Kampala - From: The Pearl of Africa
1. I live in Kampala, and can`t believe that you didn`t like your stay there. Where did you, and what kind of people did you meet?? Kampala is vibrant, has a grest nightlife. People travel from Kigali and Nairobi to spend weekends there. 2. The people you saw preparing for circumcision in Mbale belong to the Bagisu tribe, not Sabiny. They carry out this ceremony every leap year

Merry Christmas - From: Kenya - Animals, Animals, Animals!
Hey you two, looks like things are going great with the exception of the wrong turn on the bike trip. I am sure the view at the top was worth it Laini. Your pictures are amazing, love the giraffe picture up close, so cute! Also the picture of the rhino sideways, would not want to get gored with that! The dung beetle puts workers to shame, little bugger. Glad to read all is well with you both otherwise and good to hear that you are eventually coming home. Sorry to say that the lotto is not coming through, I believe we are at the end of the money pot, have some tickets to check but they are not looking good. Lots of snow here for Christmas, so it will not be brown, which is nice, has been a little on the cold side though, oh well. Merry Christmas to both of you and Happy New Year. Travel safe and be well. Talk to you next year.

Three Little Birds - From: Kenya - Animals, Animals, Animals!
Hey guys, looks like yo're still truly enjoying your adventure, and with your Kenyan leg of the trip I can actually relate to many of the places for once! Your 'three little birds' are Black-faced Lovebirds, although they usually cross breed with the more common Fischer's Lovebirds, still remember seeing loads of them around Naivasha. Glad to see you'll be back before too long, Let us know if you still want to head up to the north of Kruger before the end of your trip and me and Rog will book it, and if you get the chance, go up to Malindi, really awesome little town to spend some time in. Enjoy and hope to see you both before too long!

Hey guys, I can hardly wait to compare stories. You are staying at a lot of the same places that I did. I stayed at the River Explorers campsite and did the river rafting in the Nile too. I was also hard core and had a blast. I also stayed at Lake Bunyonyi, that is where I did our gorilla trek. Two and a half hours of gruelling mountain trekking ( and you know how muddy and slippery it was!) but they were amazing and well worth the trek. Your gorilla pictures are awesome!!! Have fun in Kenya, we saw lots and lots of animals there. Merry Christmas Love Cindy

Fantastic Journey! - From: Rescued from the Township (and The Big 5 at Kruger)
Hello PnL! I have finally had the time to catch up on ALL the blogs! I have to say the journals and the pictures are absolutely amazing. It is definitely a trip of a lifetime. I have not been able to get Mom(Gladys to read all the blogs, hoefully on Wednesday, she'll be here in the evening), I know she'll enjoy the family photos. I had someone ask me when you are planning on returning, I was not sure. Do you have date? Kelly is in Lagos, Nigeria until the 13th of October, so if you are back in the area, i'll send you his email there. NB. It's dipping down to 2 degrees celcius on Friday here in Calgary. Unfortunately, winter is on it's way already. Maybe a lengthened stay is warranted?? Take care, safe travels and blog soon! Love Julie, Kelsea and Austin

Maybe that's why you are seeing so much wildlife? Take care of each other & wish I was there, Georgia

Hey Laini - great job on the blogging here (to both the authors ... I'm guessing there's some team work involved!). I've been following along on your travels from good old MRC with only a small amount of envy ;-) but this last post pushed that right over the top (partially due to the beautiful coastal pictures and possibly a little due to the winery/vineyard talk ...). Yummy Wines - From: Livin' it Up in the Western Cape - South Africa
Hey there! Thanks for the note. We didn't get to Two Oceans, but we may go back that way again yet. No ice wine (never gets cold enough), but we have sampled some lovely Late Harvest wines. They do very lovely "natural sweet wines" which are not as sweet as an ice wine, but are definitely not dry. Very lovely and cheap! Don't know when we will be back yet - hard to say as we still have so much we want to see - but our bank account will really dictate when we come home! Not sure if you get Stellekaya wines at home - but if so, definitely try one!!

Hey guys! Again, love the blog!! Its so cool to see all your pictures and read of your adventures. Summer in Calgary has been pleasant so far, not too hot and lots of thunder storms. I think we've had a storm every day in July. The last one was rough on our flowers but I think they'll pull through. Jadyn and I are off to Invermere/Kimberly for a week. Mandy is staying home to write a paper (sucks to be her). We're taking the trailer and staying at our friend's cabin near Invermere for 4 nights. Then we're going to Wasa lake to camp with our old neighbours for 3 nights. The weather is supposed to be great. My friend's have a boat, and I'm hoping to get Jadyn out on the tube. We went and got Jadyn's school uniforms the other day. Can't believe she's going to kindergarten! She's going to a TLC (Traditional Learning Centre, similar to Kelsea and Austin's) school and will wear a uniform. We'll send you some first day of school pictures (if I can see through the tears to take pictures!) Peter, so sorry to hear of your friend Lorne. Take care you guys, be safe! Love and hugs, KAth

Fuel prices - From: Leaving Mali For Burkina Faso
Gas in West Africa is not cheap, we figure it has been over a dollar a litre everywhere, but in Burkina it is a little higher, closer to two dollars a litre. But still, the motorbike takes less than a Jeep anyday!

