We're a couple of Aussies travelling Aussie, starting with bits of the north.
This trip was originally planned as a one week trip to Lawn Hill in North West Queensland.
It then became a 2 month then a 3 month trip to the Top End as well, leaving late March/early April.
This 3 month trip was going to be along the lines of: West from Townsville, possibly stopping in at Lawn Hill on our way to Darwin and the Top End. Or possibly stopping in at Lawn Hill on the way back, then across to the The Gulf (Normanton and Karumba) and Georgetown, over to the Atherton Tablelands, up to Cooktown, then back down the coast to Townsville.
We then hop0ed to work for a few months before heading off to do the Birdsville Track, Strezlecki and the Simpson Desert. Then back to the Townsville/North Qld region for more work, before heading to Tasmania in February next year to ride our motorbikes/scooters around there for about 4 weeks.
On our return to the Mainland we hoped to do a Gypsy Caravan holiday around the Gippsland area in Victoria.
Most of our plans changed on 11th February, 2011 when Noel came off the Postie bike, after Cyclane Yasi hit and caused widespread damage across the North, on 2nd/3rd February. He broke his right wrist and dislocated his left shoulder.
After the accident we decided to leave Bluewater Caravan Park as it was too far from town and they initially wanted Noel to drive to work (with his injuries). We moved to another of Jack's parks, Magnetic Gateway. We were lucky enough toget a big site and put both vans on the one site, while we slowly got ready to leave.
As the result of Noel's injuries, our departure date was setback somewhat. After lots of hoo-haa and crap from Australia Post, they finally approved both injuries as Workers Compensation. Mind you, he had to go and see one of their consultants before they would approve both injuries. As we had heard bad things about their consultant Noel saw his own Ortho-pod first, which proved to be the right thing to do.
Once all compo was approved, Noel handed in his resignation and left Australia Post on 3.6.11.
It took us a week to pack everything and get ready to leave. So now we're planning to leave on 11.6.11 and have 4 weeks to get to Darwin as I promised Lindsay we would be there a week before her 21st birthday.
Our plans are now to be away from Townsville for 3 months as Noel has a surgicat appointment with his Ortho-pod, John Maguire on 9.9.11. At this stage we intend changing this to a date at least a few weeks later. Although these plans may change again.
June 12th 2011
Had breakfast after waking up around 7. We took our time, spoke to a few people there and left Bilyana around 9.30am. Stopped in at Tully Tourist Information Centre. A very helpful lady there, with lots of knowledge about the area, recommended stopping in at Murdering Point Winery on our way to Kurramine Beach. She also said we should see Tully's Boot. We found the boot in a park and it was over 8 metres high. This is Tully's highest recorded rain level. Unreal!! We drove around Tully and it was interesting to see the damage and repairs done since Yasi. Some fibro places were still standing despite the cyclone and yet some brick houses were almost demolished. It was interesting to see the way the leaves are growing back on the trees with minimum branches. ... read more
