Lions and friends - From: Safari Part II
Well glad to hear that you made it back from the latest safari. Lions, elephants and rhino oh my. The animals you saw sound amazing. We will all just have to wait to see the pics when you return. We are just spoiled from the past when we had stories and pics. Do not waste precious time uploading them. I bet you were surprised to see Mike there. Somehow I thought he'd figure a way to hook up with you even if for a brief time. Glad you all got the chance to see each other and share your ventures and visit with one another for a while. Enjoy Zanzibar...happy and safe travels to all of you. Until next time Lucille

Hi E & S I've followed your journey on google earth. You're covering a lot of ground. Your adventures sound terrific. You're really "roughing" it with luxurious hotel and safari accomodations (hehe). Looks like you could see Zanzibar from your hotel at Dar es Salaam. It all looks fascinating. It's always good to hear from you. Your aunt Lisa asks me every day if I've heard from you and Gabrielle. I'll print your blog and bring it to her. Enjoy your adventure ! Love you Dad

As much as I am NOT the outdoorsy type I so wish I was there. To see that wildlife up close must be breathtaking. I would say my favorite would probably be the lions. This trip of yours has always been a dream of mine. Though I could definitely pass on the bugs and any other LONG and slimey things (you know what I mean). Eric if you really are with Mike (never know when you are joking) PLEASE do not let him have your camera!!!!! I have to see those photos. Look forwarding to hear more stay HEALTHY, safe and happy. Love Aunty Donna, Michelle & Nick too. P.S. Have to say I love the way the two of you blog. Wish there were more-it is a guarantee laugh for a day.

Surfing and bottle stacking. - From: All that goes on in a week on the road
As for the bottle stacking, it seemed to be some natural born talent. replication should be a breeze! As for surfing on the east coat...with a super thick wet suit, a hood, gloves, and booties i think it can be done in RI. At least thats what my sister tells me. Having me brave those frigid waters though will take a lot of convincing!

Greetings from the Brooks - From: Good Morning Ho Chi Minh City
Dear Mike, Eric, Kristin, Christina, and 'fellow travelers'-- Following all of your trips has been fascinating and educational. I truly feel as if I've learned so much about the world that I would never uncover on my own. Not only are your individual exploits interesting, but your connections, both through meeting up and through discussions of shared experiences, add an incredible depth to the experience. You can't imagine how exciting it is for me that four teachers from my school are out there experiencing the world in ways that most of us will never be brave enough to try. When we say that we like to have teachers who bring different experience and backgrounds to a school, we don't realize what the potential really is. What you're doing this summer adds such an amazing dimension to our community!

Really Eric your blogs are the best. Whenever you decide to stop these summer experiences, what will we all read. While I get to stay in the same spot every summer I at least get to try and feel your good times as I read. Your little cousin made it home safely from her Ireland experience. A couple of pounds heavier from her Guinnesses she had daily over there. But she did have a great time and now she has to focus on her college life. And Nick gets up every day at 5:30 and goes running to get in shape for soccer can you believe that. Well anyway glad to hear that you are safe and sound (though your diving stories make me a little nervous) and enjoying every bit of your trip. Looking forward to see you, Gabrielle and Tristan all safely back in the great USA and hearing more stories. Love Aunty Donna, Mich and Nick

Now with gabrielle home and another moving experience it looks like it will be September before I can get out there. I've been invited to speak at the Second life Community Conference in Tampa the weekend of Sept 5-6-7. It will be a good take as well as a chance to travel a bit. Lisa and I had lunch with Stephanie last Wednesday and caught up on all the happenings with her. I'm very glad to see good things happening. Hi there, it's Suze. I can relate to not ever knowing what sunscreen is too....another Italian here (Lentine) who never burns and tanned my fool head off for most of my life. It caught up with me finally, in an unfortunate medical way and I've learned a hard lesson. So poor Eric gets to hear my "sunscreen preaching" all too often. Dad...A bit too long? - From: The Ninh Binh Motorcross!
This entry was rather long winded. I stayed at the hotel while T&G went off for a while today. The Vietnamese food got to me. Right after they left I went to go lie down and found the lock on our door broken. It was over 2 hours later before I could get in and had to pass the time somehow!

Sounds like you're keeping things exciting! It's a bit strange to just be a reader of the blogs now, I miss writing them. 'Hi' to Gabrielle and Tristan for me- and i can so picture the scene where Tristan's bike takes off and G's standing there saying "yeah i was supposed to get on that". I also think you've been waiting along time to have that kind of showdown you had with the toothless shed owner. And BTW the check came the day I left for RI, but i didn't open it to see if it's the full amount ;). Will be back in town on Sunday and will post some of our pics on the blog (for all of you that are eager see the first part of our journey). love, S

Sarcasm.... - From: What a strange 24 hours!
Oh I got it, not to worry. I completely ignore any such advice, but I get it. Funny, people here(vietnam and the whole of SE Asia) wear long sleeves when in the sun and use excessive amounts of skin whitening cream and make-up to make themselves look as light skinned as possible. Dark, tan skin is for farmers and people that work outside, the lower class. The 20-something men are particularly feminine. They grow there nails long and have totally feminine hair cuts(by western standards), also a status symbol. The long nails signifies that you don't work with your hands. Some even wear nail polish and I'm pretty sure they were hetero.

