Thursday 3.12.2009 Day 50 Kelso We woke up to it snowing out our window. It was sooo nice. We did not let the snow stop us from going out and exploring. We went to the town of Rutherford and Kelso and saw the Floors castle. The castle was originally built for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe, in 1721. The site for the building of Floors Castle is a natural terrace overlooking the River Tweed and facing the Cheviot Hills, the heartland of the family's Estate. It lies on the opposite river bank to Roxburgh Castle, once the strongest fortress along the former march with England. In 1721, William Adam was commissioned by the 1st Duke to make additions to the eastern end of an existing tower-house to create a plain, but symmetrical, Georgian country house. The ... read more

It is one of two cathedrals that has its own police (the other being the Swiss Guard off the Vatican). The Minister and the inner city are inside a wall that surrounds the city. York has more miles of intact city walls than anywhere else in England, and some sections of the walls date back to Roman times. We then drove to Scotland just before we got to the border it started to snow and as we got to the boarder there was lots of snow even on the boarder sign. Thursday 26.11.2009 Day 43 Cardiff After raining for days, the weather got worse today with hail storms. We drove to Cardiff - and saw a pile up on the motorway caused by the large amount of hail on the motorway. We visited Llandaff Cathedral, building of which was started in 1120 and continued in stages for a few centuries! It was not a beautiful cathedral, but rather austere and piecemeal inside. It was full of little shrines and chapels to the rich and powerful over the centuries - these people were obviously closer to god than most. It did also house the memorial chapel of the Welsh Regiment, with battle damaged regimental flags giving evidence to the ferocity of past wars. Due to the terrible weather4 we did not get to see much else except when ... read more

Wednesday 25.11.2009 Day 42 Carmarthen After a great home cooked bfast we down loaded our pic’s and updated our blog while doing this we saw a squirrel on the fence outside our lodge. We went and explored Carmarthen, which is the oldest town in Wales - the Romans established a walled town here in 43 AD. Before that it was a Celtic tribal capital. The area is also said to the birth place of the wizard Merlin and nearby Llyn y Fan the home of the Lady of the Lake. It was also the site of the first Welsh Assembly before annexation (called the Act of Union) by England. Carmarthen also has the high percentage of Welsh language speakers in all of Wales. It is in fact the birth place of the Welsh nation. Such ... read more
