After a week seriously battering my liver I was sick as a dog today. Not because of the alcohol consumed but because of the traditional Bahian food I had eaten which was sold by women in traditional dress. All week we saw these women on street corners braiding hair and sewing what looked like a terry towelling turban onto people’s heads. What was going on? What does this have to do with carnaval? The answer is: Sons of Gandhi is the most famous afoxe. The nearly 5,000 member all-male bloco is always a source of great anticipation. After one of the heaviest night yet of our trip we all decided that to survive this carnaval we would have to pace ourselves a little better. There are 3 main routes, Barra (the beach circuit), The Campo Grande Circuit and then the Pelourino circuit (Samba). The Pelourino circuit was right on our door step and thankfully was the tamest of the three, this was generally safe enough to walk around with cameras and money in your pocket due to the heavy police presence, this is where the families spent there time. Before I tell you about each day I will explain how carnaval works. There were lots of different options to participate in so my aim was to experience every part of carnaval, having 6 days our plans worked perfect. Carnaval happens in several cities throughout Rio and South America but the reason I chose Salvador over Rio for carnaval is because here you participate but in Rio you sit back and watch (who wants to watch other people partying when you can be part of it? Did you know that the Amazon is over 6 million sq. kilometres and is larger than the whole of Europe.
