Seeing the lights of England growing larger in the darkness sparked off an odd set of emotions.Happy to be getting back to the Mothership, journeys end, but sad that this epic trip, this rustic lifestyle was entering its final chapter. It was cold, not Spanish cold , but English cold.Snow has fallen over night , dusting the hills around Plymouth in an Arctic blanket. Cycling from the boat onto English soil, we were finally back, back on the left for the first time since Thailand some 14 000 km ago , waving to my family on the departure lounge deck, the very place they had waved goodbye from in August 2008, twenty eight months ago, suddenly it didn't feel so long since we were here.Weve only had seven days off since seeing our families last in Croatia, ... read more

Crossed the border into Pais Vasco at Behobie, a relative short up and down along the coast which marked our 3rd entry into Spain on the trip.Suddenly there was a feeling the circle was closing fast,in a few days we will be back in Santander where, twenty eight months ago we pedalled off the boat and wheezed our way slowly into the Pico's de Europa with barely 300km on the clock.Thirty three thousand kilometres later on busy roads we stayed sharp and focused as we cycled with the rest of Spain into Donostia. Armed with a tourist brochure of the old town pensions and guesthouses we searched high and low for accommodation, but for these cycling pilgrims there would be no room at the inn. Each land lady had a different excuse, two nights minimum,no bike ... read more

Bedarieux was just what we needed in terms of rest.Phillip and Madleine were the perfect hosts and keen to hear of our trip so far.We even took in Armistice day, local style watching Nicoli, their son play Le Marseillaise.A brave choice for him and parents alike as he's only been playing for about two weeks. Refreshed we cycled on passing Mons la Trivalle, a place I had worked with friends eighteen years ago, try as I might I couldn't quite remember the place although the bar did look vaguely familiar.Dropping down out of the mountains we joined canal du midi which runs from Sete til Toulouse, some 240km.Lined with autumnal Plane trees with leaves a foot deep on the tow path it was beautiful but it was slow.Thoughts of flat , quiet paths were pleasing ... read more

Having just clocked up the magic 20 000 miles in the pouring rain minutes before the border, we entered France cold and wet. From here its a straight run across the south and into Northern Spain where we complete the circle at Santander.Easy! Well, not in this rain.We grinded on into Monaco, country number 35 and the last new one of the trip.Didn“t have the will to do much as the rain was relentless and I felt that our current appearance would be unacceptable down at the Monte Carlo Casino. "But these shoes are all I have "" ""Its not the shoes sir,its the plastic bags covering them"" We headed out through a set of tunnels, careful not to be run over by David Coulthard and his massive chin.Zig zagging our way in the failing light ... read more

After seven days of camping, usually in the wet we were very happy to see Francesca and enjoy a few days in her roof top flat right in the centre of Bologna's old town. What a place too.Its a university town, has over 30km of archways ,several old towers and enough churches and old building to rival any European capital.Italy's really growing on us as a country and with a hostess as easy going as Francesca we had a great crack wandering about the place.Mind you we did spend quite a lot of time back at the flat indulging in a bit of rare 'indoors'. Lovely day to stay in,isn't it? Too bloody right, no doubt it'll piss down the day we leave...... Francesca's boyfriend,Tati's cousin and my mate Frederik turned up from Copenhagen to see ... read more

Stepped off the ferry at Ancona port under grey heavy skies and into a light rain that became stronger as the morning went on.Hoping that the clouds would pass we used our time to search the net for year round campsites and a book shop for a map of southern Europe. The rain was still coming down as we left town along a busy waterlogged road, heading north in our crap rain gear which consisted of a wind proof jacket a chinese cape and plastic bags over our shoes.Luckily for us Italy has plenty of LIDL supermarkerts. In here we loaded up on useful clothes like rain trousers and Tati got herself a fetching pair of green rubber shoes.Thats handy,if the nursing doesn't work out back home she can get a job as a garden ... read more

To begin with we got the feeling that Montenegro was a top cycling destination, narrow lanes from the border with only the odd car or two for company were ideal for a lazy afternoon ride. Then we got to the main road.Maybe were a bit tired of having trucks up the arse , but out on the coast road its a reality, beautiful enough but risky.Blind corners, fast traffic, climbs and more twists than a Hitchcock movie had me looking more in my rear mirror than watching out front. We took a break at Stari Bar , an old abandoned city overlooking the resort of Bar.With a name like that I was'nt surprised to meet a load of Brits wandering the place, I guess from now on we will meet many a tourist as we press on into ... read more

Albania's a place ive always fancied visiting, it was one of those difficult political countries lying like a black mark on Europe's white wall, heading backwards while everyone else went forwards, but that was then. Now we're here, stood on top of one of the thousands of left over bunkers built in Enver Hoxha's time looking out over Lake Ohrid below and wondering what Europe's second poorest country had on offer for the likes of us. Lots of mountains for a start and from our vantage point above the lake at 1000 m, a good down hill. This area will be covered in snow in about a months time according to the owner who's cafe over looked a view of a passing storm in the valley below.Autumn is in the air today, after a cracking down hill past ... read more

You know youve been on the road a long time when the stray dogs start following you around, looking at you with pity in their eyes. We're a bit frayed round our material edges now,Tati's sandles are more glue than fabric, my shorts are more patchwork than Elizabeth Taylor's face and the less said about our underwear the better, but its all good round the world character. Some of the cyclists we see now are a fresh faced, clean panniered lot straight out of the autumn 2010 bike catalogue, where as weve taken on the more sylish cardboard box, hobo look, which by the way takes a lot of fine tuning.I just wish the local dogs would stop offering blankets and a kennel for the night. Our own kennel was renamed some time ago the ''favela'' for its run ... read more

Apart from the Mel Gibson movie Gallipoli ,I didn't really know a lot about this peninsula's war time history , so I decided to use our day off to inform myself. Having opted away from the pricey 45L price tag for the day tour I ventured out on my bike to take in Anzac cove and the various monuments and cemeteries leaving Tati to use the day off more wisely back at the hotel, feeling that a combination of war, hills, war and cycling weren't worth the 40 odd km and were definitely very un day off. Girls! It was a good day and totally reinforced the claim that during World War one , a soldiers life was pretty much worthless and if you were a front line soldier then you were pretty much fucked. Most of the ... read more