Marie & Madison...glad you could come - From: What a strange 24 hours!
I have to say that getting the occasional message from home makes it seem a lot closer than it is. I wish I was able to put more pictures up and capture the skells and tastes of the places to share. Photos and words hardly do justice to the amazing people and beautiful places. It is never too late!! I have saw soooooo many families traveling in Bali, even with infants!. I don't doubt that there would be a few more challenges along the way though. I always thought I would do all my traveling before having a family, but if I can afford it, I don't think I'll ever stop. The Balinese and Indonesians were particularly open to various religions, relationships and people as well.

Sunscreen Part 2 - From: What a strange 24 hours!
Well, duh. Yes, lack of adequate health care results in people being sick and perhaps dying when they could be treated/cured. I'd agree with the Indonesians on that point. However, proper and adequate health care also involves education on preventative measures for staying healthy, of which wearing sunscreen is one. Therefore, Meester Paci.....I will remind you that 1.) you have beyond adequate health care and it's accompanying education and 2.) you are not Indonesian. I rest my case.

Do we have to go over the sunscreen thing again, Eric?? As I can see, you've been bad boy. Ok, I'll stop right there and get off the soapbox now :) It's great that you have so many choices for the next leg of your trip.....I'm sure any of them will be wonderful experiences for you. Komodo sounds the most intriguing to me, especially since it's still mating season for the K-dragons. You might even get to see the mating and territorial fights going on right now...could be a bit gruesome, but kind of cool, no? Stay safe and well and have more fun! Suze

are you going to the moon? - From: What a strange 24 hours!
Perhaps a strange comment title but I'll explain. I have been sharing your travels with Sully and pulling up maps to help illustrate what world travel means. He continually asks "is he still traveling? where is he going now?" and so on. I asked him if he wanted to say something to you and thus the comment about the moon. Not nearly as profound as what you have been sharing, but indeed a legitimate question from an almost 3 year old. We all have been enjoying "traveling" with you and it certainly stirs some wonderlust in us. Our adventures here as new business owners is both interesting and exhausting in its own way. We are taking a big jump here in a couple of weeks when Sandi emancipates herself from the corporate world so we can both fully wrap our arms around THe Family Tree. Looking forward to your continuing saga. I miss you my brutha! peace, z

To be honest, that hotel was no joke. It was expensive by US standards, worth every penny of it. Ok...maybe not every penny, but the looks on their faces surely was. For the record, it was 5 stars, although I would have given it at least a 6! You clearly know me too well. I didn't go with them cuz I figured they needed to experience it for themselves and didn't need a know it all with them. I can't wait 'til our first "meeting"! BTW...there are no rules regarding school placement and positions on the board so don't be discouraged!

Sweating my ........ off - From: What a strange 24 hours!
Dude, last year my sis got so sick of hearing that. It is just too true. So nice in Indo. Warm during the day, pleasant in the evening, perfect! Here....so muggy it is disgusting. 160mil....that is rediculous. I knew I shoulda kept playing! They are headed home on the 11th. That gives us 10 days to head down the coast. After that the sky is the limit(no pun intended). Maybe the Mekong Delta, Kalimantan, back to Lombok or Legian in Bali. The last twl I would be able to stay with 'friends' so I might do that. Diving in Lombok or surfing in Legian. What a tough choice. Then again there is always Thailand, Kristin and crew will be back there by then. I don't think it will be worth going to sumatra as I will have to head back to Bali just as I got going. Komodo is still a real possibility too. 5 days by boat there which gives me 2 days on either end to get myself to Bali and back at the end. What do you think? so glad to hear about the camera....no really, i am ;)

I have to say that picture of the three of you is classic. I am going to frame it and put it on my desk (or rolling cart as the case may be). There you are in what looks to be a five star hotel, (which you probably paid no more than $15 for) and Kristin and Christina have this look of "WTF" have we been staying... priceless really. Couldn't you have throne them a bone. I mean really. Anyhoo, I am sure you had a sit down and told them whats, what. Then again, it's probably best I didn't shout out - I often embarass myself by greeting people I *think* I know, when in fact, they are total strangers. Hmm. Batur - From: Twice in one day?!?
Thereīs a great hotel right on the crater rim with fantastic views and excellent food (back then). Almitra and I got lost on the way down from the volcano. We met a barefoot chap carrying a box filled with coca cola. He appeared from the mist almost magically and said, īīyou lose for the pathīī, then led us back down. Almitra and I have used that phrase ever since, in many contexts, including our own! Remember guys: - on Batur, donīt lose for the path! mike

I really think PBS should do a documentary called "How Many Brooks Teachers Does it Take to Cover the World?" It would be a big hit and probably start a major trend in the world of teaching.

