Our second stop on our tour of National Parks was at Bryce Canyon National Park. At this time of year the weather is still very cold at this elevation (8,000-9,000ft.) so many of the good hikes were not open. But we did the Navajo loop that I would highly recommend. Bryce is full of rock formations called Hoodoos. One of the most famous is Thor's Hammer and you can get a much better view of the Hammer by walking down on the Navajo loop. You can walk through Wall Street, a nice slot canyon.... read more

So, the first stop in our tour of southern Utah and northern Arizona was Zion National Park. On the first day we took in the main canyon and on the second we did a full day hike in Kolob Canyon. The 13-mile hike through Kolob Canyon to the Kolob Arch is a highlight that not many people get to experience. We stayed at the Best Western in Springdale that is just outside the park. Very nice hotel, convenient, with great views (and we snuck in on the winter rates by one day). On day 1 we started with the Sandy Beach trail that was a little traveled out and back trail in the main canyon. The payoff was a nice view at the turn around point. The hike took us less than 2 hours. Later we ... read more

In August of 2004 I visited Kauai and I wanted to do the Kalalau Trail after hearing about it from friends and reading that it was one of the best coastal hikes in the world. Well, in short it is amazing! Most guidebooks typically recommend 3-5 days to do the trail. Well, I don't listen well--I had it in my mind that I would do it all in one day--11 miles out and 11 miles back. But, it is not really the distance that is so daunting but the fact that the trail narrows so much in places and is exposed on the cliffs. And after a number of good rains and washouts it can present some nerve-racking sections. So, I stayed in the beautiful little town of Hanalei and drove over to the trail head ... read more

In July of 2006 I was lucky enough to be able to go Melbourne, Queensland, and Tasmania (another entry). Melbourne is now one of my favorite cities. I just loved running down by the Yarra River and exploring around town. It was nice to also see another former Olympic site. While there I also took in the Great Ocean Road for a day--a trip I won't forget. If you get the chance to see it please go! Then it was off to Queensland with Cairns as a base. I was able to go snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, take in many waterfalls inland at the Atherton tableland area, and also drove north from Cairns until the road ended in the Daintree Rain Forest. There I was lucky enough to spot a casowary when out hiking--a ... read more

Umstead State Park is an oasis of nature sitting on the edge of Raleigh. It is a large, wooded park that is large enough to host an annual marathon and also a 100 mile race. It has been my running home for the last four years. There are both wide roads covered by a finely crushed rock surface and single-track trails winding through the park. The park itself is great for running, biking, or walking. During the fall the colors are vibrant. There are also helpful trail maps at the ... read more

Date of Trip: April, 2005 My friend/colleague Li and I went to Montreal for work on this trip and had just a couple extra days to also visit. Glad we did because Montreal was nice but Quebec City was even better. Quebec City The journey by car from Montreal to Quebec City was a long road lined with snow and moose warning signs. Entering Quebec City seemed like nothing special until we arrived at the historical city center where we stayed. I think the best part of Quebec City is walking through the streets as they are unique and filled with interesting shops and many restaurants. There is definitely a European feel to the place. I also enjoyed running down around the St. Lawrence Seaway with great views of the Chateau Frontenac. I don't remember seeing ... read more

Date of trip: July 2002 So, after finishing grad school I had yet to travel outside the U.S. (except for Canada) so why not start with Peru. What could beat a 4 day hike to Machu Picchu! Cuzco and Sacred Valley Cuzco was the capital of the Incan Empire and it is also one of the highest cities in the world sitting at nearly 11,000ft. Just climbing to the edge of the city is a challenge. At the top you eventually get to Sacsayhuaman that was the ancient fortress that watched over the city. The nearby Sacred Valley was a great place to explore--unfortunately, I don't have all of my pictures of that area. There were protests in Cuzco just before we came to Peru and one morning the plaza was filled with army trucks full ... read more

Date of trip: November, 2007. Had the opportunity to spend a day hiking in Smokey Mountain National Park over the weekend. I covered trails in the Deep Creek area just outside of Bryson City. I would highly recommend this hike--especially when the leaves are changing. I would also recommend Bryson City over the nearby Cherokee area. This was the second time I've gone through Cherokee and it is a tourist trap nightmare with bumper to bumper traffic. Bryson City is much more quaint with room to breathe.... read more
