Just letting you know I'm reading - From: Practice School
Hi, I just stumbled upon your blog and as it turns out I am leaving for Africa in a few months to teach math so I figured I would just read through your experience to prepare myself. Just curious, how old were you when you left? How much teaching experience did you have in English? Hope your time turned out well all and all (I'm assuming you're about done). Thanks, ~Andrea

thanks for your updates... - From: Harvest time
Hi Rosemary, my name is Stacey, I'm an education student in Canada and I've been reading your updates in Burkina with great interest.... I've been traveling through some of West Africa before, further south, and am thinking of returning in December after finishing school (happy graduation to me!). Mali and Burkina Faso are two countries I am dying to see, so I wanted to get some updates of daily life (I'm not a "hotel" traveler). Thank you for your stories!!! I look forward to the next one. p.s. the black worms don't sound so bad...did you ever have bushrat? It's actually quite yummy!

three-inch black worms - From: Harvest time
Is comparing the taste of food to wet caterpillars similar to the tastes like chicken comparison? To'o with black worms just tastes like wet cater pillars...the fries from the Banfora MacDonalds tastes like wet catapillars..."the cat" prefers large spiders because they taste like wet caterpillars...

"Amazing Race" - From: New school year; a dismal Ramadan
For the last two Sunday nights, our Amazing Race tv show, was in Burkina Faso..........one of their destinations to race to. I think they go next to Croatia.............but it was interesting that they happened to go to Burkina Faso. Like whoever heard of the place before you ended up there? Did you hear anything about it? Just curious. I'm sure it would have been over a month ago that they were actually there filming. Seems they also said it was one of the "rest locations" for the "racers". Have a wonderful Christmas.........wherever it takes you. Love, Aunt J

UPDATE: PC returns to Guinea - From: Peace Corps Guinea program officially suspended
Just to clarify, since this thread got abandoned, the Peace Corps did return to Guinea, albeit not til after mid-summer, 2007. The disruptions to the projects that PCVs were working on was pretty dramatic.. (which makes one wonder at what happens to those in-country projects when the PCVs return to the US, but I digress.) Conte eventually conceded and assigned a new Prime Minister. At first, it was believed that he was too close to Conte but, so far, he has proven a vast improvement, acting like an actual leader who actually cares about his country. Guinea still has a long road ahead of it, but thing are getting better... and the Peace Corps volunteers have returned to their villages, with a new batch expected in December. hello Rosemary! My name is chris cody and I have been checking out this blog of yours. I can't tell you how jealous I am. I have been studying west africa for a year now and I just get more and more interested. I found your blog while I was traveling in south america (and stuck in Peru because of striking transportation workers.) It just sounds awesome. I wish you the best of luck and hope to read more of your stories. CDC

Sounds like the village that you are in is pretty empty during the day Rosie? What else have you been doing, other than planting trees and hiking? When does school start up? Do you have to go on all of your traveling adventures alone, or do you usually meet up with someone and go together? Other than the bugs, which I'm not too fond of also, are there any other nasty things like unusually large snakes or rats, etc there? I love all of your blog entries! They are really exciting to read about. Glad to hear that you got my package! Hope you enjoyed it! Glad it made it really! :) Miss you cuz.~Jaim

"GREAT BLOGS" - From: End of the school year, BEPC Blanc, Loosing a neighbor
Hi Rosemary: There's no need to change anything about your blogs. All of it is wonderful. I don't have any specific questions to ask in that you're doing a great job as is.........so keep up the good work. How are the BUGS over there..........mosquitoes, lice, spiders, etc. Do they have any real troublesome ones besides those I mentioned? Not being a bug fan, that would no doubt be my major concern..........the creepy crawlies of the area. Otherwise, I really have no questions........in that your blogs are very interesting and informational just like they are. Take care and keep 'em coming!! Can you believe you're nearing your "PC year" already? Wow, how time does fly when you're having a good time, right? Love, Aunt J

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep your blogs coming. They are fabulous and a total pleasure to read. I have sent them to my sister, Mary, and to Debbie at the cottage...........and everyone has commented on how they love reading about your daily/weekly/monthly goings on over there. C'mon RAIN........for you!! Keep up your interesting writings, Rosemary, and sorry to hear about your neighbor/friend Jon.........what a bummer..............go Jon with your "PC future"!! And, last but not least HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROSEMARY!! Are you getting packages and mail alright now? Love, Aunt J

"c'mon rains" - From: Teaching, really!
Hi Rosemary: Keep up the interesting "journal writings". Love them. I've even shared them with others........they're so fascinating. I think I should've concentrated on being in the the PC when I was younger. What an awesome experience. Saw where those colorful plastic kettles (tea kettle looking things) are used for everything....but are plastic?? Did you visit the Sindu Peaks as yet, or take any Djembe classes? Fascinating!! Glad to hear this is a safer place, albeit the DUST!! I guess the 45km's north eliminated the greenery in Bobo, right? C'mon rains!! Have fun in Satiri and keep creating those memories each and every day just like you are. Glad to hear your mom's packages are REALLY MAKING IT NOW, TOO. Hugs always, Aunt J

New Years Eve Countdown - From: Trip to Sierra Leone
I haven't been to Freetown in a very long time, but from what I remember a good number people generally are in chuch for the 'countdown'. The parties begin after midnight. Then on New Year day there's a mass exodus to the beaches in the late morning.

care package - From: YOUR QUESTIONS
I gave Mom a bunch of MP3 cd's and a bunch of pictures taken this past summer (before and after you left). She mailed them sometime before Thanksgiving, so hopefully you will get them soon. Apparently she has to disguise everything she sends you to increase the chances of you recieving them. Mom could send you her 1985 cell phone if that would help you. She is still amazed that speed dial allows you to save entire numbers to a single button. I think I am number 4.

Hey Rose, I'm reading your blog for the first time, and so far (up to this date that is) it sounds amazing. You are a teacher now! That's so amazing! Are you going to have photos online at any point, do you think? Also, I was wondering if you would like me to start printing out these blogs and dating them and making them pretty. Is anyone doing that for you? If not, I definitly will. This should be a book some day! I would like to show this blog to my students, is such a cultural experience for me and of course for them! I miss you!!!! Talked to Carrie and Emily the other day, we always talk about how SWEET you are! A package for you is in the works, please tell me what you need! A long book perhaps? Supplies like tampons? tylenol? chocolate? I can make you MP3 cds as well. Let me know! -love, mel

the locals - From: Adapting
I have to admit, this is the kind of behavior I expected from the locals. You obviously are more wealthy than they are so they want something from you. That's why I am happy with being white trash so nobody will ask me for anything. By the way, does that "White person, give me a woman" actually work? I love how they refer to you as white person. What would happen if you yelled "hey black person!" in Detroit? You would probably not be greeted with a smile. Tell me more about this hippopotumus in your room.

Fote! - From: Adapting
At the time I didn't understand him, but now it all makes sense. Downtown at the Tiger game, an African American fellow who was apparently between careers yelled to me, "Give me some money!". I told him no. He replied with fote you, or go fote myself, or fote off, or something to that effect. I really had trouble understanding what he was saying. Now I know that he meant nothing hateful towards me and that he was just referring to me as a white person.
