Dubai Mall

I recognise that photo...
Wait a minute! We have an identical photo in our blog! It is one of those places where when you see the photo op you can't get it wrong. Nice to read your blog. It made me remember how it was in Dubai. Bringing back some great memories. /Ake

Dubai Mall

Identical...
It is a popular photo in a popular mall, for sure! I never would have thought I would be taking photos inside a mall but the Dubai Mall is such a tourist attraction that I guess it deserves at least one. Thanks so much for reading and commenting, Ake!

Downtown Dubai

Downtown Dubai
What a great addition to our 'Follow that Road' thread in the Photography Forum...one of your best

I'm pretty sure Dubai will be nothing more than a layover for me, as the extravagance and opulence is a sheer turn off, but I can appreciate some of the things you did and saw, closer to my budget level. Maybe, just maybe thanks to your blog, I'll give it a go.

Frugal budget
Your philosophy of living for experiences instead of souvenirs is what we prefer. We only buy refrigerator magnets most of the time. Which has caused lots of questions when we come back into the country as they think we should have spent more since we were gone for a while. Your transportation sounds like it was worth it for the month. We have friends who have told us how expensive that part of the world is. They complained about the price of a glass of wine and they generally don't complain about cost. It sounds like you had a wonderful time even though you experienced a bit of poverty. We will get there some day. Guess we'd better save up for that trip.

Frugal...
We came back from 22 months in Europe and didn't declare anything. The customs people really did not believe us either. We do send postcards to people (are we old?) and of course, take pictures. Oslo was expensive for us but mostly because of our budget now. I would like to take a longer trip in the area sometime when we can be a little freer with money. It really is one of the nicest places we have been. The transit pass was the best thing ever. We literally rode every route in the city. I don't think we have covered any city in Europe more. Thanks for reading and commenting. We are enjoying your Africa adventures!

Oslo Autumn

Glad you enjoyed our little corner in the world
We live in Stockholm so Oslo is not far away. When it comes to travelling in Sweden and Norway it helps to know what is expensive and what isn't. It seems like you learned that the hard way. Since we live here we know the prices already and we don't even notice that some things are expensive. Nice to read a story written by an outsider what it is like to travel here./Ake

Oslo Autumn

Enjoyed...
Indeed we did enjoy Oslo very much. Really a beautiful city and we wish we could see some of the northern parts of the country. Hopefully, we will be back soon. It was expensive but mostly because we watch our money so close. They had lots of discounts for tourists to get into museums and for transit, but they were geared towards short-term visits. Still a great time. Thanks so much for reading and commenting, Ake. We appreciate it!

Just when I thought about visiting Scandinavia
The most expensive places I've been to are Paris and Belgium, but Norway sounds way more expensive. It will have to wait until I'm close to retirement and have saved enough. At least I've sort of experienced the place by reading your blog

Expensive...
You do have to watch your money in the Scandinavian countries. But I also think you do get to experience a really nice place so it may be money well spent. It might be worth skipping a few Starbucks during the year to see an exceptionally beautiful part of the world. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Aye...
... it's really expensive here in the cold north.

Expenses...
Some places are very inexpensive but aren't really that good. Other places, like Norway are a little expensive but worth every penny. We thought Oslo was one of our favorite cities we have visited. Thank you for reading and commenting!

Acropolis

Athens isn't loved by me either
I am actually happy to read that you haven't fallen in love with Athens. Now I know that it isn't only me. Athens should really be a place I ought to love but I don't. I don't dislike her, I can't put a finger on anything that is wrong, but there simply isn't that magical connection that I would expect. /Ake

No Love...
Athens won't be remembered as our favorite place, however, we did meet some very nice people. They are having a very difficult financial time and I hope they can recover. I would like to go back and visit the islands someday, perhaps. Thanks for reading and commenting, Ake!

2004
We have not been to Greece since 2004 but loved our time there. Yes, I suspect you are not emotionally prepared to fall in love again. Although the crowds would have been too much. The country economy has changed a great deal since we were there and probably has had an impact on the personality of the city.

2004...
I always hate to say I don't like a place. Even though we spent a month in Athens, it is still not enough to really make a fair opinion. The country has really had financial problems and it shows in the care of monuments, parks and streets. The people we interacted with were great. Even with the difficulties, they have high spirits and great pride. I did not like the crowds or the heat. Neither had anything to do with Greece. I visited in 1980 and wasn't much of a fan then, either. I haven't been out to the islands for an extended visit and would love to get a chance someday. Thanks for writing. Looking forward to your Africa trip. Maybe we'll run into each other!

I'm not in love
I fully understand your lament; I felt the same way about Morocco. Most travelers I know love Morocco, and gush about Fes and Marrakesh. Me - not so much. I know that being there in the heat of summer and during Ramadan dampened my enthusiasm. Maybe someday I'll go back in a better frame of mind. At least you had some beautiful scenery. Your pictures are stunning, as always.

Not in love...
Marrakech and Fes were a little tough on us too. The heat can wear you out for sure. It definitely got to us in Athens. Next time we will go to the islands instead and probably pick a different season. Thanks for reading and the nice compliments, Karen!

Merveilleux Writing and Photography
Although I don't share all your sentiments about Paris, your writing style and photography almost changed my mind! I long for the day when my husband and I have more than just a few days in a place we already know and love, or in a new found place that we have just fallen in love with. Loved all your photos!

Paris...
We really do like Paris, but I do have to admit I sometimes see why others may not. We are lucky to have time to look a little deeper into a destination. It often helps us to appreciate it. Thanks for the nice compliments and welcome to Travelblog!
