quick update! So this week started off quiet - shopping in Thamel, dinners in nice restaurants, playing truth or dare jenga with the family (SO funny! clothes swapping was involved.....). Until Wednesday when we decided to break the monotony and do this http://www.bungynepal.com/ (my family only found out via facebook after, errr sorry) oh my fucking god, unbelievably terrifying!! I have the DVD of me jumping to show anyone that is interested Then Yesterday we went to Everest..... on a mountain flight actually. So cool, we got to fly right over the top of the mountain and saw the Annapurnas, Makalu, etc. Surreal Then we ventured into Thamel and got involved in, wait for it, CYCLE RICKSHAW RACING!!! So much fun. I'll upload my somewhat chaotic video when I get home. My rickshaw dude won :) ... read more
Namaste Got back yesterday from an AWESOME weekend in Chitwan national park This post is really nothing without loadsa pictures but a quick summary of what we got up to: *Riding elephants for a safari - we saw peacocks, rhinos, deer, camels *Washing elephants in the river!!! No doubt one of the coolest things I have EVER done. Sitting on an elephants back and having it squirt water at you from it's trunk then jumping off, so much fun. Had a bit of chat with the keeper of mine and turns out it was a girl elephant called Chanchal. Was probably also one of the biggest ones there *Riding on the bus roof back to the resort *Watching a tharu cultural dance show which involved someone dressing up as a peacock, dancing with fire sticks, and ... read more
Yesterday we went shopping at the Kathmandu mall. Fairly disappointing! Stuff hee is quite cheap, but there is not much decent stuff. I guess I had high hopes since we are next to China we'd get some alright knock off designer bags and shoes but uh uh. thes best things to buy seem to be fags, DVDs and converse (two pairs so far, a mere fiver each!!) Also, there was a power cut whilst we were in the centre. Shopping in the dark is NOT easy...... After this Bidhan (medical officer from Kanti) and I went to Patan where he acquired a motorike and we went round the valley. You can still get stunning views even near Kathmandu which is nice when you wanna escape the polluted, noisy city. My hair was seriously messed up by ... read more
so a (long winded) update of what we got up to in Pokhara Firstly, it was SO nice to get away from the dirty, hectic, bustle of Kathmandu and escape to the country. Pokhara is so peaceful and beautiful. Surely one of the most scenic places in the world, definitely the most scenic I've been too on my limited travels! Friday was spent exlporing before enoying grilled fish from the lake, mmmm On Saturday we checked into a different hotel (a verrry nice one indeed) and our ahem, friend from the hospital (one of the junior doctors who is very friendly...) made the 10 hour or so ride over on his motorbike to join us Him and two of his friends drove us to one of the other lakes in Pokhara - Begnas Tal. There were ... read more
Got up at 5am this morning to jump on the bus to Pokhara - 7 hours later we're here! I's SO beautiful here. lots of nice scenery, restraunts, etc Very warm, properly like we're on holiday. Hopefully gonna check into a plush hotel with a pool tomorrow - whoop! http://www.barahi.com/ plans: boating on the lake climbing the hill to the world peace pagoda watching the sunrise from Sarangkot watching a cultural Nepali dance show at the hotel sunbathing, swimming, eating lots of fish, pedicures, massages and chilling!! We're here (with fast internet) until monday morning so will no doubt write soon x ... read more
Namaste!! Internet is gash here so cant upload photos or readliy add to the blog so here is a quick update of what we've been up to: *Started at Kanti - got a big talk on the history of the hospital which was sad but quite insightful. the only thing we can really do is be iformed of the situation (knowledge is power yada yada...) ad throwing money at the problem wont really create a big impact. the only way of understanding is to see it so so far I'm REALLY glad to have made the decision to come here. The language barrier creates a bit of difficulty but I'm doing ok understanding about 40% of spoken Nepali. We saw a lumbar puncture being done without any anaesthetic which was grim, but you can only think ... read more
Day one Wandered into Thamel - roads here are perilous. Car horns beeping, no pavements or traffic lights, dirt, bad times! People are really friendly and able to show the way. Think they also take novelty in the fact we look quite different - jackie and I are also soewhat of a tourist attraction! We befriended a cycle rickshaw dude (Lhafsan) who took us to the Monkey temple or swayambhunath ('swam-bhoo') We were convinced we were gonna die on that ride, very bumpy! We reqached ultrasonic frequencies aawwing at the monkeys around the temple, they were SO close!!! The temple itself was stunning. After sweating about half our body fluid, we got to the top and had to buy a ticket. Mine was discounted because 'I'm Pakistani' which is part of the SAARC country alliacne thing ... read more
Phew so that's us here. Journey wasn't actually too horrendous despite lasting a good 27 hours in and going on hardly any sleep! Touching down in Nepal was amazing. Sounds so cheesy but I've never seen such beautiful scenery. Lots of hills, mountains and greens. Caught a glimpse of tyhe Himalays from the plane too :). The taxi ride over to bishop's was an adventure - this ramshackle little van thing, with no seatbelts. Kathmandu is the busiest, liveliest place I've ever seen, quite overwhlemed. Apparently I look very Nepali......hmmm. Our bedroom is wonderfully tee and floral, and I was re acquainted with Nepali/Asian tea - OMG I want to bathe in the stuff! Anyway, this internet connection is pretty shit so just thought I'd drop a quick entry to say we're here, and loving it ... read more
