What better a way to celebrate turning 21 (again!) than a weekend in the Grand Hotel. We found a resonable deal and decided to tie it in with a trip to the Saigon Opera House too. Russ' birthday was on the Friday and his students had found out. One of them was also celebrating her birthday so a big birthday cake arrived which was quite a surprise. More of a surprise was seeing the way that 13 students can demolish said cake with teaspoons in a matter of minutes! After work we headed into the city and were relaxing in the luxury of our room with a wonderful view of the Bitexco Tower. Dinner was a bit of a splurge too! We had had our eyes on El Gaucho, an Argentine steak restaurant, for quite some ... read more

We often get quite complacent about ordinary places. Having grown up in the seaside town of Cleethorpes, I never really think about blogging wherever I go to see my family there. This time, with a new camera in hand, I thought I would give it a bit of praise. One thing which was certainly not praiseworthy was the weather! It was freezing cold and we frequently cowered away from the rain. Early may should be sunny and warm, but we had leaden skies, four degrees, threats of frost and driving horizontal rain! Not nice!! Even so, we try to get a bit of exercise as often as we can. We have our usual routes for a stroll. One of those is the seafront where we brace ourselves against the Easterly coastal breeze (or gale depending on ... read more

I never thought I would end up blogging about Barnsley! Every year fans of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club gather for the final game of the football season. This has become known as the Seagulls Flying Squad and this year's host club was Barnsley. Oh well, we shrugged off the disappointment and booked our flights back from Vietnam anyway. Now, most people would probably not think of Barnsley as a place for a weekend away, let alone an excuse to fly back from Canada, Malaysia or Vietnam. We were pleasantly surprised with what we saw, but horrified as the temperatures struggled to reach five degrees! Don't knock it. The Premier Inn is very well located and pretty cheap - unlike the bar next door. Still, when you buy a round for 10 or so people ... read more

We needed some sun! Living out in the sticks is fine but there's nowhere we can really go to enjoy the sun when it shines without attracting rather more attention than we want!! The solution - Vung Tau. This is the nearest beach resort town to Saigon and accessible by a hydrofoil in an hour and a half. Sadly they don't run late enough in the day for us to go straight from work so we took the bus instead. From Mien Dong bus station we headed out of town in a minibus at breakneck speed swerving in and out of the traffic all the way. It was breathtaking, nay, frightening, and our knuckles were certainly white for a lot of the time. We got there in two and a half hours but I would have ... read more

What could be better on a lazy Sunday than a trip to the zoo? We set off back to Dai Nam () because last time, the zoo was the one section that we missed out on. This time though, we had no students in tow! That made us the number one attraction for every group of other students in the park! Entry to Dai Nam seemed to have gone up a little since we last visited but 70,000 VND is still just a couple of pounds. The zoo then cost another 50,000 VND which, to us, isn't bad. If you went with a family of four and also went on a few of the amusement rides, it seems you can soon build up a figure that most Vietnamese families simply could not afford. At the entrance ... read more

After a hard couple of weeks back at work (!) we decided to head back into Saigon for a cultural weekend. Traffic was bad again on Friday evening but this time it was because of new toll booths which are less in number than the old ones. Great planning, that! Anyway, not too much to report but some very nice pictures for you to see. We went to the Revolutionary Museum which is not far from the Reunification Palace. In the gardens there are vintage cars, some old aircraft, a tank and a helicopter. Inside we found alot of interesting exhibits about Vietnamese life, its money and stamps, plus Ho Chi Minh's camera! It is worth a visit once you've done the major museums. The gardens are nice too, and often used for wedding photography. We ... read more

After leaving Melaka we had a bit of time to kill before going back to our friends' house in KL. We decided to stop off at a place called Alor Gaja because the guidebook suggested it was quite nice for a short visit. We drove straight through the middle of town before we realised we had passed it by so we made a u-turn and parked up near the main square. In the middle of the square is a huge dagger but there was no plaque or anything to tell us more about it and we have failed to find anything online either! Stalls had been set up for some kind of trade fair so we didn't even see the green lawns that are supposed to be on the square somewhere. Nearby are some nice traditional ... read more

Driving half the length of peninsula Malaysia is always going to take a long time. Luckily on Chinese New Year's Day the vast majority of people were already visiting relatives so we had a fairly clear run all the way - until we got South of Kuala Lumpur. Then the heavens opened, visibility was reduced to a minimum, the traffic started to crawl but still several drivers thought they could drive like idiots. Thankfully we avoided any trouble and never witnessed any accidents. After about 5 hours we reached Melaka, or the outskirts at least. Then the traffic ground to a halt! Eventually we parked up at a posh hotel to enquire about their rates (way beyond our budget!), left the car there and walked towards town to find some accommodation. We looked at several options ... read more

Just a few kilometres along the coast was the touristy town of Batu Ferringhi (BF). It took us a long time to find a hotel with a room for the three nights we wanted. Even the posh ones were full! Eventually we found the EQ Hotel which was nice enough at a reasonable price. It was very well located for the bars, restaurants and night market that draws most visitors to the town. After checking in we went for a drive along the twisting jungle roads of Western Penang. It was beautiful in places but a bit boring in others. Eventually we made our way to the village of Pantai Ache. There we had expected to get to the sands and see local fisherman at work. Never believe what your guidebook has to say about off-the-beaten-track ... read more

We set off nice and early (well, 9am!) and hoped to beat Kuala Lumpur's rush hour traffic. That proved to be in vain and it was about an hour and a half before we crawled beyond the city limits. The roads then opened up and we had a good run all the way up to Penang Island. On the way we stopped off at the Riverside services where we had a lovely view of, yes, you've guessed it, the river! You can get to Penang two ways from the mainland. There's the tedium of driving into Butterworth then getting the ferry across, or the quick way across the Penang Bridge, all 13km of it. We opted for speed and before long we were bumper to bumper on the outskirts of Georgetown. It wasn't too bad really ... read more
