The individual defines their own version of contentment, and they have to get off their lazy ass to look for it, wherever it may be. Satisfaction can never be found and the world is congested with whiners on the opposite side of the spectrum. My version of contentment (ignorance?) is multidimensional... I'm content today filling my little brain up everyday with endless knowledge on the paleoenvironments of the world 3 billion years ago, cuddling and chatting with my sisters and friends, reading fun books about genetics & anthropology, eating strawberry yogurt cups, sleeping in my comfy sleeping sac, playing in the forest, and knowing that when I get cold I can run to my apartment where the freezing weather can't get me. Is this my ideal situation? No. But am I content? Yes. Someday I will be able to do my own field work in the middle of the Arctic or Rainforest, reading the earth systems myself. I will be bathing in the nearby river. I will be cuddling up with my children in my solar powered (or hopefully by then there will be improved technology) homestead (we will move seasonally or annually, depending on our environmental demands) and feeding them nutritious foods. We will go out in the day to learn the ways I was taught by my Mother and Grandmother and in the nights I will read to them to teach them the ways others were schooled. My current and future "successful" life includes love, compassion, and furthering my limits. Stop laughing Joseph!! Jerkoid. |

It is rediculous. (If you meant the other way around then you should come spend some time in Salta). And as far as North American visitors looking down their noses at each other I totally know what you mean in that respect too and find myself aften doing it! I like to try for an entirely local experience in Bolivia and Argentina and often stick strictly to the local places in terms of nightlife.. As in, I avoid the "gringo bars" at all costs and have kinda found myself often jaded by the whole tourist backpacker scene. I liked your last blog as well Mark. Itīs funny how we start to notice these subtle changes in ourselves and how drastic changes of environment and uncertainty has a way of forging some of the most deep-rooted certainties within ourselves. Thanks for the tip about that website Mark! Wow, it looks like quitew the project and I would love to see what I can contribute to it! And though I am soon on my way out of Argentina I have no doubt that I will be back sooner than even I think. There is indeed more than just a thin line between purity and incredible poverty.. and I think that in retrospect it was not the proper word to use in describing the impovershed, mostly indigenous, situation here - or elsewhere in the world. I do not think that it is necessarily the poverty that I am trying to highlight or romanticize, but the natural indigenous way of life that seems to be so far from the inherent consumer culture that we come from in the west. These people are no more ĻpureĻ, in the true sense of the word, as individuals than are you or I - but speaking of these people as a whole is to speak of their way of life.. And so when we are left to compare societal contrasts one cannot help but feel like so many aspects of this old way of life are far more natural. In my own country, especially the northern-most regions of Canada near Alasksa (where I now live), I have been given a first hand look at how indigenous societies are forced to integrate into a western consumer culture and by doing so have developed not only a huge sense of loss toward their old way of life (while struggling to hang on to it) but along with it a whole range of social problems that has destroyed the very fabric of what made them who they are. A sense of loss and guilt. What is nice to see here is that many of these people (especially in Bolivia and Peru) have not yet been completely forced to abandon their ways and integrate into a western culture simply because of the economic situations of their country. In this way I wonder if it is fair to say that poverty should be romanticised to a degree? .. I appreciate your comments on my blogs... Joseph Sieben |
