31.01.2012 Happy feast! That was the theme of this day. I woke up rather late and then hurried for the breakfast. On the table I found unexpected surprise; as it was the feast day I had on my plate couple of sweets, crisps (salt and vinegar), picture of Don Bosco and handkerchief. After finishing breakfast, we cleaned up and I decided that I will stay with them to help. So up to 4pm I was in the convent! And what is the better way to celebrate theDon Bosco feast than by working hard. Until lunch time, the girls cooked for employees of the Laura centre and I washed the dishes. At 2pm we had buffet style lunch with the people working here and after eating there was loads and loads of dancing. It was ... read more

Dearfriends, This is longer version of my email that I sent you previously. I took my laptop this time ans therefore I will be sending more comprehensive emailsJ Zambia, 25.january 2012 So I found my way to the community of Salesians sisters here in northern Zambian town, Kasama. I will week by week introduce this community to you, my friends, through my eyes, which are of course influenced by my previous experiences in Asia. However,I promise to be as impartial as possibleJ The journey to Lusaka wasn’t the easiest one I’ve made. It took me whole 2 days from London. After a couple of hours in Dubai, and then many hours on the plane with 2 hours delay, I finally arrived in Johannesburg in South Africa. Here I watched beautiful storm passed by and amazing ... read more

Nettur Experience. It was three months ago when I first arrived to the community of Dalits in Nettur (term Dalits is used for the previously known untouchables). Now it is the highest time not to talk about my feelings and exciting experience any longer, but about the traditions, culture and foremost about the people of this country. Overall, this place deserves couple pages on its own. I would like to add that following lines are heavily influenced by numerous conversations with the Salesians working here, as well as teachers, children at school and in the centre and also by daily articles in local newspapers. The placement is located in the Bosco Boys’ Home in the Nettur village, situated in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The state is fast developing economically with the many resources ... read more

June 3rd 2011

Another email from the 3rd of june: Firstly, I would like to apologise for not being in touch for some time. It has been a bit busier here in Nettur during the last weeks. There were many evening programmes (more dancing, singing and drama) in the villages which we attended and enjoyed them very much. In the mornings kids have been coming here to the house to take English lessons and to play. In the afternoons I took some time to prepare lessons for the next day. There was also plenty of time to relax; we took a 2-day trip with Fr Felix and went to the tip of India, Kanyakumari. On the way we visited coastal Hindu temples, Catholic churches and one of the nicest places I have seen so far- a fishermen village near ... read more

May 21st 2011

It is very hot these days, May is supposed to be the hottest month in Tamil Nadu and if there were no winds we all would be struggling greatly (I am happy to have a fan in the room :) I can say couple of words in Tamil now and kids are also very happy each time I do that, they are trying to teach me all the time which is always a good fun :)) May is summer holidays now and always couple of kids from nearby village come to have an English lesson and games-good practice for us, as kids are usually beginners and it is difficult to explain more complicated things such as grammar, so we are teaching vocabulary for start... Last Wednesday, the director of the development office came to visit us ... read more

First week passed surprisingly quickly, I have learnt how to eat with hands and I don’t get shocked when there is rice and curry for breakfast any moreJ temperatures outside are high 45 degrees, but it is windy so heat doesn’t affect us so badly, thanks God. There have been many things happening, we attended 2 weddings already, one in the bigger town followed by great feast of Indian dishes, one in nearby village, both were so different from what we used to in Europe. I especially enjoy seeing women dressed in saris, traditional dresses that are so beautiful (I will have to get one before I leave this country). We also had 40 kids from villages here in the centre staying for the weekend, they had a training about the parliament and how it works ... read more

May 2nd 2011

First email from India: "Hello everyone, just want to share couple of first impressions of my stay in this interestingly beautiful country: After a long flight and 5 hour drive from airport in Chennai we arrived in Tiruchy, where development office is based. Lydia (the girl who is staying with me for one month here) and I stayed in this city for 1 day, eating traditional Indian food and even went for sightseeing... we experienced a ride in auto rickshaw and proper Indian traffic, chaotic yet it works! :) The climate was hot and humid there, even with ceiling fan, it was difficult to sleep. The next day, we drove another 5 hours to Nettur, our final destination. it is a bit cooler and fresher than in the city and noise is non-existent (just noisy turkeys and ... read more
