How kind of the birds to pose
The following was a 3 day tour of the Pampas (an area in the Amazon jungle of Bolivia) on a long boat searching for animals. I spent the majority of my 3 days laughing at other people who spent their whole time trying to get the perfect picture of the animals, especially the dolphins. Those of you who have ever been dolphin watching will know that they are the hardest thing to take a picture of as timing is everything and you haven’t got a clue where they will come from. At the beginning of the tour I decided that [View Full Entry]

View from our balcony on the left you can see the death road that we just rode on.
This is basically the town where the death road finishes.......A well deserved swim in the pool and sweat it out in the sauna with the view attached all for US$9 a night. God we get ripped off in Britain [View Full Entry]

The day I rode 64km down the death road and survived. Yes I have typed correctly and yes it is called the death road for a reason. Just out of La Paz the death road has on average 280 deaths per year and has been officially named “The world’s most dangerous road”. After having ridden down it on a bike (At least my life is in my own hands) I can not believe that it even called a road because in my eyes it is a track! A very wet, slippy, rocky and narrow track. There are certain parts of [View Full Entry]

La Paz
La Paz
A traditionally dressed Bolivian
So I spent a few days in La Paz but really there wasn’t anything interesting to report so I thought that I would take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about the Bolivians and some of the things that I have noted in the memory bank. 1) All Bolivians especially the women are 4 foot nothing! There has been times when I have been queuing and have literally been head, shoulders and hips above those around me. (It’s times like this that I hate being a lone traveller because it would make a fantastic Kodak moment). 2) You [View Full Entry]

Me enjoying a bite of dynamite for lunch
Where do I start with Potosi? At 4100m above sea level it is officially the highest city in the world and the only reason that it is habituated I’m sure is because of the Cerro Rico (Rich Mountain) which is the richest source of silver in the world. Potosi is a mining city and family’s generation after generation will become miners. It is definitely one of the strangest places that I have been but also the mining tour was not what I could say enjoyable in the slightest. In the seventeenth century it was far bigger than Madrid and due to [View Full Entry]

Some random little town where we broke down on the journey to Sucre
Sucre is just another city really in which I settled for a few days without anything too interesting to report. Sucre however standing at 2904 metres above sea level is the highest capital city in the World but some books may contradict this statement and say that La Paz is the capital. After independence Sucre was apparently made the capital. (Yes I wish they would make up their mind as well) The journey to Sucre from Uyoni was 11 hours with 8 hours being along what has to be the worst road ever. (So I thought until I saw the death [View Full Entry]

Yet another breakdown.....this is quite a common site now in Bolivia
Check spelling........ The funniest thing of the whole tour happened today. So you would probably guess that as the tour is taken by Jeep that there is some quite rough terrain. Well on our way from camp down quite a steap hill we saw a combi stuck, in fact they looked like they had been there a while. On closer examination it was 2 Germans in what must have been their 60´s, I decided to interrogate to find out that they had shipped their combi over to south America but didn´t realise how bad the roads were in bolivia and now [View Full Entry]

Me trying to balance on a mountain of salt
This has to be Bolivia’s most extraordinary attractions; at 9000 square kilometres the Salar de Uyoni is by far the biggest salt lake in the world. When you are there you can see snow capped mountains in the distance and you really believe that you are in another world I saw the salt lake by a 3 day jeep tour. As with most things how much you enjoy the tour is very dependant on who you are with, thankfully I had a good group. You will tell by the action photo’s that I spent most of my time with a couple [View Full Entry]

The Sun Dance kid

 South America
At 2950m above sea level Tupiza is ringed by the rugged Cordillera de Chicas. Surrounded by amazing landscape of rainbow coloured rocks, hills, mountains and canyons, deep gorges and is reminiscent of the American Wild West. Hence, please don’t fall of your SEAT at the site of me on a horse. This is actually part of the area where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid was filmed and therefore it would have been rude for me to have not ventured on a horse riding tour. Most of the actual movie was filmed approx 6 hours from here and as I had [View Full Entry]
