Miles traveled today: 523 We rushed out of the hotel as fast as we could because of the big day we had ahead of us- Badlands National Park and Mount Rushmore. We arrived at the park a little before noon and I bought an eighty dollar annual pass to the National Parks while my mom, the lucky duck, bought a senior lifetime pass for ten dollars! We pulled off at the first parking area where there were several walking trails. I walked out in my flip-flops and quickly ran back to the car to put on hiking shoes to explore. There are no words that can give justice the beauty and grandeur of the place. We took hundreds (literally) of photos because as my mom said, “it’s hard not to when the place is so photogenic.” ... read more

Miles traveled today: 574 After a leisurely start from our hotel, we packed into the car with no plan other than to get in as many miles as possible. The heat, sun, and pure boredom made us take a midafternoon detour into a little town called La Crosse, Wisconsin. We didn’t expect much beyond a look out called Grandad Bluff found on Trip Advisor. When we tried to drive up to the Bluff, we found the road blocked. Not willing to give up, I changed into my running clothes and jogged the remaining mile and half up to the bluff, a total climb of about 600 feet. It took me a crazy twenty-three minutes to make it up such a short distance! (The descent went much faster.) The view from the bluff was nice and I ... read more

Miles today: 244 We got a quick start this morning and were in Chicago before noon. We parked at the hotel and walked to our food tour- a good mile and a half in thirty minutes! I was very proud to see my mom keep up with me through the city. We made it to the Ashekenaz Deli just in time to start the one and a half mile walking tour (something we should have thought of before walking to the tour!) At the Deli, we tried a Reuben made with pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and their Russian dressing which was made with mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, and beets on marble bread. (My mother remembers all the details, I had to ask her!) We enjoyed our hearty start and walked across the street to learn about the ... read more

Miles Today: 450 We had a better start today! We left at a quarter to 9 and drove until we got to Erie, Pennsylvania. There we stopped at Presque Isle State Park, a beautiful little peninsula jutting into lake Erie. There were beaches, woods, birds, monuments, and bike trails. Much to my surprise, my mom suggested that we rented a surrey together. It was quite a contraption. It was like being in a landlocked paddle boat- we could both pedal at our own speed and I had control of turning. We biked about 4 miles together, probably never hitting more than 6 or 7 miles per hour, but having a leisurely jaunt around the park. We saw lots of Canadian geese and commented on all of the other bikers going around the park. There were tricycles, ... read more

In a surprising turn of events, my much anticipated solo trip across the United States got a surprise partner- yesterday my mother said that she would come with me. Not surprising was the fact that we started out late today. It was almost noon by the time we were leaving the state of Maine. (Before we could leave, the cats needed to be taken care of.) But that was alright because today was a beautiful day for driving. Not too hot, not too sunny, and barely any rain. We drove all afternoon and arrived in Syracuse just in time for dinner. The lack of excitement gave me a chance to lay out the time line for the trip: * Thursday night- Syracuse, NY * Friday night- Toledo, OH * Saturday night- Chicago, IL * Sunday night- ... read more
