CUSCO Initially we had planned to stay in Cusco for 3 wks to work at the Yanpany project and check out Maccu Piccu. After started the school, we both realized this was something worth giving more time to, so decided to stick about. Much to the annoyance of our travel agent (who had to yet again change our flights!) In the end we ended up there, just over two months and it was an unforgettable experience. We thought it best to collect the whole experience into one post, instead of dozens of posts which would have become boring very quickly. I know, it’s very long (skip over it if you want!) but the below details what we did, with who and where over that time. ACCOMMODATION We arrived in Cusco just before Christmas and were thankfully ... read more

Aldea Yanapaay Christmas Party at the school We arrived in Cusco the week before Christmas hoping to start work that week. Unfortunately this was not to be as the school finished with their Christmas party on the 23rd. We were invited to help out at this. Nothing could have prepared us for this! We were told that we would be helping to keep the kids under control which seemed like an easy task. However when the doors opened at 3pm hoards of children ascended to the rows of benches that had been put out in school 2. This is in a courtyard with a small garden near the toilets on one side and on the other side there are the 2 classrooms at the side then one large one at the back then a staircase ... read more

The frontier Bold Border formalities on the Bolivian and Peruvian side were quite quick and the only delay was due to the large number of people on our coach all there at the same time. The tour guide on the bus gave us a information in 4 different languages about the lake and peru. On arrival to Puno we were put in a taxi and taken to a hotel, paying slightly more for a little comfort (about 8 pounds a night for ensuite) cos the lack of toilet seats, running water and hot showers had started to wear us down a little and we also had wi-fi! We ventured out around tea time through the more touristy streets to the harbourside food kiosks/restaurants for more trucha. Puno is a larger town than Copacabama and has a ... read more

La Paz to Copacabana Having booked our bus ticket through a tour agency the day before, we woke at 7 ready for our pick up at 7:30. The 7:30 pick up was to be on Bolivian time. Having turned 8:30 and still no sign the night guy from our hostel came out and saw us still waiting so Sam went in and rung them. Luckily they answered and said that they would be on their way now. 20 minutes later and still no sign the agency now rung the hostel to say that we needed to get a taxi to them! We were greeted at the agency by another taxi and the woman who we booked with paying all the taxis! The next taxi then took us to the cemetary district and got us on ... read more

LA PAZ - THE BEST CITY IN THE WORLD? After a quite morning stumbling around the city with our packs, we crashed out in our first hostel for a few hours and then set out to explore the city. Thankfully, the nationwide ban of leaving your house on a sunday only applied in Paraguay and the main streets were buzzing. For the next few hours we wondered around the streets, sampling the local food, checking out the markets and trying to get our heads round the full scope of the world's highest city. La Paz's beauty is undescribable, it sits 3600 meters above sea level towering down on everything else. Cradled by mountains the city works it's way up to the peak, with expense and comfort buzzing in the centre and petering out as the ... read more

FIRST STEPS INTO BOLIVIA Our first flight took us from Asuncion to Santa Cruz, landing at 11:45pm. Despite all the forms we had to fill in on the flight and the number of guards around we passed swiftly through immigration and customs and got the last few seats to bed down for the night. After a very refreshing few hours sleep (!) and a 30 minute flight we landed in Cochabamba. We took the ‘mirco’ (bus) to the town centre and bus station to get on our 9am coach to Oruro, which left promptly and was pretty comfortable. The journey was amazing as the bus climbed through the hills on a surprisingly smooth road. We probably averaged about 40 mph the whole way but still managed to overtake a few trucks. This was far from ... read more

ASUNCION - DAY 1! After jumping into a taxi, we arrived at the bus station early hoping to pay our way onto a decent bus. The first one which seemed nice enough and the stickers on the side boasted AC and a DVD player to keep us happy for our 6hr journey. Something our Spanish translation books seemed to skip on was that in Paraguay AC doesn’t mean Air Conditioning instead that the windows open and DVD actually translates to large objects that stick out into the isle so you have something to bang your head on. It was also a bit of a shock that the previously quoted 6hrs was actually 9hr. Despite all this, the journey wasn’t too bad and went rather quick. We also got to take part in Paraguay’s world record attempt ... read more

CONCEPCION DAY 1 After a rough night’s sleep, in our grimmest lodgings so far we set out with the daughting task of crossing boarders overland. Thankfully it seems this can be done with $25, a Spanish to English Dictionary and a willing taxi driver. So after a quick stamp in Brazil and a not so quick one in Paraguay, we’d made it to our second country. The difference of a few hundred meters into each country was vast. Whilst Brazil boasted nice roads, bright shops and top of the range cars, a couple meters down the road was a completely different pictures, with market stalls, horse drawn carts and bump roads. Luckily we arrived at the bus station just in time to board the bus to Concepcion. I use the term bus in the loosest way, ... read more

I woke at 630 am the next day and left at 7 with Katie (Sam wasn’t feeling so hot, so decided have a rest day) in private car to Rio de Prata about an hour away from Bonito. The welcome site were some wooden clad buildings set in beautiful gardens where there were green parrots everywhere feeding on the bread and milk that had been put out for them. We got into our summer wet suits and got our snorkels then took a ride along a dirt road and then a 2km walk through forest to the ‘starter pool’ . The wet suits were good protection from the mosquitoes but got very hot as we walked the 2 km. The river Prata that we were to be snorkeling down had a natural current from the springs ... read more

The journey to Campo Grande was a little more eventful than was hoped. Our tickets had been arranged through the tour company, which saved us hassle in having to go to the bus station to get the tickets but we were given tickets which meant we had to change at a station an hour away. It was explained as being very straightforward and we did believe them until our bus left 10 mins late and we still seemed some distance away at 645 when we heard an almighty bang and the driver pulled over. We all got out after the driver to see the tyre completely shredded. There was no way we were to make our connection at 7pm now, but as Sam reminded me we were probably lucky to be alive! The driver and a ... read more
