Africa » Ethiopia » Oromia Region » Moyale April 17th 2012

While I don't expect to get much sympathy from my family and friends back home who are probably in work or studying readiung this while, I am off travelling. But I'm sure anyone who has done this journey will feel sorry for me given that I felt like s**t for most of it. I was up at 5.30 a.m. on the first day and caught a minibus from Dilla to Hagre Maryam, where I changed on to a bus to Moyale. This journey took about 10 hours. Moyale is a town split by the border between Ethiopia and Kenya. The only conceivable reason anyone would ever visit here is to cross the border by land. I got stamped out of Ethiopia and made my way over the border and applied for my Kenyan visa. This was ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Southern Nations Region » Dila April 15th 2012

The minibus from Awassa to Dilla took about 2 hours, but seemed a lot longer with it seeming to stop every 10 minutes loading people on and off. The conductor didn't seem to have a clue what he was doing and tried to charge me double, saying I had to pay for my bag. This had been tried on me before and after calling him a thief enough times he gave me the correct change back. Matt met me off the minibus in Dilla, where he is working for the Peace Corps. Dilla is a town of about 80,000 people and he is about the only faranji living there. He was certainly something of a local celebrity as everywhere we walked there were people shouting his name. It was Ethiopian Easter today, which, I am told, ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Southern Nations Region » Awasa April 13th 2012

I got a bus from Autobus Terra to Awassa, or so I thought. After about half an hour, they gave me some of my money back and said it was only going as far as Shashemene. The change in the landscape was very noticeable the further south we got. It began to look a lot more like the African savannah you would usually associate with Africa. It was really slow and 5 hours later, we arrived in Shashemene. I transferred to a minibus to Awassa easy enough, but it was night time when I arrived. I got a room at the Midre Genet hotel, which was possibly the best value room I had in Ethiopia. I got some amazing pizza at the Dolce Vita restaurant - apparently the owner has had a special pizza oven imported ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Addis Ababa Region » Addis Ababa April 12th 2012

In total, I had spent about 10 days in Addis, although half of this time I had spent being sick, the other taking a break from travelling altogether. Addis certainly isn’t a city over endowed with tourist attractions or things to do. It does have a certain character, which I’m not sure whether I really liked or not. On the one hand, the city is fairly filthy, particularly the area around the Mercato. This is supposed to be the biggest open market in Africa and the smells emanating from it would suggest that this might be true. It can also seem like that there are a couple of beggars on each corner, some amputees, some mothers with children, some down and out alcoholics. Then there is the hassle you get from the idiotic Rastas around the ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Addis Ababa Region » Addis Ababa April 10th 2012

After leaving Harar, which had us waking up at the ridiculous time of 3 a.m., but not actually going until 4 a.m., we arrived back in Addis Ababa about 10 hours later. I was looking forward to spending the weekend back in Addis, but unfortunately I spent it being sick and didn't end up doing a whole lot. As soon as I felt better, I decided to go out to visit the Wenchi Crater Lake. I took a minibus from Addis to Ambo, which was only 2 hours away. This was the quintessential Ethiopian minibus ride, with 4 people to 3 seats, a woman getting sick beside me, the windows being kept shut in spite of this, people seemingly unable to decide whether they were getting on or off the bus and doing both in the ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Harari Region » Harar April 3rd 2012

After leaving Berbera, we got back into Hargeisa early enough. I had a multi entry visa for Ethiopia, but Jack and Joris had to get new visas. Unfortunately the Ethiopian consulate was closed, so we had to spend another night in Hargeisa, which was fairly uneventful. The next morning the two lads got their visas easy enough and we found a car to take us to the border. We had hoped to reach Harar that evening but we got into Jijiga too late and had to spend the night there. It had only been 5 days, but it was good to be back in Ethiopia and the beers that night went down very well! The next morning we got a minibus to Harar. Harar is considered the 4th holiest Islamic city in the world. The old ... read more

Africa » Somalia » Somaliland » Berbera March 30th 2012

It was another early start today, as we wanted to visit the rock paintings in Laas Geel and get to Berbera by the afternoon. We took a bus down to the city centre and found where the cars were going to Berbera. For some reason, they have buses that provide local transport around Hargeisa, but to travel outside the city there are only shared taxis. A crowd of nearly 50 people gathered to see how the 3 white guys would get on, with everyone seeming to want to have their contribution. Half of them looked like they had been chewing chat since the night before. Chat is mildly narcotic leaf, that is chewed over the course of the day. It is fairly popular here in Somaliland and in parts of Ethiopia. We negotiated places in one ... read more

Africa » Somalia » Somaliland » Hargeisa March 28th 2012

First to explain, Somaliland is a separate state to Somalia and has been since the early 90s. It just has not been recognised by the international community yet. So, this trip was not some suicide mission into Mogadishu nor was I in search of any pirates. I had been told that it was safe to visit and quite interesting. As I wanted to visit Harar in the east of Ethiopia, I decided it wasn't that much more of an effort to get to Somaliland. From Jijiga, we got a minibus to the border town of Wajaale. There, we completed the formalities on the Ethiopian side, had our bags checked not-that-thoroughly and walked through the rope across the street that formed the border and into Somaliland. We got stamped in and had some camel for breakfast. We ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Somali Region » Jijiga March 27th 2012

The alarms were set for 4 a.m. to get the bus from Addis Ababa to Jijiga and we were in a taxi at 4.30 a.m., with our bus leaving at 5.30 a.m. This Selam Bus was the first proper coach I had taken in Ethiopia and was as good as the ones in Sudan. The road was also fairly good all along the way, which made reading possible and we even had a break for lunch. The scenery on the stretch from Harar to Jijiga was incredible, with lots of strange rock formations. This seemed to be a pretty poverty stricken area with a lot of people living in tents by the side of the road. It was about 5 p.m. when we pulled into Jijiga. We got a tuk-tuk to bring us to a hotel ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Addis Ababa Region » Addis Ababa March 22nd 2012

We were up before 6 o'clock to get the bus out of Lalibela, but unfortunately this wasn't early enough. We were hoping to get to Addis Ababa in one day and this wasn't a good start. We had to get a Land Cruiser to take us to Gashena, which meant we ended up catching the public bus. We got on this bus, which was to take us to Dessie. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the bus and it struggled to get out of 2nd gear. At Woldia, we had to change to a minibus to take us the rest of the way to Dessie. This minibus was a lot quicker, but it started to lash down rain and made driving conditions pretty difficult. This didn't deter our driver from overtaking vehicles as we drove on ... read more
