Our travelling has been curtailed this spring, summer and fall because we purchased property last fall with a "teardown" house on it and have been working on our new house after tearing down the old one. It's been quite an experience, but we finally moved in November 4th. Today we expect the last of our new furniture to arrive for our bedroom, and then we have window coverings and interior decorating to complete. Mother visited us from Virginia for 2 weeks and "roughed it" until our furniture was delivered. She was here for the "move in" day and then Phil came to take her back to Va. and then halfway to Florida to meet Lois. We will move out via RV on December 5, heading to N.C. for RV maintenance and then to our winter location ... read more

We are back at Sunshine RV Resort after a 9 day cruise. Actually I'd count it as a 7 day cruise as we left Fort Lauderdale about 5 pm and left the ship on the 9th day at 8 am. Sneaky, isn't it? Advertise 9 days, and actually be "out there" for seven. Oh well! We boarded our bus on Thursday after dragging our luggage to the club house in driving rain. The wind was so hard that it actually stopped me from making headway as I tried to pull one suitcase at a time to the club house. I had taken garbage bags and ripped a hole in the bottom and slide it over the suitcases to protect them. Arriving at the club house people saw me coming and quickly got the door open so ... read more

Greetings to One and All, It seems like ages since I last blogged (maybe it was) but thought it may be time to catch up on our activity. We left Ohio October 17 after going to church and getting a slow start toward Marion, N.C. where we were going to have some RV work done. We stopped below Cincinnati, Ohio our first night and then meandered into Tom Johnson's Camping and RV Center in the early afternoon on Monday. We had our work done on Tuesday and on Wed Judy's brother and wife brought her mother to us so we could transport her to Fla and to the park model we bought for her. We got started after lunch and made two night stops before arriving here at Sunshine RV Resort, Lake Placid, Fla. It felt ... read more

I just had to blog! Last week Judy and I picked up Judy's mother just outside Charleston, WV where our sister-in-law was so nice to deliver her. Her mother knew we had been ballooning several times last year and said she would like to do that. We checked with Rick (the pilot and neighbor) and he said he would be willing to have her take a flight. So for the past year, or close to it, she has been waiting for her opportunity to be his oldest passenger. Friday was the magic day and the weather was hot and clear but a little windy. The festival in Marysville was underway and they expected 35 hot air balloons to be flying Friday evening. After putting everything together, and with the balloon on the ground, we waited for ... read more

This blog will be ongoing as we are winding down our travels so that we can spend some time with our kids and other friends in Ohio. I will add some things as we continue to have new experiences. The travel blog “Tripping Through the West” will officially end when we arrive at Sunshine RV Resort, our winter home. After that my blog may appear as interesting things happen such as our winter cruise in January, or other spontaneous excursions. But for now, let me continue on our current road trip comments. De Smet, South Dakota, or the “Little Town on the Prairie”, is the home of the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum. Remember her? If not, do you remember the books like “The Little House on the Prairie” or “On the Banks of Plum Creek” or ... read more

After driving 278 miles we arrived at Medora, N.D. in temps of high 70’s. Our RV park is neat and clean and we settled in with little problem. We traveled in some light sprinkles today while we saw significant storms to either side. We managed to “thread the needle” and squeaked thru without difficulty -- except once again having a filthy car and rig. We found that the town has a first class amphitheater where a stage play is put on each night during the summer. There are only 20 people in the troop but over 2500 people try out each year for an opportunity to be in the show. It is ranked one of the best nation wide and the best in the west. They also have (prior to the show) a fondue steak dinner ... read more

Decided to retreat west and see the Little Bighorn Battlefield Nat'l Monument. Took a few pictures, listened to two lectures, and watched a film. The battlefield is out in the country and there is not much excitement around the area, but we got to see it and get a feel for what happened. The visitors center is rather small with a few artifacts. They had a fire in the area a couple of years ago and what may have been devastating turned out to be a benefit, as suddenly they found bones and other things that gave more insight to what had taken place. Digs are still going on today and more artifacts are showing up with each dig. Just a few photos to show. A quick blog today.... read more

Sturgis, S.D.! The city known for the largest motorcycle rally in the world. This year is the 70th anniversary and the bikers will be coming in numbers. They expect to have between 300 to 500 thousand bikers for the rally. Cities for 100 miles around will be filled to capacity with bikers and their friends. When we left Custer, 75 miles away, they were gearing up for the event by sectioning off the middle of the downtown for places to park the bikers. Wall, S.D., about 90 miles away, was also planning on the population to double in the next week. The event of the year lasts for 10 days but the crowds will be here a week before and a week after to celebrate this 70th year. While I had always wanted to visit Sturgis ... read more

Arrived in Custer, S.D. to a lovely campground called Custer Gulch RV Resort. We were surprised to find that the sites looked to have almost a quarter acre and lots of nice space for picnics, lawn chairs, and extras like boats, bikes, 4 wheelers. The next day we decided to see Mt. Rushmore Nat’l Park and Crazy Horse Monument. It had been years since Bill had seen Mt. Rushmore and when he saw it memories flooded back from his first visit. It still looks great and is still impressive! When the sculptor Gutzon Borglum looked at the knobby, cracked face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of south Dakota, he saw a vision of four U.S. presidents carved into the mountain. In 1927, with the help of over 400 workers and several influential politicians Borglum ... read more

Arrived at Scottsbluff in the middle of the pm and got set up, ran out to the store, got things out to wipe down the RV, and prepared to grill outside. Can you guess what happened? We got our first heavy rain since we left Sunshine RV Resort in Lake Placid, Fla. the middle of April. How about that? We have been commenting on how fortunate we have been with weather. We have now had a thunderstorm and a short rain --- which came just after we had wiped down the RV to remove dust. It lasted a whole half hour at the most with drizzle, rain, heavy rain, and then drizzle. Then it was gone!!!!! And out I went to grill! It was to rain all night but if it did we didn't notice. In ... read more
