Before Washington DC even came into the picture as the capital of the new world, Philadelphia held the bestowed torch for independence and revolutionary ideals of liberty as the United States capital for a decade. Still bearing remnants of its historic character which is evident even today, the city blends its intriguing squares and artefactual virtues with the modern markets and eclectic enterprise from its lowest street to the highest skyscraper. Philadelphia is affectionately nicknamed 'The City of Brotherly Love', siphoned beautifully by the hit film franchise, Rocky. Showing that, in this city above all others, a nobody can become a champion. We caught the Amtrak train to Philadelphia from Union Station, admiring the beautiful architecture of the Capitol and station before we stept onto the train and bid our final farewell to the Capital- Washington ... read more

Washington DC, 'a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm' said President Kennedy. The city chosen by George Washington to satisfy both Northern and Southern interests in its central location along the Potomac river. The modern day heart of democracy, encased in its vibrant weave of marble Romanesque and neoclassical architecture, modelled on Paris by city designer Pierre Charles L'Enfant. Given that we had been in a hot tube for eight hours we weren't at our sharpest for the Custom officers quick fire questions and accusatory gaze. Luckily for me no search was warranted, unlike at Gatwick, where the need was felt, amongst other things (still can't believe they did it). After security checks came a two ... read more

Stepping forward slowly in that scrum which barely resembled a queue at gate 37, south terminal of Gatwick airport, jostling with fellow travellers for supremacy in the race to get seen to first and thus get to their seat. My mind wandered back over how I came to be here. Having never been in this situation before my mind ploughed through the check list I memorised hours before. Passport? Check. Mobile phone? Check. Lonely Planet book covering the USA. Check. Laptop? Check check! I'm a first time traveller and this is the first time. But hold on a second. Did I call myself a traveller? But how brave am I really being? I won't be climbing up the face of Mount Everest or embarking on an expedition through the Amazon amongst the jungle and its deadly ... read more
