July 15th 2012

Even though I am now home, for the sake of completeness I thought I should write about my last few days in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. After arriving late Saturday night, I awoke on Sunday morning ready to explore, only to find that Zagreb is not the tourist friendly city of Croatia - nearly everything was shut or would shut early on Sunday, and the majority of museums and galleries are shut on Mondays. Pro tip: if you are coming to Zagreb, don't come on a Sunday or Monday. Not completely discouraged, I headed out to some museums and galleries close by to have a look before the full impact of a 35 degree day hit in a city far from a beach. As I write that I now can't remember what 35 degrees feels ... read more

Almost time to Split

By the time we got to Split I was a beginning to think that all of the towns on the Dalmatian coast was much the same - white walls, green shutters, red tiles and most importantly slippery white marble pavements of death. Little did I know the best town would be last! Although initially wary, as it is one of the biggest towns in Croatia and our arrival was in a commercial harbour flanked by the omnipresent cruise ships, Split turned out to be my favourite town on the Dalmatian coast. It is super old, having been originally built as a palace by the 51st Emperor of the Roman Empire, Diocletian (thanks Wikipeida!) in 305 for his retirement after all that exhausting ruling (the Roman Emperor way of retiring down the coast?). The town of Split ... read more

Hvar's this for an island

The puns are back! I know some of you must be very relieved that I got myself together before the trip ends. Another day, another island. After a 5:30am wake up call to get on the ferry that is. After the instant unignorable relaxing atmosphere of Korcula, Hvar was quite a shock. I guess I should have expected as much given that it is apparently the island that all the rich and famous go to. Croatia´s Gold Coast? In the 70s of course back when the Gold Coast was actually trendy. Not that the hotspot memo had got to our accomodation, me and one of the girls on the tour shared our own private apartment, that seemed like it could be straight from the South Coast, complete with unrenovated 70s decor. It was very clean though, ... read more

These next couple of entries will be quite photo heavy - mainly as not only are the locations really beautiful, but I did not do much at all. Although in the end I did enjoy Dubrovnik, I was quite relieved to move on to one of the islands, where the chances of masses of cruise ships was less of a possibility. After a lovely drive along a peninsula, we stopped at a town called Ston (I think), which appropriately had the largest continuous wall outside of China. Then it was more of a drive to a ferry, then 15 minutes later we were on Korcula, where immediately we felt much more relaxed. It was a small town where everything was in easy strolling distance and we were lucky enough to stay in private apartments in the ... read more

After another gut churning ride between Montenegro and Croatia, it was to Dubrovnik to begin what I am considering the home stretch of the holiday. Which is sad, but it turns out the Croation coast has quite the ability to cheer one up! But first, Dubrovnik. One of the bigger cities in Croatia, but still not that big, it was nice to arrive back in the country after the initial visit to the north a couple of weeks ago. Trying to be strategic in the heat, after our arrival we decided it would be best to do a walk on the city walls sooner rather than later. So at around midday after some ice cream morning tea, we dodged the cruise ship groups to get up on the city wall for a view of the old ... read more

Another early start later and we were on the bus leaving Sarajevo, heading to Montenegro. Specifically Ostrog Monastery. After a gut churning ride through some beautiful Bosnian countryside, with the driver both smoking a cigarette and talking on his mobile phone most of the way, we were dropped at the side of the road near the monastry, ready to take a mini bus up for a night of serenity. And getting to know our fellow travellers better, as we were staying in group dorms. Montenegro has been surprisingly stunning. Though I dont know why surprisingly because I did not really focus that much on researching the country before I came away. The landscape turned much more arid, but still very dramatic with mountains surrounding nearly everywhere we travelled. The monastery is known as having the preserved ... read more

To get to Sarajevo from Belgrade a 7 hour 6am bus trip was in order. I had gone far too long without an early start in my entire holiday, and the several 6am-ish starts i have had in the last few days have more than made up for this. The bus was very Balkan, with stops an unannoying every half hour or so. Then a ride on the public trolley bus to get to our Pension. Luckily the weather has been very mild in Bosnia & Herzegovina, a chilly 30 degrees most days, getting down to a freezing 15 degrees at night sometimes. Almost enough to get my cardigan back out! Sarajevo is a stunning city to drive into, with houses perched on hills surrounding a city in the bottom. A bit reminiscent of Hobart, except ... read more

After writing about Vukovar I can't think of an appropriate pun to use in the title of this entry! Any ideas for this and future country/city puns please let me know. When the Vukovar visit was over, we moved on the most appropriate activity for travellers sobered by recent history - a wine tasting! Actually two different wine tastings scheduled for the same day! Still on the Croatian side, we rolled up just before noon, ready to take the edge off the day. I should probably add now that as I write this, it has been at least 35 degrees every day for the last 7 days. There is talk of a storm this weekend, but who knows when this unseasonably early heatwave will end. We firstly viewed the wine cellars and learned about the history ... read more

June 22nd 2012

Just a quick entry about our visit to Vukovar, Croatia. We crossed into Serbia not long after and it felt strange putting Vukovar and Serbia together in one entry. After a fantastic dinner at our guide (Sonja)'s parents house, with homemade wild boar sausage and homemade rakija (the local brandy/schnapps), we temporarily left Croatia to head to Serbia. We nominated to do this via Vukovar, a town on the way to Serbia, without really knowing the significance of the town. However it all soon became apparent. Right on the border with Serbia, Vukovar suffered a 90 day seige by the Serbs where most of the town was completely destroyed. We visited the hospital which continued to function during this time, although it too was being bombed. They relocated all patients to the basement of the hospital, ... read more

After spending a fair chunk of time wishing the weather would be more summery, my wishes have finally come true! It has been nearly 35 every day for the last four or so days, which although makes sightseeing a little more challenging and the local food a little heavy, does make it feel like a summer holiday. After rendezvous-ing with my new group (who have a much different demographic, I am the second youngest!), there was one more day in Budapest. Given the weather, I carefully considered my options and decided on a trip to the edge of the city to some Roman ruins. This involved a simple change to a suburban train from a metro station. Well not so simple after all, as they were doing track work. So it was on to a packed ... read more