Wonderful Memoirs - From: From The Gambia Back to Senegal
I am reminded of how documenting your journey like this will leave you with something that can bring back ALL of the memories of the trip, at any time in the future, long after the major highlights have faded. And Laini, I'm certain that it wasn't the Africans you were not interested in seeing in Georgetown, it was more the constant hard sell that you needed a break from. That it came from locals who apparently were black Africans had nothing to do with it. So Peter is white now? hahaha How many nationalities has he been on this trip so far? Love the sharing, keep it up!

now that i'm crying - From: From The Gambia Back to Senegal
It always amazes me how some people just ruin things for the rest no matter what country they are in, there is always one ass who just has to be that an ass and make peoples lives like there own , cause that is the whole problem they are not happy so lets make everyone unhappy. It seems to be there goal and somehow makes them feel superior but it only makes them an ass.I'm glad you showed them that not all " WHITE" people are this way!!!On a happier note I WANT TO GO TO THAT PARK and see all those animalswill you come get me and take me too PPPLLLEEEAAASSSEEE!!!!!!!!by the wat the plants are fine no need to fret about them take your time and enjoy Africa they are behaving themselves and have not fussed while you've been away they do miss you though. Hi Pete & Laini, Thanks again for your heart warming blog! After a very taxing day of Tax Season stress (excuse the pun) it was so encouraging to hear how you have embraced the people of Africa and that colour is not an issue. We are all people, our skin colour or language gives people a difference which makes life interesting. However, the reason you are treated with a cold reception is because they think all white people are the same. What a wonderful friendship you have established! Keep giving the love! Take care, Love Ruthie

Donkeys - From: Crossing the Border/River into Senegal
Yes it is true they will put the chase on the dog. Our neighbors have two full size donkeys and they are meant to chase coyotes away from the cows. I know from experience when we take the dog down to visit them if the dog enters their pen they will put the chase on her like nobody's business. Looks like you are both very relaxed and having a wonderful time. Travel safe. Jo

Rosso - From: Crossing the Border/River into Senegal
We had similar experiences at the Rosso border crossing. All sorts of guys approached us, one was even dressed as a fake policeman and asked for our passports. Others warned we would be arrested if we carry ougyas into Senegal. On the way back, as we got off the pirogue, we were hounded by a group of about 10 people (including policemen, real ones!) all screaming that we should hand over our passports. Rosso is indeed quite an unpleasant border crossing. On the way back we tried crossing at Diama but found there is no public transport on the mauritanian side. We liked St. Louis and its colonial crumbling buildings. The fishing village is indeed a very "smelly" but fascinating experience!

Hey Laini!! Loving following along with you on your trip!!! I too had a donkey experience when I was in Texas visiting my Dad, I was feeding a donkey some apples and my Dad's dog got too close and the donkey hee-hawed very loudly for about 30 seconds I have never seen a donkey go off like that before, if there wasn't a fence between the donkey and dogs I think he would have charged too!!

Keep it coming! - From: Waiting in Rabat
We always run to the computer when we see a message from you! I loved all the picutres. The hot urine sounds....interesting. I think Peter's commentary on the food was a little more appealing. It looks quite pretty there. I was anxious to hear what the weather is like - looks kindof like our spring temperatures judging by the way you are dressed. Also, is it expensive? Glad to hear you are getting by with your French. Amazing considering Peter is Mexican. We all miss you, everyone is fine here, same old day to day. Hugs and kisses

As for me, I am going to the Flames game tonight against the Coyotes, how cow town is that?? Not nearly as exciting but seeing Owen Nolan warming up is sufficient enough for me right now :) Take care and be safe! Bye for now. Sherry :P

Wow - From: Casablanca
It looks very cool. I checked it out on the internet, and it certainly is a huge city. I know it's not exactly hot there, but its -48 with windchill here today and the kids are home from school because it's too cold to go outside! The pictures look amazing. We hope you are both well and have some time to unwind and just enjoy things after the hustle bustle of getting there.

...take a couple of bikes to carry all that stuff! I remember arriving in Bankok, leisurely pedaling the streets looking for a guesthouse, while all the poor backpackers slogged on foot, looking all hot and sweaty...

Morocco stuff - From: Getting ready to go
Hello there - how are you? I have to confess I've been particularly slow to catch up and reply to your last E-mail - even by my standards! I have just about finished my own annual end of year update, but haven't sent it out yet. Basically, all is well, but I'll send you the full story in due course... BUT what I wanted to say is - I recently went to Morocco for work for 10 days, so I wanted to pass on a couple of tips. I went to Casablanca as well, which was ok, but it felt a bit non-descript to me, although the Hassan Mosque is worth a visit and I believe its the only Mosque in Morocco that you can go in as a non-muslim. I think for the 'real' Morocco, you need to get to Fez, for the touristy Morocco, you need to spend time in Marrakech and also I would recommend you visit a place called Essaouira on the coast. A really nice town, naturally photogenic and much more 'chilled' if you should, by some strange chance, want to do any shopping! ;o) Other than that, I haven't experienced too much of Africa myself yet. I was intending to get to Tanzania and do Ngorongoro Crater (which is good, but a little pricey, apparently), but it never happened this year. I would have a careful think whether you want to do Kenya with the current troubles, but I would recommend Tanzania, Madagascar, Zanzibar and Cape Town area, depending on your time.. Have a fab trip and I'll be following it with great interest! Take good care. Neil x
