cinderella? - From: Odesa - Pearl of the Black Sea
It's actually not cinderella but a monument to oranges that played a significant role in establishing Odessa as a city. In fact, these oranges were sent by local Odessa dwellers to Russian czar as a bribe, which resulted in large governmental investment in Odessa's construction :)

Hi, thanks for your blog. Have you any advice, comments or concerns about currency. I mean exchanges, how much US cash to take to exchange. What about Visa and debit cards, MasterCard and Travelers’ checks. I also plan to rent a car in Odessa to travel to Poltava. I am leaving New York next week. I would appreciate any help. Thanks again. Jeff J. California

Hi, glad the weather's getting better for you. Just a thought ..... your roundabut is the colours of the national flag and if you look at the map of Azerbaijan (with a bit of a squint and no glasses) and with a bit of imagination as well, I think the shape of the country looks a little like a head, albeit with rather a large nose pointing to the right and hair to the left (or should it be east and west?). Love to you both, Jacqui and Dave

It all seems very far away from Bogota though, where we find ourselves at the moment. Also, I would love to buy your house but fear that you want more than 10 quid for it. Monte Alegre - From: Amazon Adventure #2 - Santarem to Monte Alegre to Belem
There are rock paintings just outside Monte Alegre that may be more than 10,000 years old. Those paintings along with other evidence of early human habitation are contributing to a revision of theories on when the Amazon was settled. You were fortuate to get into the upper Panorama II. It was full when my wife and I got there and we found that our reservations were actually in the lower Panorama -- a miserable little cabin with leaky roof, a yardfull of rosters that crowed most of the night, no screens and many mosquitos and an air conditioner that kept flipping the circuit breaker. We put up with it for two nights then moved to a really basic hotel by the dock, as the upper Panorama was still full. Good thing we did as the boat we'd booked (and paid for) in Santarem showed up about six hours earlier than expected and we had to pack and move really fast to catch it. KST

In defense of turtles... They don't like to be suspended like that. I consider this turle abuse! And furthermore, they can be surprisingly fast. They may sit in one place for an hour, but just leave the room for 20 seconds... When you return you'll be confronted with the case of the missing turtles. Where did they go? So, let's give turtles a little respect!

Glad to see you paid homage to Luis' hometown! You must go back to Tucuman, maybe not so much for the sugar museum but definitely to spend some time in Tafi del Valle. It's gorgeous and perfect for ambling and wandering on a blue-sky day. The mountains look like they're covered in velvet and the views are worth a hike to see. On foot or on horseback, and the town is quite user-friendly, too! By the way, Vermont is a smallish state in the very northeast, part of New England, touching the Canadian border. :)

So you big up this "wine [that] was fabulous, but about 5 or 6 times what we would normally pay for a bottle" but don't tell us what the hell it is! Well I can afford £1.50/£1.80 so what is it? Oz Clarke says wonderfu things about the region, but doesn't specify what to drink, so it's up to you to recommend stuff. He does think it is a very up and coming area though, so maybe you should be buying some shares in a vineyard or two!! Cheers!

tenis - From: La Serena
tennis, or tenis in spanish, is chile's 2nd most popular sport after football/soccer. chile is the only country in latin america where tennis is not an elite sport but mostly middle class (and even poorer people play, since there are public courts here and there). chile won its first ever olympic gold medals at the 2004 athens games with tennis, winning gold and bronze in men's singles, then both medalists combined to also win the gold medal in men's doubles.

So was cutting wood and looking hot the only things required of the beer queen or does she have to cut wood and look hot while also drinking heavy. Because I think a true beer queen should be able to handle a large saw and lots of alchohol.

piscola - From: Valdivia - Beer, fish and, er, more beer!
great trip. i just wanted to say that it's common to have egg whites in chilean pisco sours. it's not necessary, but i've always preferred them with it. the preparation of the pisco sour is pretty much the same in both countries, but the pisco itself differs. i think chilean pisco is smoother and doesn't have such a strong taste. cheers@

yes, flexibility!! - From: Changing plans - back to Bariloche
The flexibility factor definitely plays a major part in how happy you end up on these trips....And it is the protagonist in many a story, right? It's sort of a luxury to be able to have that flexibility - look at it this way: be thankful that you aren't stuck in some office job and freaking out about getting back to work!!! Thus, you have your flexibility!

Ooooh your plush bus experiences are quite the opposite of most of mine! Wow, you really ended up in the middle of nowhere. I'm thinking right now how all this time we have been in the same country but soooooooo far away from each other. It's incredible how many middle of nowheres Argentina has, isn't it?!?! Hey, you guys are going to like Salta, I think...I just got here a couple of hours ago and it really is Salta la Linda! I'll give you some more feedback after I get to know it a bit. I'm just so happy to put away my ' ropa de abrigo' and walk around in my flip flops again!!! suerte, chicos!

....I was there..... - From: Robbie Williams!
Since I was there, I don't have to rely on what anyone (..people, fans press) says about Robbie Williams concerts in Arg (....at least the first, Saturday 14th).....In a word.....I witnessed the fact that not only his Spanish (which, after all, is not relevant at all....)left a lot to be desired, but the whole thing....It was not what I had been expecting for so long, it was not what all of us had expected....Perhaps "sudaka" people don't deserve a good performance, like the ones robbie Williams usually displays in Europe.

Russ, Your blog caught our eye as it was sited near ours in the 'recent journals' page. Can relate to your "hayfever". In Perth , Australia at the moment and our eyes & nose constantly running. The Spring pollen in well and truely active!! Looks like our photo tastes similar. Have a look at our blog. "MARANADE". Cheers, Mary & Adrian.
