I'm sorry you ate pig tails and nuts. That sounds seriously awful. Also, I intend to steal the phrase "pregnant nothingness."

Hi MVA! I'm glad you've had some strange, but nice Chinese holiday. I loved reading about your trip to hong kong. It's cool to hear about the same places I saw when I was there I guess about 2 years ago or so. I especially enjoyed the escalator and the ability to find cadbury chocolate! Went into the uhh "chun ching mansion" ( I think that was the name) it sounded like the hostel you stayed at, sketchy as hell! My dads going to Macau for definitely this summer, probably june/July. You won't be in china then, will you? I don't have a huge desire to go back, but I totally would if we could meet up. Oh yeah, I hope you intend on eating a ton of pho while you're in Vietnam. I am so jealous of your travels! Take care!

Chinese ppl do have different words for girls and boys; girls/she=y boys/he=Ö But yes, they have the same pronunciation.

Donkey Friends - From: Tulous, train travel, and the tackiness of tourism
We tried to stay at a hostel up near Zhangjiajia and the online description was hysterical-- I posted the entire paragraph in the "Donkey Friends" entry. The hostel's website said something like "the bar is momentarily open for the donkey friend." Then they said something like the rooms are elegant for the back people that want to bring in the prostitute. Your guess is as good as mine in terms of their actual meaning, but I thought it was a good story. Thanks for your interest!

Manners - From: The Sound and the Fury (Signifying Nothing)...of China
I don't know if it was a news item about getting ready for the Olympics or something to do with the increase of Chinese tourism abroad or whatever or even wherever I saw it but it was precisely about what you noted, that for an extremely polite and friendly culture, there were some things like spitting that wouldn't translate!

haha your toasting story killed me. my dad always told me stories about the ridiculous amounts of drinking you do there and how much pressure there is to keep up. that liquor you're drinking sounds like maotai, which might be the most vile thing ever. my dad brought a bottle back and i was never brave enough to even try it. i can't wait, you're going to have so many good conversations with my dad and brother...if you ever actually meet them. how long are you staying for?

Sounds like you're having a tremendous time. Cheap beer and massages....sounds nice. Also, please make sure there is at least one descriptive juxtaposition per blog post. Audiences love juxtapositioning.

Shenzhen - From: I made it!
Shenzhen is actually one of the most westernized cities in China, after HK, BJ and SH. It also has a huge expat community there.
