We left beautiful dusty Djenne hoping to be reunited with our luggage sometime today - not sure what the plans are - but something will work out. We had to re-cross the Niger River again to continue onto Dogon country and we shared this experience with a lot of people still making their way home from the market. It appears that there is always a line up and quite a long wait to get across the river and we will do this many times in this trip. While waiting in line one 4 wheel drive vehicle pushed in front of everyone and a great scene developed as one of the guys that we are travelling with stood in front of this vehicle and wouldn't let them onto the ferry........this vehicle was trying to by pass lots ... read more

Djenne (pronounded Jenny) was the place that everyone was anticipating and we were anxious to get there - but the drive there and the l-o-n-g lunch break just seemed to drag the day out. We were nearly there and discovered that we have to cross the Niger River by ferry - and there was a line up of vehicles and people............but each trip across the river has been a real experience.......switch into African time and just enjoy.......we were soo close that we could see the town but we had to wait for our turn on the ferry and make our way through the barrage of trinket sellers......needless to say that we have purchased quite a few items and they all enjoy the opportunity to bargain with you. Djenne was founded in the 13th century and is ... read more

Our trip actually started on Christmas Day when we left Bamako (still minus luggage and particularly worrying - Michael's medicine) and drove to Segou. It is about 240km east of Bamako and sits on the Niger River - the trip took us most of the day - a good opportunity for our group to get to know each other. We stopped for Christmas lunch on the side of the road and had bread, goat and watermelon. Merry Christmas - we all commented that we usually had watermelon for Christmas at home. It was a really quiet spot and slowly the kids from the village started to come closer to us. The boys are a bit more adventurous than the girls and as they became more confident, they crept closer and helped finish off our lunch and ... read more

Firstly Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. We have not been in Mali for about 11 days - hard to keep up with the days and date....but we have power this am and hopefully internet later today so I will start at the beginning. We arrived in Bamako (capital of Mali) on 22nd December minus our luggage. The flights from Bangkok to Addis and then to Bamako made it a very long day - about 16 hours in the air, plus down time at airports and we lost about 11 hours in actual time. Thankfully we had a 20 hour stop over in Bangkok to catch up on some sleep otherwise I don't think I could have handled the lost luggage thing as well. I was only one of about 50 people who didn't ... read more

Hello everyone, Michael and I are off overseas again - we have already left home and are currently in Western Australia visiting with our girls. I say Western Australia loosely as we planned to catch up with the girls in Perth while they were on their R & R from their work in the Pilbra - but I am starting this blog from the beach at Monkey Mia. It has been a busy couple of days - we left Perth and spent our first night in Cervantes where the highlight of that area was The Pinnacles. The Pinnacles consist of thousands of limestone pinnacles ranging in size from up to 5 metres tall and 2 metres thick at the base. They were formed thousands of years ago when ancient plant roots formed a weak cementation of ... read more

I can't believe that we have only 2 weeks left of our 3 months here in HoiAn...our time has gone by soo quickly and I haven't really been keeping up with the blogs of our travels - so today I have decided to share with you all some comments about our life here. Friday night is much the same as any Friday night in Oz - there is a little bar/restaurant here where the expats gather for happy hour. My drink of choice has changed from wine to gin and tonic (2 for 34,000dong = A$2.20) - although I attend an English class that runs from 7.30pm to 9pm on Friday nights so Michael has to order me a drink just prior to 9pm to get the happy hour price....fortunately or unfortunately the staff continued to ... read more

Hi everyone.....just to let you know that we are still alive and well here in Vietnam. I have been very slack with my travel blogs but hope to catch up on things and get into a bit of a routine for the last 6 weeks here. We are currently in HoiAn - having just spent 3 weeks in Hanoi. The Hanoi trip was mainly for me to continue with my TESOL study and to complete some units while here in Vietnam. Along with 22 others from Australia and New Zealand we undertook a 5-day in-class component and then the next 2 weeks were taken up with lesson planning and actual teaching. I found it to be a rather stressful and exhausting experience but the end result is that I did manage to get through the units ... read more

Not sure where to start because when the rain and wind started here we had very little communication at all and a lot of 'word of mouth' that we weren't sure was reliable or not. Unfortunately for us we were out on a fishing trip on the river the night the first of the storms commenced. We would have made it back to dry land before the storm started but when we pulled up anchor and started the motor - the 'captain' discovered that a fishing net was wrapped around the rudder. It was now dark and we had been watching the lightening for some time - well some of us had been, because, as on all fishing trips, there was a certain amount of refreshments consumed as well. Our 'second mate' shared his home made ... read more

Sorry everybody, this blog is dated 28th September and a lot has happened in the last 10 days and just managing some time to catch up on things.......we are all fit and well but a little tired and worn out after all the cleaning up we have done here and there is still a lot more to do here......but for now enjoy this update and more to come........tks. Ros. I have a bit of spare time today because the storm that hit the Phillipines is heading our way and we have all been advised to stay close to our hotel for the day. Lifestart Foundation decided to close down for the day and I was all prepared for my first English lessons - but tomorrow is another day..... There is a small pottery industry about 5km ... read more

Hi everyone, one week down....weather has thrown everything at us......stinking hot and muggy (yes, just like the words to that famous song from the movie - Good Morning Vietnam) and continual rain - but the temperature has dropped to 25 degrees. I think I am becoming "more local" and an now only changing my clothes once a day as I couldn't keep up with the washing and more so the drying in this weather....haven't yet succumbed to taking my washing outside to be done even though it is only 10,000 for 1 lb - about A$0.80......quite expensive when you can get a pot of local beer for A$0.20...... We have done a couple of tourist things since being here - one the cooking course and the other a trip out to the My Son area. This ... read more