You have arrived!!! - From: Arrival in Ubud/Local Transvestite Sighting
Well, I am glad to hear that you arrived safely after your delay. Glad to hear that things are finally getting better for the both of you. I'm sure you were aware that things like the start do happen. It will only make you both more adventurous I'm sure. As for Eric and his words of the children, anyone who knows him knows that he does at times exaggerate a bit... right. We also know that he does really like children. Stephanie love your writings, very insightfulness is amazing for those of us following along with the two of you. Love the great photo of the two of you on your picnic. Contnued wonderful ventures and safe travels. I will continue to follow along with you two through this journey. Enjoy!!!!!! Lucille

Site works well - From: Arrival in Ubud/Local Transvestite Sighting
This blog site is working really well. Maps are great, pictures look terrific and your writing is magnificent. Eric's "brash" yet adventurous style is well complemented by Stephanie's softer and more detailed descriptive renderings. On a side note .. Mark spent the entire weekend with us and we really enjoyed him. Golf on Friday, cookout on Saturday and dined out on Sunday. Needless to say the food intake was superfluous and it will take 2 weeks of running to get rid of the excess weight. Enjoy paradise .. Dad

good news for American tourists - From: Arrival in Ubud/Local Transvestite Sighting
From Yahoo Travel - Remember the tightwad tourist whose baggy shorts, frequent complaining and shouted questions about why none of the locals spoke any English made the ugly American the world's Visitor From Hell? Well, it's time for Archie Bunker to move over and make way for Petulant Pierre. According to a recent international survey, the French are now considered the most obnoxious tourists from European nations, and behind only Indians and the last-place Chinese as the worst among all countries worldwide. And it's not only the rest of the world that have a gripe with the Gallic attitude: the French also finished second to last among nations ranking the popularity of their own tourists who vacation at home. But it's the unflattering image being reflected from abroad that may give pause to the millions of French travelers now heading off to summer vacation destinations across the globe. Will that move them to improve behavior the poll characterized as impolite, prone to loud carping and inattentive to local customs? If so, that's just the start: the study also describes the voyageur franĮais as often unwilling or unable to communicate in foreign languages, and particularly disinclined to spending money when they don't have to - including on those non compris tips. Over all, French travelers landed 19th out of 21 nations worldwide, far behind the first-place Japanese, considered most polite, quiet and tidy. Following the Japanese as most-liked tourists were the Germans, British and Canadians. Americans finished in 11th place alongside the Thais. Dad

or "He Saw/She Saw" that's it-that's the title of your travel book! just up the 'snark' factor a little eric and the gender bias and you'll be a best seller! not only that-if you pitch it before you go on your next trip, you can get a publisher to pay for the trip!!!! steph-do you have a job for next year? cuz a 3rd grade just opened up at my school. now it's gonna be a little tough to arrange an interview across the continents but if you are interested, I'll think of something . . . . . ta for now-alison

Ok....who captioned the photo of the Riverside Lunch? Was that YOU, Eric? Good thing Gia is asleep right now....she will not be pleased at your T/V descriptive word - "hideous"! You do recall her fondness (err...obsession?) with T/V's? Haahaa....will show this entry to her tomorrow and maybe we'll get some commentary there. Glad you guys got things sorted in a nicer place - good luck as you poke around and discover your new surroundings! xo, Suze

Ubud - From: Top end is overrated
Ubud is still very touristy and still loads of cockroaches, but there are nice restuarants and excellent cultural stuff. Itīs also very atmosperic as soon as you walk off the main street:rich green rice paddies and such. Do the hike up Mount Batur if itīs still possible - itīs awesome. Hoping you can see through the commercialism to the charm underneath. mike

Bali - From: Up up and away!!
The key phrase: go with the flow. Canīt believe you stayed in Kuta! Donīt worry, itīs uphill all the way from there. Black sand beaches all over Bali, but Lomboc has white sand beaches. Are you going to go to Komodo? Happy 4th and happy travels. mike

The weary travelers - From: Up up and away!!
Wow! What an ordeal from Boston to your first day in "paradise". This is an omen that things can only get better. Stephanie's writing is magnificent. I could almost smell the stench and feel the raging traffic reading her words. This will be a great virtual trip for those of us following this blog If this is any indication of future descriptive writings. Good luck and hope by now you have rested with views of a real beach and visions of paradise. The adventure has begun! Gabe

Ahhh....Bali.... - From: Up up and away!!
Hi Eric and Stephanie! First....let me tell you that I am decidedly envious - my long term "semi-secret": I have wanted to go to Bali since I first read about it when I was 8 years old! (it's only a semi-secret because most everyone who knows me, knows this factoid :) Anyway....so glad to hear that you are there, albeit with a rough start. Not to worry - that just means that everything is up from here on! Gia and I are so happy to be able to follow you along on your journey - always amused by Eric's colorful commentary! And Stephanie - it looks like yours will be just as colorful, so we're excited to hear more! Stay safe, stay healthy, have a ball and take lots of pictures!! xo, Suze and Gia
