our house coz all the members of the house were about to embark on a 3 day trip to the Konkan. Mom was getting some food stuff ready and filling up a couple of empty bottles with drinking water. Mom's sister, Venumaushi, was getting ready, saying her daily morning prayers and at the same time hunting for her cap. That’s called multitasking. As for me, I had taken my leisure bath, gotten ready and was checking my emails for any last minute work related stuff as I wasn’t taking my laptop with me. (What do ya know ! No Laptop for three whole days. What a nightmare!!!!) 7:15 on the dot, our rental car arrived. ... read more

Wednesday morning, the 24th of December, a day before Christmas. I embarked onto the journey to Brussels. I, personally, was really looking forward to Brussels, the land of chocolates and WAFFLES… I didn’t have a good start tough. The train from Hilversum (where I was staying) to Amsterdam Central station had mechanical problems and stopped midway for a while. The result of which, as expected, I missed the connecting train to Brussels by 5 minutes. Sheesh…. But thankfully, there was another train shortly which I boarded and was off. Whew. Within 3 hours I reached Brussels. My commute misfortune didn’t end there Even though, as per the map, the Marriott hotel was located like 10 minutes walking distance from the Bruxelles Centraal station it took me about 30 minutes to reach the hotel because I went ... read more

Saturday, 20th December. Two weeks of grueling work accompanied by a bit of fun in Cologne finally came to an end and began a week of a much needed vacation. It was a mad rush early in the morning. After having a quick breakfast with Jonathan before he left to catch his flight back to South Africa, I had approximately 2 hours before my train to Amsterdam, Netherlands. Still had to do a final check of my luggage and most importantly I had to return the car to the rental agency which was at the station. Thankfully the Köln Hauptbahnhof was 5 minutes from the Marriott. An hour and a half later I parked the car at the allotted spot, returned the keys to the rental car and made a dash to the platform with the ... read more

December 21st 2008

I have been traveling overseas quite frequently in the past 3 years for official business and I didn’t ever think about blogging. But my friends have been forcing me to get out of my bohemian lifestyle and start blogging so I finally caved in and here I am with my first blog on my travel experiences. I must start by saying that the one thing I really like about traveling is that you learn different a lot; from cultures to language, food to cars. December has been very hectic with travel and work. On December 6th I left for Cologne or Köln, Germany I had been there during the same time last year but every trip is a learning experience. I was in a non-English speaking country and with my limited knowledge of German, I did ... read more
